  • I just can't believe how Akuna caught Shorter's phrase at 5:04. WR is the band!

  • @Happyascanbe1 U'r right,friend,and at 5'09...UUUUHHH!

  • @Happyascanbe1 ...It's not Acuna but Peter Erskine on drums,I think....But I saw the "Heavy Weather" Team in France,1976... Acuna is Terrific!

  • @MrHannibal31

Oops. You are right. It seems that was Erskine indeed and not Acuna. Thanks for that! :-)

  • Aw yeah, Peter Erskine all the way!!!!

  • The ulitmate artistes at work - what an honour to see them at their trade. Timeless

  • Weather Report is an almost endless source of great music, weather you research the earlier careers of all who past thru the line up or follow the careers to wherever they lead.

  • don't you just hate fake music? you know the illusionary stuff that makes you think you're listening to real music....

  • When I first heard Weather Report, I Loved them! WOW!! Saw them play just once! Jaco, was my Man, he got to playing the Bass! I even have a Fretless Bass. A shame that Jaco is not longer with us and Weather Report is also gone! Sniff, sniff! ;^(

  • at the end of black market, wayne sounds like sonny rollins on st. thomas or something. sick vid.

  • One of the best musical performances I've ever seen

  • Thank you Foehammer, This is so beautiful music for my body & soul. Ricardo, from Argentina

  • I wanna know what these guys ate for breakfast

  • Sublime - many thanks for sharing. Does it get much better?

Sadly my one chance to see them went astray when Crystal Palace burned down in 1981, so this is the nearest I get to Weather Report of that era,

  • Good stuff

  • Saw these guys in Dayton, Ohio in 1977. Jaco played a solo that brought the house down. God they were great!

  • Such a beautiful and creative music!... All we can do is leave all prejudices behind and try to follow the Mysterious Traveller.

  • Seriously wish I can have a beer with all the folk who dig this.....

  • playing this at Ronnie Scott's tomorrow with my band

  • @Jackiedoo23 >> Good luck, bro :)

  • nice work from Shorter and Jaco of course, well they are all fn great

  • This might be the same video that's on the DVD that I think you can only get if you buy the Weather Report box set called "Forecast:Tomorrow". The one you see here looks like it's taped via VHS from a broadcast- the DVD from the box set is much much better! Nice that this is posted anyway.

  • Chest-high trousers FOREVER! RIP LEGEND!

  • Now THIS is a fucking band.

  • Do you maen good or bad?

  • @TheGhostofsparta007

there is no such thing as bad concerning weather report.

  • @shot2shit literally, its a fucking band. its a band that fucks people, and a band worth fucking...

  • @shot2shit MA QUANDO RIAVREMO UNA BAND COSI'?!

  • @Piero2374 solo nei sogni

  • There was the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return To Forever, Holdsworth & Bruford and Weather Report.

The latter still amazes me most.

Especially Jaco and his chest-high trousers.

Best musician I have ever seen.

  • Cudos to Peter Erskine.

  • "Zawinul is the cat! He can play all that stuff."

    The bassist

  • I love these guys! Thank you for this music--Peace!

  • Yes, Zawinul always programmed the keyboard backwards when playing Black Market. What a genius. One of the best bands on the planet ever!

  • Uhmmm... Is Zawinul playing that middle keyboard backwards???

  • @lukagerm

    That's correct.

That ARP synth has an inverted key function.

  • PE, is one of the most respected of all drummers. I love his brush playing the most. Met him in London once and he was taking time to talk to everyone after the gig. A serious man, but one who wants to educate others and pass it all on. Brilliant !

  • steve kills man....

  • whos the guy on bass ??........l..o l

  • @MARDIUNO

The one and only, Jaco Pastorius

  • @MARDIUNO 8D LAWL! Gee, um, wait -- it'll come to me...

  • Glorious Pastorius. He leaved us too soon. Great lost!

  • 36 ppl dont like this... i cant understand y!!

  • I saw them at Osaka, Japan when I was a high school kid. The sound of WP echoed in my brain since then.

We need the REAL MUSIC now (not like MTV anymore!!).

Like we listen when we are in NOLA or CUBA or HAWAII.

    No more iTune music!!!

  • @sho321 what does no more iTune music mean?

  • @sho321 But Weather Report is on iTunes... lololol

  • @sho321 AMEN!!!

  • @sho321 agree with you up until the iTunes thing. iTunes music? really? I listen to Weather Report using iTunes. Don't mean to be a troll but . . . well maybe I am.

  • @sho321 i agree..and besides, analog is always much better..

  • Peter Erskine! What a drummer! Unbelievable!

  • Unglaublich.Ein Waaaahnsinn

  • my dad saw these guys play live when he was in college and he said jaco was just about the coolest bass player he'd ever seen.

  • Hahaha now it all makes sense! I watch The Mighty Boosh and I was wondering what this "weather report" they keep mentioning was! LOL the keyboard player looks like Howard Moon from the Boosh.

  • @frankovich213 if you wanna dig some more real good music tune in to the other people Howard mentions. In one episode Howard mentions Charles Mingus. Check him.

  • @frankovich213 Yeah I think "trying to look like Zawinul" was the look Julian Barratt was going for.

  • Wow! What a great band! Jaco drives the hell out of this. Zawinul, Shorter, man I am speechless.

  • How is this video so long??? I thought 10 mins was the limit on youtube videos.

  • lucky people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

  • Shorter lives!

  • Austrian niggers sound very white.

  • Great Band, wonderful music, Ya got to admire the youtube phenom cause I have seen these men perform back in the day, but to see them now is quite a joy!

  • ahh hee hee hee !!

  • THANKS FOR POSTING!!!! AMAZING!!!! WOW!!!

  • Peter erskine's work with weather report is pure genius, ya'll betta recognize dat sheehot

  • Lovely!!

  • I love the Shawn lane version of Black market

  • I saw Jaco with Weather Report in the late 70s. He was wearing orange and red silk pajamas, I think it was an orange shirt and red pants, and they didn't go together well. He did a long solo during which he beat his bass with his guitar strap.

  • @Scarbo09 jumpsuit is the word your looking for, not pajamas =)

  • great song, notice the way hes playing the keyboard the rong way round SoMeHoW

  • such strange and lovely keyboard sounds - chiming electric piano, plaintive synth like a soprano sax - Zawinul was one of a kind

  • ich war dabei ........dabeisein ist alles

  • these are some of the baddest cats to ever played together (music the is)way way ahead of there time waaaay ahead ! ! ! ! ! !

  • To the dude posting about Staind & Knickleback: They never would have stood a chance in the 70's. AN AVERAGE 70's bands' talent could bury Knickleback & Staind. They got signed now because sadly, producers are less imaginative these days, and don't know music...much.

  • @BonHagar

anyway, alternative rock wouldn't have flown in the 70's - nobody was interested in being brought down. Anyway, every new musical movement eventually reaches a Baroque period, where the same ideas and sounds are being endlessly revisited, but with more and more embellishments - all variations on similar themes - Nickleback is just a polished alternative-style band - can't expect too much from them, but what they do

  • Weather Report is better than Nickelback and Staind! Ok.

Have the members of Nickelback and Staind actually STUDIED music theory? Honestly, I am not sure. Which is why I am asking this music expert jbjindra here.

If you had mentioned bands such as Queen or Phish in analyzing the musicianship of Weather Report, you may have created a better argument. But, to suggest Nickelback and Staind are better than Weather Report? I feel sorry for you.

  • yeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • THE GREATEST BAND EVER

  • I don't know I guess the instrumentation isn't bad. It kind of seems all over the place and confused though. I tend to like more of the fresh stuff on the radio nowadays. Nickelback and Staind are two faves. If these guys just got off the drugs they could probably sound tight and rock like that too. A guy at work is trying to turn me onto this kind of messy jazz shit.

  • @jbjindra. idiot. i actually feel a bit sorry for you because you have a pile of dog dirt instead of a brain. feel free to insult me back, however you must realise you have no argument. look at the other comments: who in the name of Christ is going to remember 'Nickleback' in more than 30 years, you twat?

  • @jbjindra i just read your post again. sorry but you're a fucking moron X

  • @jbjindra

Does anyone else think this guy is an idiot?

  • @n8galicia jaco???

  • @alago85

    no jbjindra

  • @n8galicia Yep, a total buffoon.

  • @mfish618

Pastorius walks around onstage because he can, a bassist isn't tied down to a drum kit or keyboard or microphone - if he shambles a little, it's because he's concentrating on the music - as for his appearance, well, obviously he likes loose fitting clothes with few constraints - plus he had undiagnosed bipolar disorder, cut the guy a break, he was a superlative jazz bassist

  • @SupernalOne LOL, no. Pastorius isn't a buffoon at all. It was directed at a moronic comment by another.

  • @mfish618

Yes of course, drop-dead sarcasm - I stand corrected :)

  • @SupernalOne

Actually Jaco shuffled on stage and made moves like James Brown intentionally as part of the show. The roadies sprayed baby powder on stage (believe it or not) to allow him to slide / glide easily. I am sure Jaco copied this routine from Wayne Cochran, as he played on his band for almost a year.

  • @wysiwyg248

Ha, OK, I would have chalked it up to artistic license - didn't realize it was intentional - guess it gave him more soul, in the eyes of the audience - as the Beatles were told in Hamburg, "mach show!"

  • @jbjindra yeah Wayne Shorter was obviously too drugged up all the time to become one of the most prolific composers of the 20th Century....

  • @jbjindra If these guys would have just sold out maybe they could have had that homogenized and cliche sound that Nickelback and Staind both have.

  • @jbjindra messy? your a fucking idiot and you dont know shit about music. i hope you listen to nickelback and staind forever, and i wouldnt wish that on anyone.

  • @jbjindra WTF? I'm certain you're just kidding......if not....LOL.

  • @jbjindra

This isn't messy at all. It's very highly organized and tightly controlled. Z's writing style leaves the sound very open, so the solos can stand out. Listen again- you'll hear that ALL the guys know exactly where each other is, and where they are in the tune's form.

This is VERY sophisticated stuff, played extremely well.

By the way, if you wanna hear some tight shit, listen to WR's Teen Town. It will make Nickleback sound like diarreah.

ps NOONE played bass like Jaco

  • @jbjindra ... I hope you're just a troll out from under the bridge to stir shit. Otherwise I seriously worry about you and your future prospects. These guys are absolute masters of music. Masters beyond words. Zawinul and Shorter have played with some of the biggest names in jazz before Weather Report was even thought of. And Jaco... I can't even put that into words. Listen to Charlie Parker, get a clue, then come back.

  • someone tell me.....is that peter erskine on drums?...

    thanx

  • @HEYBUDD i think at that period it was alex acuna on drums mate. as far s i recall, erskine came on board for 'night passage', in 1980.

  • This isn't Jojo's Bizarre Adventure!

  • Did no one notice Zawinul playing the lead on the reversed Arp keyboard? Keyboard maps high to low/left to right not low to high. Amazing guy. Amazing.

  • @judahprince Yes got it! ;-)

  • vry very difficult to be better unfucking believieble listen 2 jacko and thee rest

  • teatro tenda a bologna

    bellissimimamente inaspettatamente coinvolta!!

  • Just the right synergy of musical spirits coupled of course with virtuosic talent.

  • Me parecen unos verdaderos monstuos dentro de lo que es la Música en general, y del Jazz Experimental, en particular. Excelente!!! bandittorevell

  • I played jazz with peter erskine

  • Anyone noticed Joe playing left handed transposed keyboard?

  • yep. he liked to mix up tuning configs. read where he like the way it undid his "programming" ... or words to that effect. awesome

  • I remember reading an article that talked about Zawinul's middle keyboard having a voltage inverter installed in it so, after determining a keynote midpoint, the key setup would be totally backwards. That meant as he would play up to the right of the keyboard the pitch would go in the opposite, downward, direction. He could turn that feature on or off as seen in Black Market intro and melody then his solo is a "normal" keyboard. He just dug it!!!

  • I don't care if you're thin, fat, conservative, liberal, drink, smoke cigarettes or pot: The only drummer W.R. brought to Offenbach in September 1978 was Peter Erskine!!! I'm not saying he was the definitive drummer for the band; but in my opinion no one was better than him. I thought he came on with a fantastic energy right out of the chute. Can't really think of a drummer I think is superior to Erskine.....

  • It's hilarious watching Jaco shuffle around lol; everyone else has to stay in one spot

  • @homeslice1479 who's the bunny at 6:22? lol

  • who is this on drums ... alex acuna ?

  • Peter Erskine

  • nope thats alex

  • That's 100% Peter Erskine.

  • @carlosbassos .... its hard to tell if it is Peter or Alex .... but one thing , Peter almost never used and still does not use matched grip ... Alex always uses matched grip ... the guy in this video uses matched the whole way through

  • this is peter 100% like calros says, if you don't believe why not look there configuration up for this concert..

  • ahh. just what i needed.

  • scarlet woman @ 13:30 or so... don't miss it. Jaco was so smooth back then...

  • To say that WP was ahead of their time is to say the Sun is a very warm place.

  • @snaedwiev WP?

  • @basvossen :-D

Sure! You've never heard of Weather Prerort (lol)

uh hum ... that's "WR" (thanks basvossen) I think I saw it in another post here, hope I didn't start some kind of self-propagating error.

  • @snaedwiev How wellthought and so it was

  • Sublime man just sublime

  • both Zawinul as Pastorius (as many others in this great band) smoked. It enhances fantasy and creativity and has never killed one single man. Marihuana!
