hey, joe is, by all accounts, a really great guy. but he appeals to a very small group of people. bieber plays to stadiums. satriani + vai + gilbert together can't sell out stadiums, only small halls.

almost anyone can devote a major portion of their life to sitting in a bedroom learning to shred. learning the modes (something btw i can teach in 10 minutes -- all positions, all over the fretboard). satriani displays very little real, innate talent. nice guy tho.

the genius is in selecting the appropriate context for that melody, context as defined by the chords and the rhythm.

rock-and-roll is rhythm and blues. it is the blues scale played against a rhythm. that is all it is.

simple, but ingeniously applied by the beatles, the stones, the who, led zeppelin, etc, etc, etc.

intelligent lyrics that SAY something are also important ingredients to a great song

classical music is FAR more complex than satriani's. again, it's context. the arrangement of the pieces in the orchestra provides the richness and texture of the music, not the melody.

i am not cancelling satriani's work. but it is a lot closer to elevator music than dylan or the beatles. again, the lyrics (more specifically, what they say) add yet another dimension of richness.

bieber's lyrics convey a mood to his audience. they make his audience feel.
