Frank Sinatra's mob connections kept him in wholesale cigarets. While my Dad was paying 40¢ for a pack of Raleighs, Frank was getting them for 23¢: a savings of 17¢.
@DaysOfBrokenArrows I think you are correct, what a scream. I showed my co-workers and we are divided on this, but I think you hit the nail on the head. Only he could get away with this!!!!! Love it!
We all loved the 5th Dimension. They recorded Jimmy Webb's Up Up & Away right here in Las Vegas and also, they opened for FS at his very first Caesars Palace gig!
As for the song, well, it may look corny now but Back then, Frank was the HOST, they were his GUESTS and it was common to perform together. FS knew a thing or two about gropu singsing; he helped invent it. Let's all rememner Billboard's very first #1 song, 'I'll Never Smile Again,' back in 1940, was a group thing.
@1915fas....I think FS looked great and sounded great. I also believe he was somewhat modern. Something most of the singers of his genre were afraid to do. He should have sang more in this particular song. He seemed to be just starting to get into it all. God Bless you Francis Albert. There will never be another you.
This may have been the same show where he put on a Nehru jacket, very popular and kitsch at the time. But make no mistake about it, this is not the real Frank. He had impeccable taste in clothes and accessories. But he was not above trying to be contemporary and attracting younger fans.
@defundthewar I think your right about the Nehru jacket. Years ago, somebody at Esquire Magazine did a gag article about never released Sinatra albums including a Bhagavad Gita Sinatra cover with the jacket. According to legend, when a musician burst out laughing at Frank in the suit, he lost his cool and walked out on the session.
@1915fas I don't believe it, and I advise you not to, either, because it makes no sense. Frank's occasional lapses into poor taste had a reason-- to be more "now," not wind up a basically nostalgic figure, like Bing Crosby. Frank was single-minded about his career; that came first. But there is no logical reason why he would wear something outlandish at a recording session, just to be seen by staff and musicians.

Frank loved the 5th D. They were his favorite of the "mod" singers and groups. This is from one of his TV specials here they were his guests.
