Alike you, IcedBudweiser, I saw this race too. Arie was the sub for Zanardi. Arie Luyendyk drove for Chip Ganassi before in 1993 (I'm not accurate with history and watching Champcar4ever's vids).
Here in the Video there is nothing Arie could do. Meier spun around and caught the fish (Arie Luyendyk). Reaction isn't that much important once this happened to him in less than a second. BRAM!
and i also believe this was his only cart start in 97. he was running the irl at the time and never raced in cart again.

Nice Job CART Safety Team! Those guys were the best in the business! You can see them cleaning up the debris.... and drivers at the end.

I was sitting in turn 4 and we felt the impact, it was a big hit! To be honest, if Luyendyk didn't his Meier; he (Meier) would have hit head on...
Anrd Meier is currently racing a BMW in the VLN series, run exclusively on the old Nurburgring BTW.

This is a crash that could have gone so much worse. Kudos to Luyendyk for putting his thumb up when he was on the stretcher, signalling "I'm OK".
