I have this card with an Arctic Cooler for 5870 (which goes for 4850) and still after 2 years it's a fucking bomb! Can MAX everything except crysis, but since i dont play it i couldn't care less. 4xxx series were and are an epic series
I didn't "iss" them I simply did not have enough heatsinks for both the ram and those voltage regulators BUT if you have as ggood of an airflow in your acase as I do (IE case temp is always below 23C) you don't need em since the air itself keeps them cool enough. plus my fans speed are the fastest speeds you can get on the market which means there is no static air in my case.
The after market fan comes with essentials only which means the gpu and the 8 ram. The others are optional. I have been using this setup for about 3 years now... I know that I have enough airflow where I don't need those.
hey i have a question! i bought a after market cooler and its going to be my first time changing the video card cooler and im wondering if i should put thermal paste/pads on every one of those chipsets on the card
No, if you really did buy an aftermarket vga cooler it should have came with the main heatsink as well as other smaller ones for the RAM on the card. If yours didn't come with any then you need to get a better heatsink.. maybe mine. but the real answer you are looking for is this: the ONLY place you need to put on some thermal paste IS the center of the GPU itself... That is the place where the main heatsink is going. The others already come with thermal paste in the adhesive in the bottom.
hey man nice vid! i was looking at a 4850 but unhappy about temps and was thinking of getting the 4850 = $200 + this cooler = $260 or i cud get GTS 250 = $220 which i read has pretty decent temps and probs wudn't need an aftermarket cooler. I hear their performance is the same. What do u suggest? please comment everyone.
Well thank you for the response. And the answer you seek all depends on the setup that you have. all mobos (motherboards) as well as chipsets come with preferred brands and graphics cards. Usually the mobos tell you what they support (either crossfire or sli) which ever one they prefer would probably be the better bet since it was made for/ in co-hoots with that specific brand in mind. that being said, I'd have to tell you to buy w/e the mother board recommends.
you don't need a diploma into that to understand it lol. here is it.

in conclusion. both the 4850 and 4870 base cooler both sucks. and for different reasons.
the 4850 sucks cause its a single plate.
(very bad, heat vs cool ratio)(you better sometimes with real small cooler that dont touch everything)
4870 sucks as well but not as much as the 4850. so leeson to learn is. that any cooler that are based on a single impact plate to supposdly dissapate heat.(they are scientificaly scams)
Hello i just wonder. I getting meny VPU recovery errors latley with my ATI 4850. It says "VPU recovery has reset you grafics accelerator" It can't be from the other computer components. This is my specs
AMD Phenom 9650 oc ~ 2.6Ghz
790x DS4 mobo
2Gb Ram
800W power supply
ATI 4850 oc 670Mhz 1138Mhz
Good case with good cooling. Everything is cool no overheating... I just keep getting this enoying errors when i playing games surfing on the webb....
I feel like this question has been answered about 4 times now. YES, this is to make sure that the bond between your thermal paste and your card / heatsink will set for optimal cooling.
Your cooling is good for now, but if you are already getting thermal for your cpu, it doesn't hurt to add it to your GC. The cooler on your's is a lot better then the default that was on mine. That's because of the 1 slot designed fan that mine was.... HORRIBLE at cooling.
Well there's your first problem right there. Unfortunately, Arctic VGA coolers have been known to break down completely, if not function incorrectly. It seems that the metal they use for their heat pipes isn't the quality you need to get heat away from your GC. If I were you I'd probably use the heatsinks you have and just get the gv1000 that I have. You wont regret it :)
Wow, that's horrible. What case do you use, and That's to be expected from the default fans. Sometimes they get even up to 80C. That case might have horrible airflow. I have two 25cm fans on the side of my case which also helps with airflow. But my cards never get above 75F
As I have said numerous times in numerous comments: They do not need me to waste $20 on something that doesn't get over 75F. My case Gets very, very good airflow. So maybe that is helping, but I have never seen it get above that, so I don't see wasting $20 for more heatsinks. I have had these in for about 4 months while running fry cry 2 and crysis on ultra hgh settings everyday without overheating or any other GC problems.
Yes, I also used actric silver 5. It says for ANY thermal paste to wait 24 hours. This is so the thermal paste will bond correctly to both the RAM (that gets VERY VERY HOT) and for the GPU so that when it gets hot the thermal paste will be able to do it's job on the BEST terms.
slatthewaltt: Static shock depends on the clothing you wear, the carpet you are sitting on, and the climate / condition of the room. Not EVERY room is filled with statically charged particles. I believe you are too worried. These manufacturers go out of their way to make sure that it isn't that easy to statically shock their products.
Also, Wizzkid: the ones you need to make sure you heatsink are the ones that I showed you in the video. If you have extras then do those smaller ones.
MamoDad I explained that at the beginning of the tutorial. I explained that the heatsinks that came with the package and the thermal paste was ALREADY on the card. If I had put on everything it would be been much much longer than it would need to be. And since watching someone put on the same heatsink 9 times as well as put on thermal paste is about as fascinating as watching paint dry I decided to quicken the video and my upload time.
Foxxaw, I will gladly tell you my temperatures but you must also realize that your temp of your GPU also has to deal with the airflow in your case. Recently I moved my tower from my basement to the highest point in my house. Now my idling has gone up from 30 to 34-35C on idle. Under load it hovers around 37-40C. If your temps are still up at around 56C then I would try a different thermal paste or maybe getting a better case / more fans in your case for airflow.
You seem to not know about how thermal paste works. It doesn't simply adhere to something it bonds to it. I also don't get what ypou are talking about with nitrogen, but if youn are using that to set the paste faster then you are dead wrong. It's not coolness that sets the thermal paste; that will just make it crack faster :\ it needs to bond at room temperature. Even when just running video your graphics cards still gets hot from running. And this will cause fractures in the bond.
First off to answer your question about the 24 hours leave time: this is to make sure that the thermal compound (paste) adheres to the ram / gpu thoroughly otherwise your ram heatsinks will eventually fall off. Since you played right afterwards I would check the connection between your heatsinks and your ram since it probably has loosened. Also, I have not put any heatsinks on the vrm's because that part doesn't get hot enough to need heatsinks. My case is nice and cool no need for them.
eeeh, at 40.00 you say that you have to wait 24 ours. for what?? beacause ive also a 4850 and vf1000 cooler but i didnt wait 24 ours. i putted directly on the card and play games(btw my card now stays around 35 degrees0
The stock fan for the 4850 idles at 60 degrees C. That is terrible for just idling, and it reached up to 80c during load. This mean it has a HUGE tendency to over heat, especially when you are playing incredibly graphical games like Crysis. The fan just gets too hot period :P hope that helps.
The Simple answer is "Yes, this supports every make and model that has come out by both Nvidia & ATI. (So Far) The only one you have to worry about are the Nvidia 8800 series which you have to also buy a ram heatsink mount as well."
This cooler is made to work with every make and model of Nvidia and ATI graphics cards. Now if you are asking if you can use a default fan from the 3870 series on a 4850 card, I would assume not since they are both different sizes, have their ram in different spots, and have the screws that mount the fans in different positions. You should use this cooler, much less eneergy intensive and it cooler better than any default fan.
Yes I am sure. It has worked for over 3 months now like that while playing graphically intense games such as fry cry2 on very high settings as well as crysis on very high.
lol, I already have them for the ram, I don't need anything for those four blocks since they hardly ever even get hot. Them main things you need to protect are the ram and the gpu itself. I can feel those with my own hands and they arent hot at all. Plus I've been playing frycry 2 without a problem on ultra high.
I have already tested those thoroughly with temp guns and thermal devices. They are not running more than 60-70F if yours is your airflow must be super bad :( No need to spend more money on something that doesn't need it
really..? one of my friends bought a VF900 for his 4850 and he kept getting shutdowns when under load with furmark until he covered his VRMs with enzotech mosfet sinks.
yes it says this on the instructions. (although I couldn't wait THAT long and I did mine after about 18 hours)
This is a safety protocol that zalman uses to make sure that the thermal bond adhering the ram heatsinks and to the gpu have completely bonded. It says that "after 24 hours the bond between your ram heatsinks and your ram itself will have reached about 90%."
This is just a simple way of saying: "Make sure to give it enough time so it sticks better."
Thats really cool. After watching your video I felt alot more confident about changing my video cooler since I have never actually changed the stock fan on my video cards and just seeing u all do it gives me insight how its done correctly . The whole part about waiting 24 hours before use is your advice or part of the instructions?
yes they have I will be uploading the results in a few days. Let me just tell you right now though even without the video. It went from 65C to 35C under stress, and 30C idle :)
lol, actually, everything went as planned. There is no static if you do not create any :). I am going to be uploading the 3rd video of this install in a bit. Just need to get off of wireless first, keeps interrupting my uploads.

Erm... you might want to get some cooling on the VRM's. Otherwise, you're going to have to spend another decent chunk of money on new cards.

y wait 24hours for the paste?? wtf
djlegacy96 3 years ago
Thats because the bonding agent takes 24 hours in order to bond effectively.

yes it says this on the instructions.

So whats the results? Did you drop the temps? If so how much?

lol, actually, everything went as planned. There is no static if you do not create any :). I am going to be uploading the 3rd video of this install in a bit. Just need to get off of wireless first, keeps interrupting my uploads.
