From what I found in Wiki:

"In 1969 the "U2" class was renamed when the engine displacement limit was increased to 2.5 litres. Porsche 911s and Alfa Romeo GTVs were dominant, until 1971 when the BRE Datsuns entered the series and dominated through 1972, when Alfa Romeo and BMW quit the series because an inability to beat the BRE prepared Datsuns."

This a great example of a wonderful car...I have had two 510 Datsun 1600's. The best one I owned was the one I raced. It was not far off what the BRE Team built during the 1970's, but with a few modern updates. Most people who bag car manufacturers have little or no appreciation of what they achieve or are armchair racers. I welcome all manufacturers who prove their wears in motor racing..."it is putting your money where your mouth is so to speak"...

I'd prefer a BMW 2002TI, Ford Lotus Cortina, Ford Escort RS1600, or an Alfa Romeo GTV over a 510. I'm not really sure why. I think it's mainly because the 510 is an imitation of a BMW 1602.

I want to know how Morton landed that good lookon Blond. Thats not John Morton its Woody Allen. I always owned a Datsun then of course Nissan I can tell you now they never ran like that until about the late 80's now I would put the Z up against any Mustang, BMW, what ever. Great gas milage back when gas was less than a buck.

I will always remember when I was 16yrs old driving my 510 around Long Beach and always these nerdy looking old guys would try to get me to sell it to them. I never did and it was my only car for the next 16 years untill it was crashed by a girl. Don't let women drive Datsun's!

as son of datsun dealer and of a dad who raced a 510, and before that a roadster with bre stipes

this was the best movie ever. we all loved Bob Sharp, but we worshiped Peter Brock and BRE and John Morton.( my dads car was petty blue on top and # 34)

I grew up on datsuns. It was years later that i figured out the bmw's and alfa's where better cars. In real life. But the 510 was almost born to run. Like his big brother the Z car. i miss the real Datsun... long live nissan eh?

I first saw this as a 16mm film about 1981 when our 510 club borrowed it from Nissan. During the 80s, I got permission from Nissan to make VHS copies for 510 owners.
