I have a feeling the traction control wasn't turned off on the Explorer, as the wheels weren't even spinning while the gas was "floored". The traction control was probably cutting power in order to keep the wheels from spinning. Turn the traction control off and it probably would have made it up the hill with less trouble than the Venza.
i heard this rx8 in person at the round 3 FD comp at wall nj. it was nasty. period. theres no other way to describe the sound other than: an incredably loud and ear wretching combination of a squeezed out death fart from god, ripping paper from the hands of chuck norris, and an indy car from fricken hell. it almost hurt to listen to it. genius who ever designed the 4 rotor wenkel.
was just getting into this channel then they asked me for money to watch a video. F that and FU Driving Sports. Lost a potential, like you care anyways.
"this is one car you have to hear to believe".. well i wont ever see it live so let me hear it! ill believe you i promise! all you give me is a little tease, cruel
I noticed that Explorer was a sport model with the 22" wheels, which I know come with more on road performance oriented tires. Did the Explorer stop because of loss of traction or did it not have enough power? I would think the cheaper non-sport models with more off road oriented tires would perform better.
@typhoon5000 I agree, there is a way to equip the Explorer better. It was must have had open diffs, because it ended up spinning a single wheel in the sand (just like my old '94 impreza used to do when it was stuck in the snow). Anyhow know the AWD system used in the Explorer? I tried to look up tech docs on it and didn't have any luck. (Mfgs need to be better about disclosing this info on their press sites.)
@drivingsports I agree that Mfgs def need to be more open about tech specs and suppliers of their components. I tried to find some info on the Explorer's AWD system and all I could find was that the sport model comes with AWD and the all other Explorer models have optional 4WD systems that allow you to select 4WD High and Low gears, where the AWD is fully auto. It wouldn't surprise me if both diffs were open, but I would hope an LSD rear is optional, especially if you have a low gear to use.
@drivingsports Part of me wants to ask how aggressively these cars were driven up this hill; a heavy right foot can make all the difference. I submit all the times my crazy Maine-Raised Mom made our STEEP driveway in the snow-covered ice of Massachusetts, foot on the floor the whole way up.
why not a range rover?

@drivingsports Also, nice job working that Venza up the hill. I would have never thought it would ever make it.
typhoon5000 1 year ago
@drivingsports I looked a little harder and found that the Explorer uses the an 8.8" open rear diff with either 3.55 or 3.73 gears :(
typhoon5000 1 year ago
@typhoon5000 Well, that certainly 'splains that.
