@SoCalyankeefan Not a lot of people use their keyboard while mixing. Most of the time it is a set of turn tables controlling the software and the laptop is just out of reach. Because most of the time you might only need the keyboard for looking up song names for any reason or another. The controller allows you to clean up the area a bit for a smooth performance. And it's ease of use is outstanding. What if you can't see your keyboard in a dimly lit booth?
@SoCalyankeefan I would agree. If someone made a program to remap the keys on the keyboard to resemble an emulated MIDI controller. Then have a single key combination to toggle the function back and forth. My $80 USD Razer Lycosa keyboard would work as a good controller. Though if you watch Cotts. He presses multiple buttons at once. Look up Keyboard Ghosting. That's where the problem lies. But they make keyboards tha have no ghosting. They are almost $200 each...
@carlrose01 Cheap midi controllers are honestly terrible. Ever wonder why Ravine gave away his Mixvibes controller? The reason I like the midi fighter is because it feels so great to use. I know it's expensive but honestly at the end of the day you get what you pay for. It's got solid arcade buttons that will survive a huge amount of punishment. DJ gear has a tendency to be destroyed if not built well.
@SuperTonoo if your just starting DJing and havent had gear before, the Numark Mixtrack is definitely the best low price midi controller around. it will teach you everything you need to know and last you a while if you dont beat up on it, ive been using one for about a year now, and it only cost me 100 dollars
@nateslagle727 if you alreday have a controller mapped to traktor, you cannot use the big import buttin down the bottom, you need to go to the list of midi controllers in controller manager, and beneathe that, is an edit button click it and a list will come up, on the list will be 'add', use that to load the .tsi
I honestly don't get how a 16 button controller could cost $200. You might as well buy a PS3 controller for $60 (which has 15 buttons and 6 axis) and set it up yourself.
lookin nice but sheesh $200 us wow thats alot lol i made a midi controller using an old usb game controller and some of these arcade buttons and it worked great :P i am making a clear acrylic case for it and then it will have lights also :)
@pudd9ers May I ask this in nicest way possible but how do you plan to start DJing without some cash I only started a month ago I have a simple emachine laptop windows 7 works really well and spent $400 on a controller and a pair of headphones thats maybe the minimum price maybe a bit lower to start but good luck on your endeavors :) ( and I'm just answering from my perspective even though you were directing your question towards cotts)
Holy shit, that demo must have taken some mad skillz... The way you co-ordinated like 6 or 7 effects at once looks more challenging than playing a fast paced song on a piano...
You can also do this with a normal Arcade Stick. It's a chore getting HID to MIDI and then having whatever able to map/read it. But it's so much cooler because you can control with the joystick too (although you're out 8 buttons). And you have an Arcade Stick to play Street Fighter with. ;D
haha nice , i got SN 119 , FYI Midi fighter Pro out now well worth a look into and yes you can custom the LEDS and make arcade buttons transparent if you want
NOTE it is cheaper to DIY and put it together with parts they sell on store
