The front of the casket is folded downward. it was obviously intended to be a completely opened casket.which would be by family requests.

Some of the black funerals I've attended in the mainland years ago seem so barbaric, people screaming and falling out, often times those that kick up the most dust at funerals are those with the most guilt because of unresolved issues and grief for not doing more when it was in their power to do so while the deceased was living. I'm not making light of loss and grief because our family went through multiple tragedies but never once did we carry on in public and we're black.

I have no problem sleeping after funerals, here in the islands I've been to funerals at night and gone back home and went to bed no problem and I live alone. However at my parents request we had no viewing at all during the memorial at church it was all done at the funeral home. My parents didn't want to be remembered that way. By the way they were God fearing people as I am. Me, I will have no viewing absolutely and will be cremated on my demise my siblings feel the same way.

I can tell this is a old picture you do not see many caskets like this now a days you can best to believe for the year of the funeral this casket was fancy and it cost more extra money for it to open up and be able to view the body fully clothed ,at a time funeral homes carried fancy caskets for people that wanted to spend that kind of money there is no telling what one would cost if you wanted one for someone in 2011

This is the old style oval coffin, it was made from weaving wooden strips, the pillow is removed, and the lid closed. The front is where is head is, this coffin is too small, but this might have been a tall guy.

the church puts a limit on the years of mourning as a sign of morning we put up the black and purple flags to show the sign of mourning but after 6 months of mourning bcuz if you mourn for the rest of your life what good does that do? that doesnt mean you can personally reminisce or cry every now and then but the church itself comes out of it.
