  • This is exactly what i've been planning to do! a while back i found an edger on the side of the road (don't know if it runs yet) and i have a dc generator. My goal is to have a fairly quiet fuel efficient generator to run at night or cloudy days to supplement the bank. I will be happy with 5 amps over 6-8 hours of darkness!

By the way years ago I built a motor alternator (60 amps) when the batteries were low my 5 horsepower wasn't enough. felt like it needed 8 horsepower.

  • can you connect the motor to a battery to act as an electric start

  • i will erase this tab

  • Where did you dinf that motor for $5 EBAy?

  • Try a alternator and an inverter! Then you can use real stuff on it, plus charge car batteries.

  • Using the commonly seen ratio of 500 in retail 110 vac based generators, 3HP x 500 = 1500 watts. 1500 watts / 12v = 125 amps. So that 3 HP you got should be able to push a decent bit of load assuming the engine actually can still make 3 HP.

  • @AlternativePowerMan

The DC motor I am using as a generator cannot handle that sort of current. I am badly overloading it with the 16 Amps I currently have the unit producing. The windings of the motor just can't handle any more current. The generator is doing the job I designed it for, so I am happy with it. I may someday experiment with either mounting a car alternator on it, or using this monster PMDC motor I have which is rated at around 100 Amps. It weighs a ton though.

  • People like you will be indispensable when the zombie apocalypse hits.

  • Free Energy is real but the coverup is strong, if you are interested in a REAL free energy machine then just search for the LT MAGNET MOTOR in the youtube video search , it is probably the ONLY working magnet motor out there. Join the free energy revolution!!

  • can you recommend where to get a motor like this? what are its specs?

  • Thumbs up if Lifehacker brought you here.

  • Interesting. Would an automotive alternator generate power in the same way? Odds are old but working alternators are FAR cheaper around where I live than permanent magnet motors, or is it not the same type of thing

  • @neothespian

I'm not sure the speed of this particular engine is high enough to produce significant amounts of power from an automotive alternator. Other engines may work better. Also changing the sizes of the pulleys on the engine and alternator could increase the speed the alternator is driven.

  • @omegageek64 Small engines like this are usually governed to 3600 RPM, which is good enough to drive an automotive alternator. If all else fails, optical tachometers aren't terribly expensive, and are good tools to have around.

  • great build I hope it works great for you.TAKE CARE
