this is about saving your butt by listening to those who are charged with military missions. You do what the drill sargeant says to see if you can follow orders that will come to you in the heat of battle. If you don understand that dont join the military it is not a political battlefield it is one where saving your butt and making the other guy die for his flag!!!!!

It was written that way so as to prevent government from establishing a state religion, not to prevent you from singing happy birthday to Jesus.

A Marine Corps Sergeant or Officer making the troops acknowledge Jesus in any way establishes religion just as surely as putting up a brick and mortar building and giving sermons. The SCOTUS has backed up this view many times.

However, the same would apply to a State Guard, because of the 14th amendment.
