Thatcher was the Prime Minister all throughout the 80s and she, along with Reagan (President of the US at the time) ended unions, privatized the economy, stopped many government benefits, and ultimately screwed up everything (in my opinion). Even though she was prime minister over 20 years ago, her actions have had a huge influence on politics.

Admittantly maybe the joke was an easy one, as Fry said even a 'child' could knock Mrs Thatcher, and in fact any politician. I do think Fry and Laurie had edge when they wanted to, despite their nostaligc turn of comic phrase.Thatcher had some consideration towards the 'aspiring working class' benefits in fact rose proportionally during her tenure. The 'big society' just seems like a privilaged middle finger raised against the poor. A 'we can't be bothered to help so help yourselves' ethos.
