Hey Mr. Uncool you really see color when you here this band. I'm as black as they come and was listening to Joe Zawinul when he and Shorter were with Cannon Ball playing Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. Believe it or not, this drum beat is almost exactly the same as one done by Frank Beard of ZZtop, on the Tejas album. Just to show you how good Beard is, not all popular music sucks, great vid thanks.
Weather Report is an almost endless source of great music, weather you research the earlier careers of all who past thru the line up or follow the careers to wherever they lead.
When I first heard Weather Report, I Loved them! WOW!! Saw them play just once! Jaco, was my Man, he got to playing the Bass! I even have a Fretless Bass. A shame that Jaco is not longer with us and Weather Report is also gone! Sniff, sniff! ;^(
This might be the same video that's on the DVD that I think you can only get if you buy the Weather Report box set called "Forecast:Tomorrow". The one you see here looks like it's taped via VHS from a broadcast- the DVD from the box set is much much better! Nice that this is posted anyway.
PE, is one of the most respected of all drummers. I love his brush playing the most. Met him in London once and he was taking time to talk to everyone after the gig. A serious man, but one who wants to educate others and pass it all on. Brilliant !
@sho321 agree with you up until the iTunes thing. iTunes music? really? I listen to Weather Report using iTunes. Don't mean to be a troll but . . . well maybe I am.
Hahaha now it all makes sense! I watch The Mighty Boosh and I was wondering what this "weather report" they keep mentioning was! LOL the keyboard player looks like Howard Moon from the Boosh.
@frankovich213 if you wanna dig some more real good music tune in to the other people Howard mentions. In one episode Howard mentions Charles Mingus. Check him.
Great Band, wonderful music, Ya got to admire the youtube phenom cause I have seen these men perform back in the day, but to see them now is quite a joy!
I saw Jaco with Weather Report in the late 70s. He was wearing orange and red silk pajamas, I think it was an orange shirt and red pants, and they didn't go together well. He did a long solo during which he beat his bass with his guitar strap.
To the dude posting about Staind & Knickleback: They never would have stood a chance in the 70's. AN AVERAGE 70's bands' talent could bury Knickleback & Staind. They got signed now because sadly, producers are less imaginative these days, and don't know music...much.
anyway, alternative rock wouldn't have flown in the 70's - nobody was interested in being brought down. Anyway, every new musical movement eventually reaches a Baroque period, where the same ideas and sounds are being endlessly revisited, but with more and more embellishments - all variations on similar themes - Nickleback is just a polished alternative-style band - can't expect too much from them, but what they do
Weather Report is better than Nickelback and Staind! Ok.
Have the members of Nickelback and Staind actually STUDIED music theory? Honestly, I am not sure. Which is why I am asking this music expert jbjindra here.
If you had mentioned bands such as Queen or Phish in analyzing the musicianship of Weather Report, you may have created a better argument. But, to suggest Nickelback and Staind are better than Weather Report? I feel sorry for you.
I don't know I guess the instrumentation isn't bad. It kind of seems all over the place and confused though. I tend to like more of the fresh stuff on the radio nowadays. Nickelback and Staind are two faves. If these guys just got off the drugs they could probably sound tight and rock like that too. A guy at work is trying to turn me onto this kind of messy jazz shit.
@jbjindra. idiot. i actually feel a bit sorry for you because you have a pile of dog dirt instead of a brain. feel free to insult me back, however you must realise you have no argument. look at the other comments: who in the name of Christ is going to remember 'Nickleback' in more than 30 years, you twat?
Pastorius walks around onstage because he can, a bassist isn't tied down to a drum kit or keyboard or microphone - if he shambles a little, it's because he's concentrating on the music - as for his appearance, well, obviously he likes loose fitting clothes with few constraints - plus he had undiagnosed bipolar disorder, cut the guy a break, he was a superlative jazz bassist
Actually Jaco shuffled on stage and made moves like James Brown intentionally as part of the show. The roadies sprayed baby powder on stage (believe it or not) to allow him to slide / glide easily. I am sure Jaco copied this routine from Wayne Cochran, as he played on his band for almost a year.
Ha, OK, I would have chalked it up to artistic license - didn't realize it was intentional - guess it gave him more soul, in the eyes of the audience - as the Beatles were told in Hamburg, "mach show!"
@jbjindra messy? your a fucking idiot and you dont know shit about music. i hope you listen to nickelback and staind forever, and i wouldnt wish that on anyone.
This isn't messy at all. It's very highly organized and tightly controlled. Z's writing style leaves the sound very open, so the solos can stand out. Listen again- you'll hear that ALL the guys know exactly where each other is, and where they are in the tune's form.
This is VERY sophisticated stuff, played extremely well.
By the way, if you wanna hear some tight shit, listen to WR's Teen Town. It will make Nickleback sound like diarreah.
@jbjindra ... I hope you're just a troll out from under the bridge to stir shit. Otherwise I seriously worry about you and your future prospects. These guys are absolute masters of music. Masters beyond words. Zawinul and Shorter have played with some of the biggest names in jazz before Weather Report was even thought of. And Jaco... I can't even put that into words. Listen to Charlie Parker, get a clue, then come back.
Did no one notice Zawinul playing the lead on the reversed Arp keyboard? Keyboard maps high to low/left to right not low to high. Amazing guy. Amazing.
I remember reading an article that talked about Zawinul's middle keyboard having a voltage inverter installed in it so, after determining a keynote midpoint, the key setup would be totally backwards. That meant as he would play up to the right of the keyboard the pitch would go in the opposite, downward, direction. He could turn that feature on or off as seen in Black Market intro and melody then his solo is a "normal" keyboard. He just dug it!!!
I don't care if you're thin, fat, conservative, liberal, drink, smoke cigarettes or pot: The only drummer W.R. brought to Offenbach in September 1978 was Peter Erskine!!! I'm not saying he was the definitive drummer for the band; but in my opinion no one was better than him. I thought he came on with a fantastic energy right out of the chute. Can't really think of a drummer I think is superior to Erskine.....
@carlosbassos .... its hard to tell if it is Peter or Alex .... but one thing , Peter almost never used and still does not use matched grip ... Alex always uses matched grip ... the guy in this video uses matched the whole way through
both Zawinul as Pastorius (as many others in this great band) smoked. It enhances fantasy and creativity and has never killed one single man. Marihuana!
Im a huge metal fan and 5 string player , but ILOVE THIS BAND! the whole band is jus soooo goood jaco is the best man ftw!

To say that WP was ahead of their time is to say the Sun is a very warm place.

both Zawinul as Pastorius (as many others in this great band) smoked. It enhances fantasy and creativity and has never killed one single man. Marihuana!
