Cool Video, I've always wanted to do this with my car GPS, just never have. The reason your altitude varied after about 10,000 feet is because traditional aircraft altimeters work off air pressure. Since air pressure changes over distances, altimeters are set to a standard atmospheric pressure setting of 29.92"hg while in Class A airspace.
@free2rhyme29100 So GPS receivers are called receivers because they don't transmit. I'm sure there are a gazillion articles out there on the intertubes but GPS receivers just get time information from known points in space (figuratively and actually).
I used my Garmin Nuvi 260 GPS on a commercial flight as a passenger from Davao City Philippines to Manila Philippines. The unit recorded the speed and displayed the places we were flying over.
I had to sit by the window to keep satellite reception.
@free2rhyme29100 If you look closely at the video this looks like a private flight, not a regular passenger flight like American Airlines or something like that. If that's the case then all the rules are different. For regular passenger flights I believe you can use electronics devices above 10,000 feet.
@ChaseThatTornado67 Actually that would be a really great video to see... someone doing this with the nuvi OUTSIDE of the plane. If you find that video, post the link here man!
Well done video. It would be interesting to see if the 265WT works on a commercial flight, especially trans Atlantic or the like, you'd be able to see exactly where you're at.
I fully intend on doing that next week on a 4.5 hour flight although it will not be over an ocean. However, I won't likely be able to leave the thing on during take off or landing.
Regarding the triangle as a vehicle... I remember doing the obligatory updates after the purchase but don't remember specifically getting the triangle vehicle. I remember selecting it after the updates as i went along setting preferences though.
@mykallb I can't see why not. I took my Garmin 750 on an overseas flight and while I needed to next to the window to pick up a signal, the Garmin was able to record a speed of over 1000+ mph.
@jonvagnier You're right of course. Thanks for noticing the mistake. We measure in metric up here so it was actually only 1046 KM/H or about 650 mph. Youtube doesn't let me post URLs but here's the address of the screen shot: bit.ly / 9RTLM4

If you want to estimate your arrival time remember to put it in pedestrian mode otherwise the Garmin wants to put you on a road.

@free2rhyme29100 Calm yourself, the pilots are using GPS, already proving that there is no harm done by GPS.

Can you grab a vid of that one too? Really like the late afternoon shots out the window of the runway.
BTW, where did you get the triangle for your vehicle? Did you get an extras pack? My 265WT came with just two blue vehicles.
Thanks
