it's one of a couple of things i can think of. he's manipulating a harmonic or he's using those knobs on the bottom of the body of the guitar, you hear it in the fade from piano to guitar at the start.

In this solo, Matt is totally unique. He makes his tapping sound totally space age, with his whammy pedal effects and suchlike. I think it's safe to say he sounds like no one on earth (ecxept, of course, Tom Morello - Matt's biggest inspiration)

I tend to disagree. In my oppinion the pinkpop 2007 performance is better because of the overall sound of the guitar, bass and drums together, which is much bigger and heavier, (also the fact that he uses a keyboard here instead of the piano).

However, I do think this is the best solo of all newborn performances, I think it has been the big influence on all the newborn solos of today (including pinkpop 2007).

It was a radio show. The crowd was unfamiliar with the band back in 2004 and the webcast pretty much mutes the crowd. I was at this show though, which is when I discovered Muse. I was flipping out after this solo. Basically flogging myself for not having heard of this band yet.
