Any Nader critics actually read Uncle Tom's Cabin? I remember with horror the part where Tom's wife asks "why aren't you angry?" when their family was split up as inheritance after their master died. Tom quoted a passage of the Bible about slaves obeying their masters without question. How hideous! Without anger over the injustices of slavery how could it have ended? Uncle Tom was morally a good man but represented an insidious obeisance to the establishment. Obama has also accomodated power.
Our leaders are not leading. They need to put their feet in the shoes of working Americans…. Instead, all they think about is re-election and implementing United Nations Agenda 21 and ICELI. If you don't know what UN Agenda 21 and ICELI are, then LEARN before you vote! It's why Obama did nothing to help US people--Obama wants WORLD redistribution of wealth.
The politicians tell backs to stick together with immigrants. Why? For the politicians' votes into one pool. Same reason politicians tell blacks the Republicans hate them = votes. Before you post, search YouTube for the following video about poverty/immigration entitled:
Immigration by the Numbers -- Off the Charts
it's short and easy to understand. Then tell me if open borders are good for blacks (or anyone in America).
Ralph Nader... what a has been......lol OH he does not like FOX NEWS......guess you don't like the truth... I would ask what a jerk you are.. Bush did great things for our country. FOX NEWS tels the truth... LIBERALS DON"T LOL
Yeah, buddy. It's so funny how people bought into Shep's charade. It probably didn't have to with the fact that there was a black analyst sitting across from him.
Check out and spread the You Tube video below to anyone who ignores Nader's points yet again (and I'm not talking about the other things he was saying)
It is titled:
Shocking Video Unearthed Democrats in their own words Covering up the Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac Scam that caused our Economic Crisis
I hate FOX news and all. I don't really care about their standpoint on anything. I was offended by the "Uncle Tom" remark and his unwillingness to rephrase in a way that didn't focus on Obama's race. It's not a matter of who would be the better president or anyones political history or future. It's about the comfort in laboring a racist remark ESPECIALLY if you're establishing yourself as virtuous and competent. Terrific/informative video. Beside the point.
On the money. I follow Nader and I supported him all through the campagin. It is very refreshing to here someone other than my family. Thanks for the breath of fresh air.
THIS GUY IS ACCURATE, AS IS RALPH NADER. Ralph Nader is an authentic hero who has done SO MUCH to help the American public, yet most of the public seems to be ignorant of this......
Worried about the wrong stuff-that is the main problem! Pay attention to the real deal people! You latch on to one word and run like Hell. If you listen, instead of rattling, - you just might learn something!!
You couldn't have said it better. Almost everything Nader says is vitally true for the country. He just says it in ways that make it too difficult for idiotic Americans to comprehend it. People listen to what he says in the interview, hear the words "uncle Tom", and act like he didn't say anything before and after that. Turns out he never called Obama an Uncle Tom. One day he might have to though.
right on! good job speaking truth. i don't understand how people took this out of context....nader explains more about it on another video (search university of buffalo nader). thanks for the vid post. you rock! =)
I think Nader's comments were offensive because he tied race to his criticism of Obama when it wasn't necessary to make his point. Nader does have some good ideas on his website on how he'd run the country but to build a signficant third party it will take building a critical mass of public support. I'd also like to see his analysis on why he has not been able to build a critical mass beyond being shut out of mainstream media.
do you all meet in your basement and have an all nighter?
Nader's comment was chosen and used by him in anger and frustration towards the outcome of the election; so he knew exactly why he said it and the meaning. And you as many others defend this type of act as being just words, but they're not just words, they're evidence of how the true racist mentality is still alive and well inplanted.
Do you really think he expected to win the election? If so, you don't know Ralph. And you're ignoring his underlying point (despite his poor choice of words, as I have previously acknowledged), which has nothing to do with race: Will Obama be a president for the people and our Constitution, or just another special interest sellout? A perfectly appropriate question, especially considering his pro-war, anti-Fourth Amendment and anti-Bush accountability positions thus far, as the vid points out.
The comment was racist because Nader only used the highly offensive "uncle tom" comment because Obama is an african-american. When challenged on the phrase by Smith, Nader shifted and said that he was only questioning if Obama was going to be a "toadie for the corporations." Well Nader could have queried if Obama was going to be a "toadie" in the first instance and there was no need to use "racially charged" language. So why did Nader decide to use racially charged terms that took him off msg?!
He didn't go off message (which was the fact that Obama has a choice of whether or not he's going to be a sellout). He just used the racially charged language to illustrate it. I agree he didn't need to use "Uncle Tom" to make the point. But he did it to maximize exposure of his underlying message, which, again, has nothing to do with race.
Well I dont want to belabor the point but Nader certainly went off msg.He spent 2 mins fighting over what phrase would be appropriate rather than what specific policies Obama should stand tall on. And if what you are telling me is that americans in general (or even african-americans in particular) should ignore Nader's use of racially charged language because he's toiling unfairly under the obscurity of a 3rd party,I assure you tears are flowing down my cheek now. Please-its unacceptable period.
I never said it was acceptable, and I am most certainly not telling you or anyone else to ignore what Nader said. As I have repeatedly pointed out in comments here, it was a poor choice of words that he didn't need to make his point. What I'm saying is don't let the anger toward his language obscure the broader point, which has nothing at all to with Obama's race, but whether he will be a peoples' president or just another corporate puppet.
Well I am black and I'm sad to say that you and I live in different realities (even after Obama's historic win although I'm hopeful). When blacks hear racially charged language it tends to be all we hear and whatever message was intended gets lost. I don't have the luxury of life experience to simply "move beyond" Nader's poor choice of words and I was "formerly" a big fan. Nader could have pushed his agenda by running for congress but his ego won't permit that and I now offically wash my hands.
Sorry you see it that way. I understand how the broader message can lost in the midst of justifiable anger and ultimately useless arguments, which is why I have repeatedly mentioned it here. A simple scroll up through my previous comments will illustrate my point. Nader has been pushing his agenda for 40-plus years and accomplished far more for this country than most people realize. His runs for the presidency have never been about simply winning, but expanding his body of work on our behalf.
@sergeantnorider your an idiot. obama has done nothing for the black community he is an uncle tom. your offended by words but not by the harm this sell out has caused. obama is a joke. he grew up in white upper middle class world. he was never oppressed.
So what did you do? Vote for an illegal alien. Yer incorrect. Very incorrect. Obama couldn't have won unless several million whites voted for him as well.
You are absolutely correct, sir. Thank you for posting this video. I have a lot of respect for Nader even though I'm a libertarian and do not agree w/ most of what he says. But, I couldn't care less what Nader calls Obama. Obama is a war hawk; that is a fact, and therefore he deserves respect from absolutely no one.
This country has a history of racism and you're saying to forget that? This campaign was FULL OF RACISM AND RACIST COMMENTS...if you don't agree with that, you weren't following this election. If he was asking him if he was going to be a GOOD politician or MORAL politician, why not use THOSE words? If you don't see how some people can take offense to the Uncle Tom comment, I guess you never will.
We should never forget the history. Nader could have made his point just as effectively using different words. I really think he was going for the shock value to get people talking, which we absolutely need more of. My guess he will come to regret using "Uncle Tom" if he doesn't already. He's a good man who has done an incredible amount of good for his country, which is far more than can be said for Shepard Smith or any of those other self-righteous chumps at the Fox Propaganda Channel.
The fact is while people argue over Red vs Blue, Black vs White, Nader vs McCain you fall prey to the subterfuge this government has designed just for your little ego's so they can move ahead with their global agenda - un-noticed by the koolaid drinking masses on either side fighting over non existent threats and issues. Quit taking sides, listen to what is being said, think critically and you'll see who the REAL enemy is and what you have to do to end it OR forever stay Appaulingly ignorant.
Nader was saying that Obama will be subservient to corporate interests (ie an uncle Tom)or he will serve the interests of average people and poor minorities (ie black and ethnic people). By the way, the term uncle Tom isn't racist. It just means a black person subservient to white authority shuch as a black person (Obama) serving the interests of rich white Americans and corpations. That fool on Fox news doesn't even understand what Nader was making.
I got to ask a question about americans and their politics. Aren't you guys Capitalist? isnt your system built on Capitalism? then why do you bitch and moan about large corporations and the rich elites ruling the country? Governtment By the people for the people isnt that what Marx wrote? Capitalism will collapse on it self and you are now seeing the contradictions of it with the economic collapse.
You pretty much answered your own question with that last sentence. The problem is not capitalism itself, but the ever-growing greed of capitalists, which leads to the corruption of politicians who are supposed to be working for us. Some blow the smoke and others hold the mirrors, while corrupt benefactors fill their campaign coffers. Like every fraud it will eventually collapse completely, perhaps taking our system of government with it. Unless enough people wake up and do something about it.
Yeah, that is the basis of SCOD. However Americans have a 'sports team' like passion for Capitalism "because thats the government we embarked on" and thats what we have. LOL Seriously its like someone telling a Dallas Cowboys fan to be a Redskins fan! They dont see the similarity, because they are not supposed to be fans of the other team. lol
How could anyone be outraged over the simple statement that Obama must choose whether or not he wants to stand up for the interests of the american people? Everyone knows that he must make that choice, as every politician must.
Now there's a stellar argument. The sheer complexity of it must have had you struggling for hours. But hey, thanks for the effort. You must be exhausted.
Okay, that's two posts with no backup for what you're saying. Care to go 3-for-3 and make yourself look even more ridiculous? How did you know immediately? Did Shepard Smith tell you? I'll admit the 1 percenters are a pretty exclusive club, but keep working at it! Maybe someday you'll have enough of a clue to join us. Of course the percentage will be much higher by then, and it won't take nearly as much nerve to do the right thing. Nice bonus for anonymous trolls like you.
Back up what up saying? Sure 99% percent did NOT vote for Nader. Make my self look more ridiculous? Well you are the one who is the idiot that supports Nader. So it is you who looks ridiculous. Join you, the percentage will be higher? Are you serious? Nader had a higher percentage 4 years ago. He is going in the wrong direction. He should have stuck to being a consumer advocate. He was good at that. He doesn't have what it takes to be president and looks like an idiot for trying.
99% of the people voting to maintain a hopelessly corrupt two party system (where the two parties have conspired for years to shut out independent voices) will never make it right. It just means that most people (yourself included, obviously) cannot summon up the spine to deal accordingly with the ugly truth, so they just vote to maintain the corruption and crawl into hiding for another 4 years. It's not necessarily about electing Nader. It's about fixing broken government. Do you get it yet?
You are a fool if you continue to believe that the current two party system exist for our benefit. The democrats and republicans have formed a Cartel to control this country, which is constitutionally illegal. If more people in obviously red or blue states voted for ANY third party candidate, then the electoral votes would go to the candidate of your choice, but our democracy would have a chance to grow. It is stagnating if you haven't noticed.
I never said that I believe the current two party system exists for our benefit. I believe that the current two party system is in fact flawed. What I said was that Ralph Nader is an idiot for what he was trying to do and anyone that supported him is also a stupid idiot.
Nader knows he will never have to listen to reason since he will never be more than a candidate. I question his acceptance of funding from the Bush camp. It might have been hypocritical of Ralph to run as a Democrat but he should not have run against the Democrat in a tight election when the Republican was so close to being a rogue fascist who would eliminate workers' rights and benefits all together. He also refused to drop out when he should have dropped out to ensure a better outcome.
So he should have just stood down and continue to let a worthless two party corporate controlled system serve itself at the expense of the people, our Constitution and our country's moral standing in the world? Where's the logic in that? We gave dems control of Congress two years ago to get us out of Iraq and hold Bushco accountable. They responded by continually voting to keep funding the illegal occupation and taking impeachment off the table. They're no better than the other party.
Ralph's runs for the presidency have always been far more about advancing reform than winning the election. Indeed, third party movements are responsible for some pretty big reforms in the history of this country. The abolition of slavery, the right of women to vote, child labor laws, etc. If it weren't for such efforts, there would never be any incentive for the two major parties to change. But so many these days are so caught up in the win/lose sports mentality they just don't get it.
I'd have more trust in and respect for Ralph Nader if he chose Kucinich's strategy of running as a Democrat and backing out when it may cause the Republican candidate to win. I totally trust Kucinich. I also recently heard Nader promote a carbon tax. Somehow, it's kinda like he gives to us with one hand and takes it away with the other. Something just doesn't quite smell right. I know Nader is far too intelligent to believe that his candidacy in the Green Party wouldn't do any possible harm
It would have been hypocritical of Ralph to run as a Democrat, given his long standing position that there is no difference between the two major parties. I don't like the idea of a carbon tax either, but I think it would have been much easier to get a "President Nader" (who actually ran as an Independent this time, not a Green) to listen to reason on that issue than it will be to get President Obama to listen to reason regarding a complete withdrawal from Iraq.
We will just have to agree to disagree I guess. I just think Nader's STRATEGY is suspicious. He could just as easily express his disapproval of the Dems/Repubs by doing what Kucinich did. He didn't have to run as a spoiler for the Dems and he was more critical of the Dems than the Repubs. Dems are more liberal. I agree with most of what Nader says, but it is mostly his MO I disagree with. In his MO he does as much harm as good. Kucinich has only done good for us, no bad. That's the difference.
thanks! it's so nice to see people like you speaking the truth when so many so called "progressives" including editor's of magazines by the same title, have been so dismissive and hostile towards Nader (and his supporters) who is the most humble, dedicated politician I can think of. I am very scared, already, there is a strong push to silence progressives and people that want peace to not criticize Obama, but we have to stop the war, we have to have social justice.
Right on, my friend. Any "progressive" who so easily dismisses Nader and/or the whole independent/third party movement is really just a partisan Democrat "dialing for the same dollars," as Ralph has often said. Don't let those phonies scare you. Just keep challenging them with the truth. There are plenty of REAL anti-war, pro-justice people out here, and we will not be silenced.
He still made a mistake... that should have never come out of his mouth. You don't ask a black man "Will you be an uncle tom?" under any circumstances. Would you ask any black man that question? I think not. He should have admitted he made a mistake when the anchor asked him.
When will the emotionally immature realize that words don't mean anything, unless you allow them to. It is akin to book burning to avoid using any word.
Nader is brilliant. Hasn't it crossed your mind that he can't apologize for making a mistake, because he choose the "Uncle Tom" phrase intentionally? He wanted to make us talk. Saying bad, good, moral, immoral are ineffective in the age of sound bites.
I have nothing personally against Nader... if he was going for just "shock" value, then mission accomplished. I just think if he was going for shock value, there had to be another way to do it. Just wrong words at the wrong time. I never said Nader is blatant racist and ban him forever as some of the replies seem to imply. We all make mistakes and say things sometimes that don't come out as intended. Don't you agree?
either one would have inherited a mess, there will just be more pressure on obama to clean it up, kinda ridiculous since some of the current sleaze (pelosi) is still gonna be around :o(
Of course there should b outrage 4 all of the things obama has done. but there should not b surprise. obama himself speaks about how flawed he believes our constitution to be. It is his clear misson to gut it as much as possible.
I agree Nader has done a lot of great things, but does anyone else think that his tone when he writes to Obama is unnecessarily rude? I think Nader loses a lot of support not because of the cause he fights for, but how he talks to people, like saying Obama's campaign has acted "cowardly." I wouldn't take someone seriously if they talked like that to me.
It's fair to say that Ralph can sometimes come across as abrasive (or "rude" if you prefer). I think it's mostly the result of 40-plus years of fighting corporate power and knowing what it takes to beat the bastards, which he has done many times. It takes a thick skin and and an uncompromising nature, which can be misinterpreted. I think those who so quickly dismiss him because of this without considering his massive body of work and the respect it commands are just looking for an easy reason.
DO BEWARE!! they (nwo) are going to try to divide the masses as they see a unity of the people. if obama DOES NOT do right by the people WE "again" must stand together for ourselves & our children
It is so relieving to see you and so many others are smart enough to realize that Nader was right to ask that of Obama. America needs to wake up and smell the smog already. People need to stop dismissing Ralph Nader as some egotistical nobody. We're dealing with the justice and welfare of our nation here. It's impressive that someone like Obama won, but can we really trust him based on his actions so far? That's all Nader was trying to say-- why can't people understand that?
I agree he was making a subtle point that Fox deliberately misinterpreted. More mind control trying to tell us how to think. It only proves that the media is only the PR outlet of the pentagon that comes in different flavors. It is the same crap.
McCain, and Obama, and The Establishment won. I cant wait until Barack doesn't do all the wonderful things that his supporters get glazed eyes from hearing. Jew Biden is the one running shit, just like Cheney. If Obama goes against all of the people that paid for his presidency he will get assassinated.
another great vlog jp. Oh yes, we are going to see 'change' with O...a more fast-paced track to total police state and the demise of our republic. That has been their plan all along.
research obama and you'll realize there was no hope to begin with as many of us who have half a brain voted 3rd party or didn't vote. Because the Council on Foreign Relations picks the president and that's painfully obvious today. McCain and Obama have tiny differences between them and either would continue America's rise to Fascism. All Nader needs to do is stick by the constitution and he will keep looking better and better, although aren't they all supposed to stick by it?
Excellent commentary, I watched the so called interview and can only say that Faux news is ether ignorant and stupid or is deliberately misleading or wanting to show that they have a real scoop for their ratings.
Faux news is finished as a news source that can be counted on as giving real news and is now a source of ridicule.
Ralph has suckered them into stupidity and proven that you have to use your mind now days when disseminating real news from the corporate media.
I can remember from back in the late 60's thru the 70's, when most of the big corporations had feared "Naders Raiders" for protecting consumers from products made by companies that were unsafe. General Motors was one of the many that also had feared Nader.
great message brother. too bad we won't see any beneficial changes, he will only make things crappier. if there was anywhere to go, i would leave. but the rest of the world is as bad or worse than the us.... :(
Barack is going to extend benefits to the peasants for unemployment benefits, and bail out the elites. RE Negotiate NAFTA. Barack never had the courage to impeach bush, His accommodating personality would not allow it, so Nader is right! Americans are hurting, 90 old lady shot herself do to the greed of corporate hitlers wanting to throw her out of her house, it's time to hold barack's feet to the fire!
it's already known that the corporations own Barack. that's common sense. his comment was to seek attention and was disgusting. Barack is the first American president and your loser of a candidate says what he said, and you're still defending him. lost all respect 4 u.
of course Obama is corporate owned. Obama did vote against the war, and that is a big start. jperryam and others make idealist decisions. thankfully Obama won by a landslide. wake up for your delusional dreams. we are living in an imperialistic country, and I like the fact that Obama's preacher brought up the injustices caused by the US.
witzkeyman. Obama voted for the $850 billion bail-out package. This already shows Corporate Hack (Uncle Tom) tendencies. The next 4 years will be interesting. Congratuations on your Obama victory. Like it or not, he's our President now.
Wow your argument is not only nihilistic and apathetic but if you only vote for the most popular candidate because you don't vote for "loser"s you deserve to have your future evaporated. The real losers are those who settle for less (and those who can't think for themselves) but sadly the Americans who try to stand up only get dragged down by people like you. PS I think it's a good time for you to put your life savings in the stock market.
there is a reality to the situation. if McCain would have won, you would have seen this country turn to crap. we can't always get what we want, but imagine if Gore were President the past 8 years.
Why do people still say "imagine if gore were president"? Who knows what would have happened? There's no way you can say for sure it would have been better. It's possible, but you can't say for sure. The past is the past, all we can do is learn from it and move on and make sure we don't make the same mistakes again.
Did you listen to this video, witzkeyman? Do you not understand the subtlties of the english language? Do you not understand that the underlying point Nader was making has nothing to do with race? We may have reached a milestone with the election of our first black president, but the value of that accomplishment is lost if he allows himself to be owned by the corporations. If you're okay with that, you have no business talking about common sense, and you have no idea what real respect is.
furthermore, nader has every right to be bitter because the stupidity and bias of news selection made sure we didn't EVEN SEE THE ENTIRE THIRD PARTY IN THE DEBATES, FOR GODS SAKE!
don't worry about it i heard it and i heard nader make the point to tell that fucking shill to shut up because's people's homes are in danger so faux is a bunch of boobs..yeah for obama, yes we have a gov gone wild
he's lebanese, and that's dumb, go re-read the transcript..faux is about as ridiculous as rush limbaugh, fox is going to attack anyone fighting for the freedom the information act, a fair minimum wage, workers rights..who do you think is fighting for you..obama hasn't done shit yet

I see another Ron Paul kool-aid drinker. I seen the whole video in context. Nader was being a ass. He just killed his career. For what, to get some shock value. Oooohhhhh.
wrong again on rp, also, fox is an ass all the time, people missed the fucking point when fox twisted it for spin points to blackball nader whose FIGHTING FOR THE POOR & WORKING CLASS NOT LYING ABOUT FISA
lorenzo8500, how's your Kool-Aid tasteing? That Obama Kool-Aid will taste very bitter come last of January/beginning of February. You Obamanation Kool-Aid drinkers will get what you deserve soon. The antichrist will be in office starting January 21st 2009!
Lol. Wow do some of you really know how insane you sound? First off the Antichirst will come from Europe, secondly Obama got almost 10 million more votes than the second candidate. Some of you are really trying to nitpick at him. What if Obama gets assasinated like JFK what will you idiots say then? What a bunch of intolerant pricks.

Oh by the way, Obama is the Islam Messiah called the Mahdi. The entire Arab nation, world wid,e celebrated this week because they believe they will soon fly the Islam Flag over the white house.
Lol @ you. That's it. I have nothing else to say to you. That's why the republicans got their ass handed to them, because people got tired of the bullshit that was being spewed these past 8 years. Please get your head checked.
lorenzo8500. As long as Obama keeps the agenda, status-quo. He will have nothing to worry about. JFK tried to create change and he sacrificed his life for it. Obama is a Corporate Hack. Corporate Hacks do what their told. Barack "Uncle Tom" Obama will not change anything.
I dont believe Obama ever come close to JFK, he is safe as long as he is playing ball for the elites. His cheif of staff appointment is a clear indication that it is going to be business as usual in Washington and of course I dispise Mcsame. The change Obama promised, I think, is going to be faces and names, the policy is going to be the same. More free hand out and more american lives for Israel and an eventual down fall of this great nation. I wish you could tell me in 2010 that I was wrong.
There you go making assumptions before the man get's in office. They said the same things about JFK and look what he did. Instead of believing what Alex Jones and the others is saying, come up with your own opinion. I agree with most of the things Ron Paul, Nader and even Alex Jones says but I'm not taking every word they say as the law. Do your own research and come up with your own conclusion, instead of others?
I dont believe Ron Paul made any comments regarding this matter, nor have I heared what Aex Jone has got say about it. My understanding is based on 30+ years of watching Washington Politics. The fact of the matter is you simply wont become a candidate for president, unless you are a sold out. The national media stifle you. By any standard Paul should have raced freely to the WH if the race was conrloed by the people. As I stated I hope I am wrong about Obama but I know better.
If you think you're offended now, you might want to pay very close attention to who Obama is choosing as his advisors and stop worrying over candidates the media completely ignored. You'll start wondering what Obama meant by the word "Change".
Thank you, Ali. I will never claim perfection, but I will ALWAYS be committed to the facts, regardless of what they reveal. We would all be a lot better off if the real deal were not so often lost in the spin.

Worried about the wrong stuff-that is the main problem! Pay attention to the real deal people! You latch on to one word and run like Hell. If you listen, instead of rattling, - you just might learn something!!
jpurry 3 years ago
You couldn't have said it better. Almost everything Nader says is vitally true for the country. He just says it in ways that make it too difficult for idiotic Americans to comprehend it. People listen to what he says in the interview, hear the words "uncle Tom", and act like he didn't say anything before and after that. Turns out he never called Obama an Uncle Tom. One day he might have to though.

I think Nader's comments were offensive because he tied race to his criticism of Obama when it wasn't necessary to make his point. Nader does have some good ideas on his website on how he'd run the country but to build a signficant third party it will take building a critical mass of public support. I'd also like to see his analysis on why he has not been able to build a critical mass beyond being shut out of mainstream media.
acanawuppazz 3 years ago
No he didn't.
hubristime 3 years ago
wow, very objective of you.
I imagine you're part of that 1% for Nader,
do you all meet in your basement and have an all nighter?
Nader's comment was chosen and used by him in anger and frustration towards the outcome of the election; so he knew exactly why he said it and the meaning. And you as many others defend this type of act as being just words, but they're not just words, they're evidence of how the true racist mentality is still alive and well inplanted.
mplcausa 3 years ago
Do you really think he expected to win the election? If so, you don't know Ralph. And you're ignoring his underlying point (despite his poor choice of words, as I have previously acknowledged), which has nothing to do with race: Will Obama be a president for the people and our Constitution, or just another special interest sellout? A perfectly appropriate question, especially considering his pro-war, anti-Fourth Amendment and anti-Bush accountability positions thus far, as the vid points out.
jperryam 3 years ago
The comment was racist because Nader only used the highly offensive "uncle tom" comment because Obama is an african-american. When challenged on the phrase by Smith, Nader shifted and said that he was only questioning if Obama was going to be a "toadie for the corporations." Well Nader could have queried if Obama was going to be a "toadie" in the first instance and there was no need to use "racially charged" language. So why did Nader decide to use racially charged terms that took him off msg?!
sergeantnorider 3 years ago
He didn't go off message (which was the fact that Obama has a choice of whether or not he's going to be a sellout). He just used the racially charged language to illustrate it. I agree he didn't need to use "Uncle Tom" to make the point. But he did it to maximize exposure of his underlying message, which, again, has nothing to do with race.
jperryam 3 years ago
Well I dont want to belabor the point but Nader certainly went off msg.He spent 2 mins fighting over what phrase would be appropriate rather than what specific policies Obama should stand tall on. And if what you are telling me is that americans in general (or even african-americans in particular) should ignore Nader's use of racially charged language because he's toiling unfairly under the obscurity of a 3rd party,I assure you tears are flowing down my cheek now. Please-its unacceptable period.
sergeantnorider 3 years ago
I never said it was acceptable, and I am most certainly not telling you or anyone else to ignore what Nader said. As I have repeatedly pointed out in comments here, it was a poor choice of words that he didn't need to make his point. What I'm saying is don't let the anger toward his language obscure the broader point, which has nothing at all to with Obama's race, but whether he will be a peoples' president or just another corporate puppet.
jperryam 3 years ago
Well I am black and I'm sad to say that you and I live in different realities (even after Obama's historic win although I'm hopeful). When blacks hear racially charged language it tends to be all we hear and whatever message was intended gets lost. I don't have the luxury of life experience to simply "move beyond" Nader's poor choice of words and I was "formerly" a big fan. Nader could have pushed his agenda by running for congress but his ego won't permit that and I now offically wash my hands.
sergeantnorider 3 years ago
Sorry you see it that way. I understand how the broader message can lost in the midst of justifiable anger and ultimately useless arguments, which is why I have repeatedly mentioned it here. A simple scroll up through my previous comments will illustrate my point. Nader has been pushing his agenda for 40-plus years and accomplished far more for this country than most people realize. His runs for the presidency have never been about simply winning, but expanding his body of work on our behalf.
jperryam 3 years ago
@sergeantnorider your an idiot. obama has done nothing for the black community he is an uncle tom. your offended by words but not by the harm this sell out has caused. obama is a joke. he grew up in white upper middle class world. he was never oppressed.

You are absolutely correct, sir. Thank you for posting this video. I have a lot of respect for Nader even though I'm a libertarian and do not agree w/ most of what he says. But, I couldn't care less what Nader calls Obama. Obama is a war hawk; that is a fact, and therefore he deserves respect from absolutely no one.
darkbluekey 3 years ago
This country has a history of racism and you're saying to forget that? This campaign was FULL OF RACISM AND RACIST COMMENTS...if you don't agree with that, you weren't following this election. If he was asking him if he was going to be a GOOD politician or MORAL politician, why not use THOSE words? If you don't see how some people can take offense to the Uncle Tom comment, I guess you never will.
shutdowncity007 3 years ago
We should never forget the history. Nader could have made his point just as effectively using different words. I really think he was going for the shock value to get people talking, which we absolutely need more of. My guess he will come to regret using "Uncle Tom" if he doesn't already. He's a good man who has done an incredible amount of good for his country, which is far more than can be said for Shepard Smith or any of those other self-righteous chumps at the Fox Propaganda Channel.

That fool on Fox news doesn't even understand what Nader was making.
rudeshonen 3 years ago
I got to ask a question about americans and their politics. Aren't you guys Capitalist? isnt your system built on Capitalism? then why do you bitch and moan about large corporations and the rich elites ruling the country? Governtment By the people for the people isnt that what Marx wrote? Capitalism will collapse on it self and you are now seeing the contradictions of it with the economic collapse.
KGBspartan4 3 years ago
You pretty much answered your own question with that last sentence. The problem is not capitalism itself, but the ever-growing greed of capitalists, which leads to the corruption of politicians who are supposed to be working for us. Some blow the smoke and others hold the mirrors, while corrupt benefactors fill their campaign coffers. Like every fraud it will eventually collapse completely, perhaps taking our system of government with it. Unless enough people wake up and do something about it.

Nice bonus for anonymous trolls like you.
jperryam 3 years ago
Back up what up saying? Sure 99% percent did NOT vote for Nader. Make my self look more ridiculous? Well you are the one who is the idiot that supports Nader. So it is you who looks ridiculous. Join you, the percentage will be higher? Are you serious? Nader had a higher percentage 4 years ago. He is going in the wrong direction. He should have stuck to being a consumer advocate. He was good at that. He doesn't have what it takes to be president and looks like an idiot for trying.
gspot2016 3 years ago
99% of the people voting to maintain a hopelessly corrupt two party system (where the two parties have conspired for years to shut out independent voices) will never make it right. It just means that most people (yourself included, obviously) cannot summon up the spine to deal accordingly with the ugly truth, so they just vote to maintain the corruption and crawl into hiding for another 4 years. It's not necessarily about electing Nader. It's about fixing broken government. Do you get it yet?
jperryam 3 years ago
With a name like yours, G SPOT (OMG) WE do Soooo understand!?
jpurry 3 years ago
You are a fool if you continue to believe that the current two party system exist for our benefit. The democrats and republicans have formed a Cartel to control this country, which is constitutionally illegal. If more people in obviously red or blue states voted for ANY third party candidate, then the electoral votes would go to the candidate of your choice, but our democracy would have a chance to grow. It is stagnating if you haven't noticed.
empERdoctor 3 years ago 4
I never said that I believe the current two party system exists for our benefit. I believe that the current two party system is in fact flawed. What I said was that Ralph Nader is an idiot for what he was trying to do and anyone that supported him is also a stupid idiot.
gspot2016 3 years ago
Nader knows he will never have to listen to reason since he will never be more than a candidate. I question his acceptance of funding from the Bush camp. It might have been hypocritical of Ralph to run as a Democrat but he should not have run against the Democrat in a tight election when the Republican was so close to being a rogue fascist who would eliminate workers' rights and benefits all together. He also refused to drop out when he should have dropped out to ensure a better outcome.
lescwilson 3 years ago
So he should have just stood down and continue to let a worthless two party corporate controlled system serve itself at the expense of the people, our Constitution and our country's moral standing in the world? Where's the logic in that? We gave dems control of Congress two years ago to get us out of Iraq and hold Bushco accountable. They responded by continually voting to keep funding the illegal occupation and taking impeachment off the table. They're no better than the other party.
jperryam 3 years ago
Ralph's runs for the presidency have always been far more about advancing reform than winning the election. Indeed, third party movements are responsible for some pretty big reforms in the history of this country. The abolition of slavery, the right of women to vote, child labor laws, etc. If it weren't for such efforts, there would never be any incentive for the two major parties to change. But so many these days are so caught up in the win/lose sports mentality they just don't get it.
jperryam 3 years ago
I'd have more trust in and respect for Ralph Nader if he chose Kucinich's strategy of running as a Democrat and backing out when it may cause the Republican candidate to win. I totally trust Kucinich. I also recently heard Nader promote a carbon tax. Somehow, it's kinda like he gives to us with one hand and takes it away with the other. Something just doesn't quite smell right. I know Nader is far too intelligent to believe that his candidacy in the Green Party wouldn't do any possible harm
lescwilson 3 years ago
It would have been hypocritical of Ralph to run as a Democrat, given his long standing position that there is no difference between the two major parties. I don't like the idea of a carbon tax either, but I think it would have been much easier to get a "President Nader" (who actually ran as an Independent this time, not a Green) to listen to reason on that issue than it will be to get President Obama to listen to reason regarding a complete withdrawal from Iraq.
jperryam 3 years ago
We will just have to agree to disagree I guess. I just think Nader's STRATEGY is suspicious. He could just as easily express his disapproval of the Dems/Repubs by doing what Kucinich did. He didn't have to run as a spoiler for the Dems and he was more critical of the Dems than the Repubs. Dems are more liberal. I agree with most of what Nader says, but it is mostly his MO I disagree with. In his MO he does as much harm as good. Kucinich has only done good for us, no bad. That's the difference.
lescwilson 3 years ago
thanks! it's so nice to see people like you speaking the truth when so many so called "progressives" including editor's of magazines by the same title, have been so dismissive and hostile towards Nader (and his supporters) who is the most humble, dedicated politician I can think of. I am very scared, already, there is a strong push to silence progressives and people that want peace to not criticize Obama, but we have to stop the war, we have to have social justice.
histerics3 3 years ago
Right on, my friend. Any "progressive" who so easily dismisses Nader and/or the whole independent/third party movement is really just a partisan Democrat "dialing for the same dollars," as Ralph has often said. Don't let those phonies scare you. Just keep challenging them with the truth. There are plenty of REAL anti-war, pro-justice people out here, and we will not be silenced.
jperryam 3 years ago
He still made a mistake... that should have never come out of his mouth. You don't ask a black man "Will you be an uncle tom?" under any circumstances. Would you ask any black man that question? I think not. He should have admitted he made a mistake when the anchor asked him.

Nader is brilliant. Hasn't it crossed your mind that he can't apologize for making a mistake, because he choose the "Uncle Tom" phrase intentionally? He wanted to make us talk. Saying bad, good, moral, immoral are ineffective in the age of sound bites.
empERdoctor 3 years ago 2
I have nothing personally against Nader... if he was going for just "shock" value, then mission accomplished. I just think if he was going for shock value, there had to be another way to do it. Just wrong words at the wrong time. I never said Nader is blatant racist and ban him forever as some of the replies seem to imply. We all make mistakes and say things sometimes that don't come out as intended. Don't you agree?

I agree Nader has done a lot of great things, but does anyone else think that his tone when he writes to Obama is unnecessarily rude? I think Nader loses a lot of support not because of the cause he fights for, but how he talks to people, like saying Obama's campaign has acted "cowardly." I wouldn't take someone seriously if they talked like that to me.
electricraccoon 3 years ago
It's fair to say that Ralph can sometimes come across as abrasive (or "rude" if you prefer). I think it's mostly the result of 40-plus years of fighting corporate power and knowing what it takes to beat the bastards, which he has done many times. It takes a thick skin and and an uncompromising nature, which can be misinterpreted. I think those who so quickly dismiss him because of this without considering his massive body of work and the respect it commands are just looking for an easy reason.
jperryam 3 years ago

research obama and you'll realize there was no hope to begin with as many of us who have half a brain voted 3rd party or didn't vote.
