@MrNotyag You should read "Rage for Perfection" which I think was re-titled later but was an early Mcenroe biography from a well respected tennis journo who travelled the circuit. It mentions a net -cord in this match which turned the game. Connors was out of it, two sets to one down, got a bit of luck and Mcenroe gave up. And he really does give up. ESPN played the match in real time recently and Mcenroe sulks, he throws in the towel, looks like he gives up. He was flawed in that respect.
@MrNotyag We know that's what you say but the facts and the head to heads and the experts would agree with me. Connors beat an ageing Rosewall in 74 and a sulking Mac in 82. He didn't beat Borg at Wimbledon in four attempts, (twice dispatched in 3 sets) and his game was pretty pedestrian with an at times embarrassingly inept serve. He had courage and heart, but not as much talent.
@MrNotyag But he lost heavily to Mcenroe at Wimbledon in 1984 - when Mcenroe played flawless tennis. I think even Connors himself would admit Mcenroe was the better player between them
1 dislike is from McEnroe. John is known to stay up late at night going around to each and every "mcenroe vs connors" video and clicking the dislike button.
i was just 18 yrs old and at this match with my dad sitting just behind the members and royal box and if you listen very carefully at 3.56 on this video you can hear me shouting out "same again jimmy" at the second match point (jimmy had just double faulted !). my dad nearly killed me
i remember i was the only one out of my mates at the time who tipped jimmy to win that final . boy they got some stick . still brings a smile to my face
John was more talented, and so was Bjorn, but nobody had the passion for the sport and the strenght of will that Connors had. Not then, not now. Can anyone imagine him "taking a break" like McEnroe did, or retiring at 26, like Borg, or leaving the sport when you are the current US Open Champion, like Sampras?
Without any doubt BigMac was (perhaps is) arrogant, disagreeable, unpleasant, rude, in a word: a huge asshole ... I don't know what kind of person he was (is) out of the tennis court, but when you watch him playing tennis you can't believe what he is able to do with his racquet. he was (perhaps is) a genius, a true artist, an inimitable tennis player for his talent and his style.
Borg has had, and still today has, many clones. But no one else can ever imitate John McEnroe.
Mac had a right old sulk in this match. You don't see it here but trust me he could have won it easily. Instead he turned into a 6 year old. "If you don't let me win I'm going to pretend I'm not really trying" It was pathetic. And I'm a Mac fan!
I was actually glad that Connors won it in 1982. That year saw a brief Connors rise back to the top. I was eating a lovely omelette with whole wheat toast, fruit juice and coffee while watching that particular "Breakfast at Wimbledon".
Hardcore tennis!

Jim Connors was the best, I have respect for both of these men, but McEnroe's tantrums were just the worst.

I don't know how connors has energy after all those sets to cheer for every point. after 1 set I can barely toss the ball up for a serve.

J. McEnroe was humbled here. But for me he is the greatest ever tennis player.

@rasputin725 Yeah, this was a lousy final game. Mac was beat before it began and could not get his racket on anything. Borg & Mac had better games.

It was so great that Connors won .
I was always so unhappy when the undeserving Mcenmouth won anything.

Connors really is an asshole as a person, extremely arrogant. He likes to let people work for him and laugh at them, seriously.

yeah, he was. He was fab that year. Was that the last year before pressurised tennis balls? I wonder...

Perhaps... I do not know.

I'm glad he won it this year too, as he got totally demolished in '84.

Jimmy Connors's resurgence as world #1 in 1982 was predicted in a French tennis magazine in 1981.
It is a shame he never won the French Open... :-(
Harnolb 2 years ago
How humiliating for Connors that must have been :-(
QuieroGuerra 2 years ago
Nearly. But don't forget two words-"French" Open".
Brandojack1369 2 years ago
True. Lendl made an incredible comeback.
The wind did not come out of McEnroe's sails for 1984, though.
The mental game in tennis is incredible.
QuieroGuerra 2 years ago
@QuieroGuerra What are you, some kind of Boludo?
TimeGents 10 months ago
Uhhmm, no.
'84 was his best year, but also in that year he lost the French Open, which was by far the loss that mattered to him most in his entire career.
Nirky 2 years ago
OK, understandable. He missed the Grand Slam. He still went 84-3 though.
