Both my parents are jazz musicians, they introduced me to Al when I was about 6, from the first time I heard Spain I was astonished. He has been my hero for the last 11 years, I don't care that no one else my age listens to this music (real music). Al Jarreau is amazing and I'm so glad to be influenced by him.
Love Al Jarreau &, even more, John Coltrane. Here, Jarreau sings original lyrics, but accompaniment is clearly rooted in way(s) that Coltrane played it (& a bit in Miles' "Kind of Blue"). Trane's recorded versions start w/ LP (now CD) "My Favorite Things" from 1960. That LP, along w/ "Kind of Blue," awoke in me, at 19, a love for jazz almost as great as my love for classical since age 2. Trane recorded "Favorite Things" many times; many are great. Now I got to get this Jarreau CD--if I can!
One of the better version. I like the original! But, I differently love Al's version! ahahahah, I tried to sing it! ahahah, He's the best! Had fun trying to keep up with him though!
I used to have this album, and it's wonderful to find much of it on YouTube. I like most of Jarreau's stuff before he went largely pop, but don't think he's ever truly topped his work on "Al Jarreau 1965 --" his backup combo here is terrific as well --
The best version of this song - ever!
Classic Al Jarreau, No1

My Favorite Things is the name of the album
billcottles 1 year ago
@FTWWHM I got that title, from a compilation of 1965 and Ain't No Sunshine, so I think "1965" is the actual album this was released on.
