Can you specify what type of food coloring? I think that's what went wrong when my mother and I tried to make one. The box says concentrated gel. So, is that what I use, or any type of concentrated food coloring? Is there a specific brand I should buy? Sorry for all the questions. I just really want to know how to make the cake right.

@fanime1 - Hi yes it was the Wilton's concentrated gel colouring which I used, you only need a tiny amount to get great colour depth and it doesn't thin the mixture too. I have always been happy with the results it gives. Happy baking :o)

@MrStupidCupcake you need at least the gel food colouring or the dye colouring because regular food colouring is mostly water, and it will water down your batter.

@MrStupidCupcake -I don't lie :o(, I was meaning the gel colourings in that statement as you only need a tiny amount of that type to get the depth of colour, if you used the liquid type I suspect you would use most of the bottle to get the same effect :o)

If you take that big serrated knife that you used to cut the cake with and cut the roundness from the tops of each cake, and then stack them bottom up, it'll come out more evenly. :D (So much cake! It looks so delicious!)
