This silent film, like almost all of the ones we see today, is most likely presented at the wrong speed. I'm not blaming anyone who posts these old films. Silent films were, ostensibly, recorded at 16 frames per second, while modern sound films were (and >are<) recorded at 24 fps. That's why silent movies look so frantic and unnatural. Except, "some scenes were intentionally undercranked during shooting to accelerate the action—particularly for comedies and action films." (Wikipedia).

Love to see these early Keaton shorts. We all owe Arbuckle a big debt of gratitude for helping Buster out in the beginning and getting him started.
Also, it's cool to see how these early comedians borrowed each others gags. Fatty's ticket joke at 3:20 makes an appearance in Buster Keaton's "The Cameraman" years later.
This stuff is a hoot. Nearly a century later and they still have only produced a handful of films that are as funny and clever as this. Fatty > John Belushi
Thank God they're rebuilding Luna Park! They really let the park go to crap, glad to see theyre keeping the Wonder Wheel, Cyclone and the parachute jump tho, keep some of that old timey feel to it loll
luna park is being "rebuilt" thank god for those who still cherish history unlike the hated Joe Sitt, i seriously cannot wait for summer 2010 which means the rebirth of everything good and pure in my most cherished childhood memory neighborhood, coney island
These Guys Really Took A Beating When They Made These Films, They Risked Their Lives Making Some Of These Pictures. Just About All Comedy Actors Today Are Pussies Compared To These Actors, All Except Chris Farley Who Was Gonna Play Fatty If Only He Lived. He Would've Been In The New Sandler/ Rock Movie. Kevin James Is O.k But He Doesn't Hold A Candle To Farley. RIP Chris, The World Isn't Funny Anymore With You Gone
Whenever I watch these types of movies (extremely rare occasion), I always think "every living thing that was in this film is now dead. The dust from their bones is probably long gone."
I like this Fatty character though, mostly because of what he went through in his career. He was the Chris Farley/John Candy/John Belushi of his time, and the whole murder scandal (he didn't do it) just adds to my interest.
ROFL at the rides they had back then. Total death traps, but must've been very fun.
no they accused him of murder, what really happened is he kicked her in the stomach when she was tickling him, but she had a diseased bladder, and so it killer her, but he was tried for murder and rape
thats not even close to what happened. She had an infection from an illegal abortion, and was still recovering when she was forced to go to the party by her female pimp. Arbuckle literally had nothing to do with her death, he didn't lay a hand on her.
Messed up what happened to Fatty. He was ruined by a lying wench and an unscrupulous DA. This was one of his best shorts, though. It's not in this clip, but later on in this film, Buster becomes a life guard and does a mean standing backflip. He was athletic as hell.
Great to see Buster Keaton in this, that would have been awesome to see Chris Farley as Roscoe, the Hollywood execs should pursue this idea with an actor like Jack Black.
For a wonderful book on Coney Island, read Joseph Heller's autobiography, "Now and Then". Heller, (the author of Catch-22) grew up in Coney Island, and he writes a beautiful book on what it was like to live there in the twenties , thirties and forties. You'll feel like you were there, back in the day.
They just gradually got replaced by "bigger-and-better" rides. Can you imagine some of these today, though? In our sue-crazy society, amusement parks would go bankrupt!
Blame Thor Equities and Joe Sitt for what you saw in Coney, Please don't let first impressions scare you from Coney. Give Coney time She'll come around again. Unless Joe Sitt builds a Mall. Come down and Join me in Coney Friday Night, watch the fireworks and feel that old time Magic.
@dutchmazz Love Coney so much, been many times to NY in summer, each time I go there I can smell the magic of the past, imagine a new future for Coney. Something is moving positive, is it ?
Remember that time at Coney Island? It was 1904 and you weren't wearing any shorts, and you peed on the gypsy woman while she took a break from reading palms, and we smoked Dutch Halman cigarettes by the penny machines........good times.
When will i marry and have a happy home? "aint no such animal". LOL. thank you so much for posting this, there's something so sad and wonderful about footage pre-1935.
Aha! I read 'Tempest In A Flat Hat' so I am aware of him, just never seen a picture of him. I should have put two and two together, really! Thanks for the info.

Just because it wasn't proven doesn't mean he didn't do it, of course it doesn't mean he did. OJ was found not guilty but you know he did it.
