I have an 82 honda xl125, and when you rev it up and let the throttle snap back closed, sometimes it goes to a nice perfect idle, but sometimes it just dies dead as a doornail . I have messed with the ignition and gone through the carb. several times but it still does it. Do I need to toss the carb and just get a new one ? Anyone have any ideas ?

my bike is the same mate, the carb is done and pumps way to much fuel through. the mix is too rich. what I have done until i get a carb kit is take of the stock air box off and replace it with a small pod filter, they are like $30 (australian) on ebay... At least you can kick start yours, i gotta roll start mine every time!

my friend has the same bike and he got it for $20, but the thing is the spark will go for a second or two then goes away, we tried adjusting the timing but the samething happends. so now ima buy it of of my friend and get my uncle to fix it with me, any idea where to start first to fix the problem with the timming?

@CoolSypherz76 The bike uses a Points style Capacitive ignition system, Which is under the flywheel, The points gap usually gets dirty/corroded, You can access them through the holes in the flywheel, Use a paper nail file to clean between the contacts and it should take care of it.

sounds rich...slow revs and no idle...i had a newer xr80 that i got non running for 50 bux...tht lil bike carried my big ass around (210) for lik a week befo it bit the big 1ne...and still all it needed was a head gasket...bought for 50 non running...sold for 75...really not running lol

Hi Airport , You mentioned it was seized , I presume you stripped down , and removed everything , bu theoff chance di d you remove the timing cog on the crank as well , as these , werent keyed , so if you did , you may have put the cog back on the wrong setting , being for m,emory either the highest point of the gear TDC or the lowest TDC . That motor should be screaming its guts out

I cleaned em using a cheap cardboard nail file that I cut in half. It is running better now than it was in that video, Since then the shifting problem is fixed, and the clutch works.

This thing has too much compression! this video was after a rebuild. Shifter problem was from rust/burnt on oil on the shift star and clutch plates.

Yeah, Its been a while since this video, Since then I have rebuilt the bottom end, All 5 gears work, Starts in 1/4 kick. Purrs like a kitten at idle and yeah. It was tempermental in that vid because clutch/gears were siezed up.
