The word "Maatr" is a word from Proto Indo-European. Sanskrit and English, along with most other European and North Indian languages, have the same ultimate root, or at least influence.
It is not that one borrows a word from the other. They just have common roots. Just as the beaver and the capybara are of same descent, but that doesn't mean one came directly from the other.

England and Germany are closer regional neighbors than India... Indian was basically isolated from the world for centuries, so how would it have influenced English before any European stepped foot in India.
