tell you ANYTHING to get you to send them into space, even

if the rest of us die doing it. The fact is that we don't have enough

energy to send a sufficient number of people to the moon to do

anything. Your grandchildren won't be able to even ride on an airliner

because of global warming/peak oil, and for the next century or

more nobody is going to be interested in space travel, they'll be too

busy figuring out how to eat and stay warm.

@m2o0o1n2 The idea is utilizing the moons resources to save the Earth. Helium-3 is a necessary component for fusion reactions to take place, and to continue using MRI scanners. Helium-3 is dispersed across the moon's surface in large quantities, unlike on Earth. Plus, eventually this won't be done by NASA but by private corporations so they won't be wasting any of your tax payer money.

@m2o0o1n2 In that movie the Moon's orbit is skewed by using nuclear explosives to excavate caves for the colonies. In fact, there's not enough energy in all the nukes ever built to put more than a very teeny-weeny, itty-bitty, insignificant dent in the Moon's motion. The Moon is extremely massive.

Wind is easy.

The US government used to have enough money to buy a small personal windmill for everyone on the planet. There's still enough to give personal windmills to a chunk of our population, saving billions in electricity bills for millions.

Mars with earthlike atmosphere and conditions... why? Even a Mars that is perfectly livable is still smaller than Earth, but all those asteroids, now with those you can construct O'Neill habitats having a total living space a few thousand times that of Earth.
