After you answer on, either delete it or refresh the page and you will be able to open the next one.(The yellow highlight disappears and it turns white.)

Just like the comment section on the video page, click page two and then go back to one, most of the time it puts them back in order. It doesn't work on the all comment pages though.

Hi Zip, one solution would be to delete all your friends except a few of the people you talk to regularly, and then set your pm's so only friends can send you pm's. Friends aren't very useful anyway, except for sending vids to people and for other people to send vids to you. And you probably have way more than you can handle anyway. So going forward, this may be a good way to cut the flow of incoming pm's down to the most important.
