There are so many people who rear their ugly heads in disgust over these videos, and chances are - they might be even more outraged if they were "put down" / killed to end their suffering before it happens.
If someone dares to say the person who's running the place "deserves to die" or something of that nature, why don't they have the nuts to get up, get out, move there, and do something? Or better yet DONATE so they have the funds to do it right
This man was not running a sanctuary, he was HOARDING these poor, defenseless, beautiful babies, and he should be sent to jail for a good long time!! AND he needs to get some mental help to treat his condition. Just because he signed a paper and surrendered all the cats, does not prevent him from moving to another state and starting this all over again!!

Why wasn't this guy reported by the people who he didn't allow to enter. That certainly was a red flag. And why did he think he didn't need volunteers? Maybe there's mental illness running rampant in this case. Hoarders hoard and the animals suffer. When someone is found to be an animal abuser or hoarder, the law should ban them from ever owning a pet again.

How do they know these cats have FIV? Maybe they have other diseases like rabies or something else that is contagious to people or other animals. No vet on the premises. How can they make that diagnosis???
It is SO easy to stand outside of a situation and throw judgments on people. Have you EVER tried to work in the rescue industry? Maury was doing his best. It's REALLY difficult to get the funds necessary to run a facility like this. Maybe you should've volunteered there and lent a hand? Maybe we should pitch in together and help, rather than point fingers and BLAME all the time. You talk a good game. SO, what are you prepared to DO?
What am I prepared to DO? I've already done it. I was part of the medical triage that came into that place and finally got those cats the care they needed and their way out . Maury's "best" is no excuse for this. And yes, I have alot of experience with what you call "rescue industry".

As a creative director at a large agency I also have the ability to pool resources for all of our local events from a marketing perspective. One kitty was RIV positive. Maury was the only person in NC, SC, GA, and FL who would take him. I drove for 7 hours to get him there. The other cat was "vet recommended." I picked him up in a Northern Florida town and drove him for 7 hours to 10th Life. He has Leukemia. These are beautiful cats. Can anyone help with them? They should have had a chance to live and die (normally) at 10th Life. I am devestated.
I am so glad I took pictures when I went there. I was there twice - once for Animal control and once for a vet. I have great pictures from every part of the Sanctuary. I talked for a LONG time to a person with oversight for 10th Life. The ONLY complaint was that Maury was often too slow to euthanize. Maury tried too hard to save the kitties. Some of those cats shown in this video should have been humanely euthanized. There is no way in hell they could recuperate under such conditions. I'm sorry, but this gives 'no kill' a very bad name indeed. A place like this doesn't save lives, it inhumanely extends death.

Better that any cat that is suffering like this be humanely euthanized than live in this hell-hole "rescue." Only those responsible for this animal-Auschwitz would defend this rescue. If you seriously were a cat-lover, you would have done something to fix the situation, not wasted your breath defending this sanctuary. Would you want your pets living there? You clearly are an advocate for 10th Life, but I dont see you telling us who you are either.
Actually my husband and I WERE DOING something to fix the situation as were many of our friends that are devoted to cat rescue... we have been down there in the past and most recently doing repairs and replacing a roof on one of the enclosures...so I was not wasting my breath at all just defending this place.
Being euthanized is a helluva lot kinder than being left to linger to death like they were. At least the death will be quick and relatively painless, not days of agony waiting to die.
Not to mention even if they had humane conditions, it really isn't humane to just leave a cat in a cage for the rest of its life. At some point I do think it's kinder to just put them to sleep (and this is after working at a vet and watching a cat that was boarded there for months at a time).
I actually took a trip to 10th Life and visited unannounced. I was given full access and I took several videos of what I saw. I am uploading them and urge you all to take a look at what I saw personally.
I once had a ballet teacher tell me that "if you do something important and radical with your life, you will live under constant criticism." She was so right. So, this means that the FIV cat and the leukemia positive cat that I transported because nobody else would give them sanctuary, will die. Maury has given his life for this?
Update (November 17, 2009): WBBH-TV Ch. 2 has reported that Maury Swee, 10th Life's president, has "voluntarily surrendered all the cats from 10th Life and has signed a document saying he won't accept any more cats." Mr. Swee is reportedly under investigation for animal cruelty. This may be the end for 10th Life!
I can't seem to get my comments posted. I have given great thought to this. I work for a great no kill, clean cat shelter. I have visited 10th Life. At my shelter, I COULD take pics of sick kitties; I COULD take a pic of a dead kitty;I could take pics of rat stuff. But, we stay on top of this, and so does 10th Life. Hoarder does not work in this case. I was encouraged to visit. I tried to do volunteer work this summer, but sugrery intefered. Don't believe all that you see. 10th Life - WOW

Since my last response, I have given a lot of thought to this serious matter. I love cats and work closely with a no kill fabulous shelter in my region. We recently took in a discarded, very sick cat. I could have posted her picture. We had a cat who died. I could have taken her picture. We had a rat problem. I could have taken related pictures. This place needs to be closed down! Its nothing more than a cat experiment facility/death camp! If this guy is experimenting on cats without a license then he should go to jail! If any of us would go out and kill or torcher a cat (s) the law would be coming down on us with fines and jail time!

Last night was part two of the investigative TV news report into 10th Life. In the report, 10th Life's president, Maury Swee, admits to conducting "experiments and scientific research" using cats at the sanctuary! (10th Life is not a USDA-licensed research facility.) When people drop cats off at 10th Life, are they aware that they are turning the innocent animals over to a mad scientist? To me, this looks like a textbook case of animal hoarding. Its typical for people with this mentality to hoard as many animals as possible, thinking they are saving them from euthanasia, when in reality they are suffering a much much much worse fate. Something must be done about this!

This is just insane, my wife and I volunteer at no kill cat shelter here in Collier County and it is nothing like this! At the main shelter the cats are all kept in a great big air-conditioned room, overages are sent to volunteers homes to be kept until they can be adopted out! The cats are seen by a vet, given shots, the whole 9 yards! Sorry but this is just bull shit! The cats we have with us are in A/C and get fresh food and water daily with letter box changes and cleaned daily!
If you don't like how things are done at this rescue then get off your lazy ass and do something to help. It seems like the people that protest the most are the ones that do nothing.
A couple of days there and you know it all. Everyone I've talked to says the photos are recent and very real. Why only after the video do the cats get vaccines. They call that covering up. Why only after he is exposed does he start to clean up and tell lies? Why do so many die there? That doesn't happen at humanely run shelters. If you are going to help him clean up his act you are enabling a hoarder, but if you must, don't EVER STOP because it will go back to the house of horrors.
Because the person who took these photos admitted to authorities that these photos were not taken this year. I was there for ANNUAL vaccination which were already scheduled and will be continuing throughout the month. I plan on going there again to help the vet. Have you talked to their vet? I have also been there. I guess the most surprising thing to me is the response from people who have not been there at all but who have such scary strong opinions. I have even spent time with the Hendry County Animal Control Officer who has had oversight of this facility. He was, at that time, totally supportive.
CatsWelfare, If you are taking proper care of your cat then she is getting medical care, basic care, and love right? That would be the opposite of what the cats get at 10th Life as you can CLEARLY see in the pics. Big difference. I don't think anyone wants the cats PTS. I was just there 3 days ago, when were you there last? I found cats that I took there 3 months ago and cats I took there last year. All were healthy and happy. I have friends who have been there all weekend doing construction and when I was there, so was the vet doing vaccinations. If you haven't been there lately or haven't been there at all, be careful how you watch this video. This person has an adgenda and has admitted that these photos were NOT taken this year.
The only agenda this person has for taking the pictures is to help the neglected cats since the authorities don't want to be bothered. No shelter rescue or santuaries have ALL healthy cats that is part of rescue work which I have done for the past 7 years. As well as TNR. Any non-profit has PUBLIC records and all money is accounted for. I never said I had only been there once. I checked on cats that I sent there 3 months ago as well as cats from last year. I noticed many posters here have brand new accounts, since the video was posted and have only followed this video. If you know so much then I know you are part of the problem
So you're saying just because people have information they are part of the problem? Also, you contradicted yourself. Are all the cats healthy or not? I didn't think so. It is documented by a vet. Unhealthy cats should not be given vaccines. There are several eye witnesses to the recent dead and dying cats. Stop lying for Maury. All photos were taken this year. Why have hundreds upon hundreds of cats died there if there is consistent vet care? They must not know what they are doing or lying?

This place is not a shelter or a sanctuary. It's more like a kitty concentration camp. ANYONE who has taken a cat here please check on them and if still alive get them out! I've also been there many times and know the pics are sincere, unfortunately.
I have been to 10th Life twice. I took two cats there. One was sent from Animal Control, and one was sent by a vet. There was always staff cleaning dishes and floors. A sick cat was immediately removed and treated. I talked to the Animal Control Director who said that the facility was old, but the care was good. Instead of whining and complaining, let's send the dollars necessary to update the facility.
Honestly, the scariest thing is Maury's mentality. He needs to be willing to take each individuals cats personal situation and well-being into consideration and not just lump them all into a category. Once the quality of life is gone, just keeping them alive for the sake of avoiding death as long as possible is not humane. Cats earned the 9 LIVES they get, Maury took it upon himself to play God and force them to exist beyond that into their 10th life...pure egoism!
I were sentenced to a life of misery and containment in a 2 x 3 box, which they stay in if no room or if sick. And what about the ones that DO need to be euthanized? When is that call made and how long do they have to wait and suffer? If this sanctuary were being run properly, this video would have been made. It is to bring awareness and help to a situation that is clearly imbalanced. Hopefully many changes will be made and more help will come from this and the cats will have a better life.
The feces is not the biggest issue, yet it seems to be getting alot of attention. However, the number of feces in each cage goes to show that these cages aren't tended to very often, which is the issue. Animals are being neglected and they were when I was there. The only help he had at the time was a 75yr old lady who was in a wheel chair who was only interested in petting this one dieing kitten she kept on her lap. A fellow cat rescuer was there yesterday (Sunday) nothing was wrong, I am going on Thursday while the vet is there, and another fellow rescuer will be there on Saturday. This video has a purpose and it is not for the cats' welfare, you are being used.

How dare I , huh? Some should be euthanized and many shouldn't. If you've been there you know it doesn't look like that. The buildings in the video aren't there anymore. But, I guess I could say the same to you and we could argue on endlessly. But, I'm going to volunteer my time and resources to help improve 10th life rather than shut it down. Ultimately, that decision will be up to governments, not knee-jerk reactions by well meaning animal lovers to a video that has a slanderous agenda.

I have done cat rescue and TNR for over 15 yrs so I am aware of what goes along with it. A few yrs ago I visited 10th Life with Maury because I was warned to do so after I had already given 3 ferals to him. When I was there with a fellow rescuer, we were both very disturbed in what we saw. When I expressed my concern to Maury I was given some of the same excuses that I read in some of these comments left by so called rescuers. I begged Maury to give the 3 cats back which he refused. This "Maury" sounds like an "animal hoarding rescuer" -- plenty of those around, sadly. Please call the local animal control and county commissioner. When calling animal control, get a CASE # and follow up on actions taken. FL has open records laws, so make an anonymous complaint so there is no "retaliation" if the offending party decides to get nasty. Also, any emails to public officials are PUBLIC RECORD! So because someone knows how to do some PR work makes a video inaccurate? They started with 1200 and are down to apprx. 350 now. If you know so much about this place where are those missing cats? They don't do adoptions. Could they have all died? Or have been euthanized?

But, I have personally seen this organization in action and they have transported cats throughout Florida to receive treatment and care. I think everyone should know that I have worked with this organization for years and this does not paint an accurate picture of the facility. Keep in mind most of the kitties coming to this facility have preexisting conditions and this is the only Sanctuary trying to help these kitties with incurable conditions (distemper, FIV, leukemia and herpes of the eye) they are getting revolutionary veterinary care here but it is expensive and they need help from the public.
I've volunteered at several shelters that housed hundreds of cats and never saw this much diarrhea, drooling, skin cond., and skinny cats. I wonder if they have had a vet to come out to see what is the problem here. Are the sick cats in the photos still alive or dead? If dead were they treated by a vet? How many cats are kept in the cages in this heat? Have any others died in the cages besides the orange one? Are they still taking cats into this place with all these problems?
Having worked in these situations before with Best Friends, I know that you can put 55 feral cats in a room and the WILL use the litter box (for the most part.) I am waiting for someone from 10thLife to say "THIS IS NOT OUR SHELTER" and I'm not hearing it. Whether you see it or not, if this truly documents conditions there, you have a problem.
FeralFletch: I myself have personally BEEN to Best Friends and volunteered. I PERSONALLY have cleaned some of the houses/rooms when in the morning there has been shit and piss on the walls and floors. This of course was in the geriatric and the nuerological problem kitty wards. This video is NOT showing the real picture.
That is not ALWAYS the case, I have foster kittens who are not feral and they don't use their litterbox. I've had ferals thru TNR that do or don't use their litterbox. Why does 10th Life have to respond to this, that only legitimizes something that is untrue and slanderous.
I think these clips show the real story. I do not trust any sanctuary. Too many become little "hoarder-villes". Many of these cats need to be humanely euthanized. There are worse things in this world than a humane death. Living with hoarders is one of those things.

It is understandable that people who have brought cats to 10th Life, and/or donated money, would be defensive against accusations of animal neglect. Many of the people who have posted comments here undoubtedly feel emotionally tied to this place, and you don't want to believe that anything could be wrong. But your attempts to explain away these photographs are not convincing. The photos are proof that conditions inside 10th Life are bad and cats are not receiving appropriate veterinary care.
We saw the same thing from FLOCK when they were being prosecuted. I only want the truth. If I were 10thLife, I'd be posting current pics with dated papers, to show the world that there is not a problem. If not, well I think we can all safely assume that things are not fine out there. Having been at Ground Zero in Pahrump I know how bad things can be, but we can help, if only allowed.
How exactly did you come by these photos? I suppose in their efforts to cover things up by "not encouraging volunteers and visitors" (contrary to statements on their website), they just let you wander round at will, repeatedly, collecting all your "evidence"? Your attempts to explain your photos are also not convincing; mostly because you haven't offered any.
Do you contend that these pictures are not 10thLife? Please let us know, as all we (at least most of us) want is the truth. If the pictures are acutally of 10thLife, then it is immaterial how they were taken, only what they document. If my shelter were under attack, I would post pictures with a current newspaper ASAP (as I've suggested) to dispel all rumors--even if I felt wrongly accused.
FeralFletch, I want this person to authenticate their "work". I feel it's a valid question and directly tied to the legitimacy of their claims. Aren't YOU curious? You'll notice despite my repeated inquiries, they have not addressed this. As far as what they document, the video is so one-sided as to be laughable. Cats DO get well there; they do have well-ventilated structures with tons of lounging areas and ample food & water. You'll note none of that is shown.
Honestly, no I don't care how the video came about. I'm worried that it actually documents condititions at the shelter there. I don't care about blame. All I care about is fixing the problem (if it exists) and it seems as those it actually does.

It is very sad this place has been misrepresented in this way. Many cats are dumped on them in the worst shape imaginable. I foster, adopt and TNR feral cats and am a feral feeder like the owner of 10th life was before he opened the sanctuary. I agree the place is a bit run down, but the cats are cared for and this video has been embellished. You should donate your time and money to help instead of posting videos that are untrue!!
I am a rescue volunteer and have been to 10th Life. I was welcomed as a visitor and given a tour of the entire property. The screen enclosure areas are all outside and get full ventilation and sunlight. There is also an enclosed area with many cat doors for them to roam in and out as they wish. I never saw the filth as portrayed in these photos. If the creator of this video says people are not allowed in and volunteers are unwelcome, how did they manage this footage?
All - I agree we need to spay & neuter....but take it one step further to s/n the neighborhood STRAYS. i go to adoption events and most of the people i mention that to say, oh those aren't MY cats...uh huh, they are when you foot the tax bill for animal services to kill them all.
I have been there twice in the last 6 weeks, once unannounced. There are dozens and dozens of cats and I was very impressed with how clean it is. I do fostering myself and every morning I dread going into the "cattery" because i have to clean up messes on the floor and such. There is NO SMELL at 10th life! Hah!
There are many FIV/FeLV cats there so seeing sick cats is expected simply because they are infected with a chronic and deadly virus. I have sanctuaried cats with FIV and when full blown, there isnt anything to do. Had someone come to my home when they were on downslides and took pics but did not state they were FIV, I could have been accused of neglect. The truth is all got support care, special kitty soup several times/day and lots of love until they crossed the Bridge. Pics cant show that.
Spay and Neuter your pets and this won't happen. Simple as that! If you don't like that idea then support the people that are trying to do the right thing. Volunteer at your local shelter or give donations so they can get better care for them. I am not going to judge them from the photos because kennels can become very dirty overnight (personal experience from volunteering). Make a difference and take control. Help you local shelters.
Amen. I've done rescue work for nearly a decade. We get kitties from dumpsters, half starved, sick. I could collect a bunch of pics just like those in this video in the course of a couple of months and put them together out of context making out rescue group look terrible if I wanted to, but it'd be just as much of a lie. We rescue and find homes for 7-900 cats and kittens a year in Central Florida and we have worked with 10th life. Rescue work is not pretty and they do the best they can.
You know I don't care where this is, it doesn't matter - but I will say that whomever is responsible for the 'care' of these cats needs to be SHUT DOWN and the cats removed to a place where they will get proper care/treatment and that includes the living condition. There is NO EXCUSE for what I see here other than neglect. The smell just walking through must be horrific, can't imagine what it is like for them to be forced to live in it ! Yeah, shut it down. Why have a place that takes in terminally ill cats no one else wants, runs clinical trials on drugs that could CURE FIV and FLV. Why have a place that takes in the cats no one else will, thanks to irresponsible pet owners. How about being part of the solution, instead of the problem? I have been doing cat rescue work world wide with some of the most reputable animal welfare organisations - animal rescue/care is what I do and have been doing since well, probably long before you were born.
There is only one place these cats can go and that is to be euthanized. I'm sure you think that is a better thing than this. Have you worked as a volunteer for any type of rescue before? I doubt it.
If your comment is to me, yes... I've done rescue work for over 8 years now. And I've been to 10th life several times. its never pretty, but they do good work there. Although I do agree that many of the cats they take in should be euthanized, there are alot that get to live and can even help find cures for feline aids and other diseases. BIAS!! I stopped in the middle because two of the "sick" cats shown are in the infirmary! If they are in a carrier they are in isolated care. Has the person filming ever taken care of ferals in an enclosure? They don't always use the pan. The picture of fecal matter and urine on the floor did not include the other side of the room where the pans are located. The cat with the fur missing likely has a flea allergy. So who can just walk up to a feral and give flea meds?
The "carriers" in question are big enough to hold a large German Shepherd. They have litter boxes, a box to sleep in and food/water, shelter from the elements. more than the cat would have if it were left outside to fend for itself.

It is understandable that fellow cat lovers would react this way. It is easy to mislead those who love animals and tug at our heart strings! Like a poster said before, this person must have some sort of agenda and it isn't a truthful one!!
Well, I say Brits rock! Yes, russ, some of the conditions in the pics are filthy and were most likely taken out of context and before any volunteers had cleaned. I've been to 10th life several times, to pick up feral kittens and drop off FIV/FIP + kitties. The majority of the cats are terminally ill, feral or both. Litter box habits are lacking all around. Considering the place runs on donations and volunteers, they do the best they can. Its a losing uphill battle, but they fight it anyways.
Have you been there? If not, don't get your panties in a wad. I've been there NUMEROUS times and have taken cats there, brought some back - 2 just got adopted last week. Instead of being negative, why not be part of a solution and not just yammer? Waa-waah.

Maybe there's mental illness running rampant in this case. Hoarders hoard and the animals suffer. When someone is found to be an animal abuser or hoarder, the law should ban them from ever owning a pet again.

It is SO easy to stand outside of a situation and throw judgments on people. Have you EVER tried to work in the rescue industry? Maury was doing his best. It's REALLY difficult to get the funds necessary to run a facility like this. Maybe you should've volunteered there and lent a hand? As a creative director at a large agency I also have the ability to pool resources for all of our local events from a marketing perspective. One kitty was RIV positive. Maury was the only person in NC, SC, GA, and FL who would take him. I drove for 7 hours to get him there. The other cat was "vet recommended." I picked him up in a Northern Florida town and drove him for 7 hours to 10th Life. He has Leukemia. These are beautiful cats. Can anyone help with them? They should have had a chance to live and die (normally) at 10th Life. I am devestated.

I am so glad I took pictures when I went there. I was there twice - once for Animal control and once for a vet. I have great pictures from every part of the Sanctuary. I talked for a LONG time to a person with oversight for 10th Life. The ONLY complaint was that Maury was often too slow to euthanize. Maury tried too hard to save the kitties. I am just reporting this for those of you who want the other side of the story. Is there anyone out there who will take my 2 kitties? Onf

If you seriously were a cat-lover, you would have done something to fix the situation, not wasted your breath defending this sanctuary. Would you want your pets living there? Actually my husband and I WERE DOING something to fix the situation as were many of our friends that are devoted to cat rescue... we have been down there in the past and most recently doing repairs and replacing a roof on one of the enclosures...so I was not wasting my breath at all just defending this place.

Being euthanized is a helluva lot kinder than being left to linger to death like they were. At least the death will be quick and relatively painless, not days of agony waiting to die.
Not to mention even if they had humane conditions, it really isn't humane to just leave a cat in a cage for the rest of its life. At some point I do think it's kinder to just put them to sleep (and this is after working at a vet and watching a cat that was boarded there for months at a time).

Update (November 17, 2009): WBBH-TV Ch. 2 has reported that Maury Swee, 10th Life's president, has "voluntarily surrendered all the cats from 10th Life and has signed a document saying he won't accept any more cats." Mr. Swee is reportedly under investigation for animal cruelty. This may be the end for 10th Life!

I can't seem to get my comments posted. I have given great thought to this. I work for a great no kill, clean cat shelter. I have visited 10th Life. At my shelter, I COULD take pics of sick kitties; I COULD take a pic of a dead kitty;I could take pics of rat stuff. But, we stay on top of this, and so does 10th Life. Hoarder does not work in this case. I was encouraged to visit. I tried to do volunteer work this summer, but sugrery intefered. Don't believe all that you see. 10th Life - WOW

Since my last response, I have given a lot of thought to this serious matter. I love cats and work closely with a no kill fabulous shelter in my region. We recently took in a discarded, very sick cat. I could have posted her picture. We had a cat who died. I could have taken her picture. We had a rat problem. I could have taken related pictures. In the report, 10th Life's president, Maury Swee, admits to conducting "experiments and scientific research" using cats at the sanctuary! (10th Life is not a USDA-licensed research facility.) This is just insane, my wife and I volunteer at no kill cat shelter here in Collier County and it is nothing like this! At the main shelter the cats are all kept in a great big air-conditioned room, overages are sent to volunteers homes to be kept until they can be adopted out! The cats are seen by a vet, given shots, the whole 9 yards! Sorry but this is just bull shit! The cats we have with us are in A/C and get fresh food and water daily with letter box changes and cleaned daily!

A couple of days there and you know it all. Everyone I've talked to says the photos are recent and very real. Why only after the video do the cats get vaccines. They call that covering up. Why only after he is exposed does he start to clean up and tell lies? Why do so many die there? That doesn't happen at humanely run shelters. If you are going to help him clean up his act you are enabling a hoarder, but if you must, don't EVER STOP because it will go back to the house of horrors.

Because the person who took these photos admitted to authorities that these photos were not taken this year. I was there for ANNUAL vaccination which were already scheduled and will be continuing throughout the month. I plan on going there again to help the vet. Have you talked to their vet? I am unable to speak freely because of an ongoing investigation (NOT against 10th Life) but have photo and video documentation of my own that will be released when I am allowed to. I have also been there. I guess the most surprising thing to me is the response from people who have not been there at all but who have such scary strong opinions. I have even spent time with the Hendry County Animal Control Officer who has had oversight of this facility. He was, at that time, totally supportive.

That would be the opposite of what the cats get at 10th Life as you can CLEARLY see in the pics. Big difference. I don't think anyone wants the cats PTS. I was just there 3 days ago, when were you there last? I found cats that I took there 3 months ago and cats I took there last year. All were healthy and happy. I have friends who have been there all weekend doing construction and when I was there, so was the vet doing vaccinations. If you haven't been there lately or haven't been there at all, be careful how you watch this video. This person has an adgenda and has admitted that these photos were NOT taken this year.

No shelter rescue or santuaries have ALL healthy cats that is part of rescue work which I have done for the past 7 years. As well as TNR. Any non-profit has PUBLIC records and all money is accounted for. I never said I had only been there once. I checked on cats that I sent there 3 months ago as well as cats from last year. I have been to 10th Life twice. I took two cats there. One was sent from Animal Control, and one was sent by a vet. There was always staff cleaning dishes and floors. A sick cat was immediately removed and treated. I talked to the Animal Control Director who said that the facility was old, but the care was good. Instead of whining and complaining, let's send the dollars necessary to update the facility.

Honestly, the scariest thing is Maury's mentality. He needs to be willing to take each individuals cats personal situation and well-being into consideration and not just lump them all into a category. Once the quality of life is gone, just keeping them alive for the sake of avoiding death as long as possible is not humane. I were sentenced to a life of misery and containment in a 2 x 3 box, which they stay in if no room or if sick. And what about the ones that DO need to be euthanized? When is that call made and how long do they have to wait and suffer? If this sanctuary were being run properly, this video would have been made. It is to bring awareness and help to a situation that is clearly imbalanced. Hopefully many changes will be made and more help will come from this and the cats will have a better life.

The feces is not the biggest issue, yet it seems to be getting alot of attention. However, the number of feces in each cage goes to show that these cages aren't tended to very often, which is the issue. Animals are being neglected and they were when I was there. The only help he had at the time was a 75yr old lady who was in a wheel chair who was only interested in petting this one dieing kitten she kept on her lap. Ya know, I get a little concerned when outsiders try to second guess local public policing entities. It a PeTA ploy. Based on the quality of the video this is PeTa or one of it's copy cats orgs. PeTa hates domestic animals, most humans and any type of preditor. There are already PUBLIC RECORDS and you can find them on 10th Life's website, have you LOOKED? A fellow cat rescuer was there yesterday (Sunday) nothing was wrong, I am going on Thursday while the vet is there, and another fellow rescuer will be there on Saturday. This video has a purpose and it is not for the cats' welfare, you are being used.

Also, the US Humane Society -- call out the "big guns" if the local powers that be won't do anything. A little negative PR often does wonders for the local authorities to take action. But, I guess I could say the same to you and we could argue on endlessly. But, I'm going to volunteer my time and resources to help improve 10th life rather than shut it down. Ultimately, that decision will be up to governments, not knee-jerk reactions by well meaning animal lovers to a video that has a slanderous agenda.

the conditions to the authorities and I wasn't assured that it would be resolved by the response I was getting. I figured that since so many complaints had been made that eventually things would improve and by the looks of these pictures which are definately from the sanctuary, things have worsened! I have done cat rescue and TNR for over 15 yrs so I am aware of what goes along with it. A few yrs ago I visited 10th Life with Maury because I was warned to do so after I had already given 3 ferals to him. When I was there with a fellow rescuer, we were both very disturbed in what we saw. When I expressed my concern to Maury I was given some of the same excuses that I read in some of these comments left by so called rescuers. I begged Maury to give the 3 cats back which he refused. This "Maury" sounds like an "animal hoarding rescuer" -- plenty of those around, sadly. Please call the local animal control and county commissioner. When calling animal control, get a CASE # and follow up on actions taken. FL has open records laws, so make an anonymous complaint so there is no "retaliation" if the offending party decides to get nasty. Also, any emails to public officials are PUBLIC RECORD! So because someone knows how to do some PR work makes a video inaccurate? They started with 1200 and are down to apprx. 350 now. If you know so much about this place where are those missing cats? They don't do adoptions. Could they have all died? Or have been euthanized?

I think everyone should know that I have worked with this organization for years and this does not paint an accurate picture of the facility. Keep in mind most of the kitties coming to this facility have preexisting conditions and this is the only Sanctuary trying to help these kitties with incurable conditions (distemper, FIV, leukemia and herpes of the eye) they are getting revolutionary veterinary care here but it is expensive and they need help from the public.

I've volunteered at several shelters that housed hundreds of cats and never saw this much diarrhea, drooling, skin cond., and skinny cats. I wonder if they have had a vet to come out to see what is the problem here. Are the sick cats in the photos still alive or dead? If dead were they treated by a vet? How many cats are kept in the cages in this heat? Have any others died in the cages besides the orange one? Are they still taking cats into this place with all these problems?

Having worked in these situations before with Best Friends, I know that you can put 55 feral cats in a room and the WILL use the litter box (for the most part.) I am waiting for someone from 10thLife to say "THIS IS NOT OUR SHELTER" and I'm not hearing it. Whether you see it or not, if this truly documents conditions there, you have a problem.

That is not ALWAYS the case, I have foster kittens who are not feral and they don't use their litterbox. I've had ferals thru TNR that do or don't use their litterbox. Why does 10th Life have to respond to this, that only legitimizes something that is untrue and slanderous.

I think these clips show the real story. I do not trust any sanctuary. Too many become little "hoarder-villes". Many of these cats need to be humanely euthanized. There are worse things in this world than a humane death. Living with hoarders is one of those things.

It is understandable that people who have brought cats to 10th Life, and/or donated money, would be defensive against accusations of animal neglect. Many of the people who have posted comments here undoubtedly feel emotionally tied to this place, and you don't want to believe that anything could be wrong. But your attempts to explain away these photographs are not convincing. The photos are proof that conditions inside 10th Life are bad and cats are not receiving appropriate veterinary care.

We saw the same thing from FLOCK when they were being prosecuted. I only want the truth. If I were 10thLife, I'd be posting current pics with dated papers, to show the world that there is not a problem. If not, well I think we can all safely assume that things are not fine out there. Having been at Ground Zero in Pahrump I know how bad things can be, but we can help, if only allowed.

I suppose in their efforts to cover things up by "not encouraging volunteers and visitors" (contrary to statements on their website), they just let you wander round at will, repeatedly, collecting all your "evidence"? Your attempts to explain your photos are also not convincing; mostly because you haven't offered any.

If the pictures are acutally of 10thLife, then it is immaterial how they were taken, only what they document. If my shelter were under attack, I would post pictures with a current newspaper ASAP (as I've suggested) to dispel all rumors--even if I felt wrongly accused.

FeralFletch, I want this person to authenticate their "work". I feel it's a valid question and directly tied to the legitimacy of their claims. Aren't YOU curious? You'll notice despite my repeated inquiries, they have not addressed this. As far as what they document, the video is so one-sided as to be laughable. Cats DO get well there; they do have well-ventilated structures with tons of lounging areas and ample food & water. You'll note none of that is shown.

They all support this place, all are themselves very active in rescue work. Do you think for a second loving cats as they do, that they'd wink at this sort of thing? The camera-toting source here says they have "emotional attachments" which are at work . Yes, to animals... not to an institution.

The photos don't lie. A legitimate sanctuary would not allow these horrible conditions to continue for one minute. 10th Life has too many cats, and too few resources, to care for them properly. They need to stop accepting new cats and bring in a veterinarian to treat those animals who are suffering.

It is very sad this place has been misrepresented in this way. Many cats are dumped on them in the worst shape imaginable. I foster, adopt and TNR feral cats and am a feral feeder like the owner of 10th life was before he opened the sanctuary. I agree the place is a bit run down, but the cats are cared for and this video has been embellished. You should donate your time and money to help instead of posting videos that are untrue!!

I am a rescue volunteer and have been to 10th Life. I was welcomed as a visitor and given a tour of the entire property. The screen enclosure areas are all outside and get full ventilation and sunlight. There is also an enclosed area with many cat doors for them to roam in and out as they wish. I never saw the filth as portrayed in these photos. If the creator of this video says people are not allowed in and volunteers are unwelcome, how did they manage this footage?

I have been there twice in the last 6 weeks, once unannounced. There are dozens and dozens of cats and I was very impressed with how clean it is. I do fostering myself and every morning I dread going into the "cattery" because i have to clean up messes on the floor and such. There is NO SMELL at 10th life! Hah!

There are many FIV/FeLV cats there so seeing sick cats is expected simply because they are infected with a chronic and deadly virus. I have sanctuaried cats with FIV and when full blown, there isnt anything to do. Had someone come to my home when they were on downslides and took pics but did not state they were FIV, I could have been accused of neglect. The truth is all got support care, special kitty soup several times/day and lots of love until they crossed the Bridge. Pics cant show that.

Spay and Neuter your pets and this won't happen. Simple as that! If you don't like that idea then support the people that are trying to do the right thing. Volunteer at your local shelter or give donations so they can get better care for them. I am not going to judge them from the photos because kennels can become very dirty overnight (personal experience from volunteering). Make a difference and take control. Help you local shelters.

Amen. I've done rescue work for nearly a decade. We get kitties from dumpsters, half starved, sick. I could collect a bunch of pics just like those in this video in the course of a couple of months and put them together out of context making out rescue group look terrible if I wanted to, but it'd be just as much of a lie. We rescue and find homes for 7-900 cats and kittens a year in Central Florida and we have worked with 10th life. Rescue work is not pretty and they do the best they can.

You know I don't care where this is, it doesn't matter - but I will say that whomever is responsible for the 'care' of these cats needs to be SHUT DOWN and the cats removed to a place where they will get proper care/treatment and that includes the living condition. There is NO EXCUSE for what I see here other than neglect. The smell just walking through must be horrific, can't imagine what it is like for them to be forced to live in it ! Yeah, shut it down. Why have a place that takes in terminally ill cats no one else wants, runs clinical trials on drugs that could CURE FIV and FLV. Why have a place that takes in the cats no one else will, thanks to irresponsible pet owners. How about being part of the solution, instead of the problem? Put some effort into finding money and volunteers to help 10th life instead of shut it down. I've been there...have you? I know what they really do there, do you? Try doing some cat rescue work.

If your comment is to me, yes... I've done rescue work for over 8 years now. And I've been to 10th life several times. its never pretty, but they do good work there. Although I do agree that many of the cats they take in should be euthanized, there are alot that get to live and can even help find cures for feline aids and other diseases. If your comment was for cvfa, I'd be willing to bet you are right about the rescue work. ;)

BIAS!! I stopped in the middle because two of the "sick" cats shown are in the infirmary! If they are in a carrier they are in isolated care. Has the person filming ever taken care of ferals in an enclosure? They don't always use the pan. The picture of fecal matter and urine on the floor did not include the other side of the room where the pans are located. The cat with the fur missing likely has a flea allergy. So who can just walk up to a feral and give flea meds?

The "carriers" in question are big enough to hold a large German Shepherd. They have litter boxes, a box to sleep in and food/water, shelter from the elements. more than the cat would have if it were left outside to fend for itself.

Well, I say Brits rock! Yes, russ, some of the conditions in the pics are filthy and were most likely taken out of context and before any volunteers had cleaned. I've been to 10th life several times, to pick up feral kittens and drop off FIV/FIP + kitties. The majority of the cats are terminally ill, feral or both. Litter box habits are lacking all around. Considering the place runs on donations and volunteers, they do the best they can. Its a losing uphill battle, but they fight it anyways.
