There's no universal standard of seconds for holds. Expertly applied holds can render someone unconscious in four seconds or less, but it depends on the type of technique used, and the skill with which it's applied. Receiving instruction under the supervision of experienced masters is the only responsible way of learning how to apply these holds and how to monitor the level of consciousness in the person you are practicing on. Skill and technique dictate how long pressure is required.
NOT TO PREACH...but I was in the Marine Corps and you should NOT do this if you dont know what you're doing. Your opponent will pass out around the 9-11 second range but they can die if you keep the hold passed the 18-21 second range...they'd at LEAST have some brain damage if they're lucky in that zone. Also, when applying the choke you want your elbow squared on the chest.
Yeah, hypoxia is crazy. I remember doing stuff like this in jujitsu. Fading out is a weird sensation. Mentally, you start losing track of where you are, voices around you fade into incoherent jibber, and probably most striking to me was my inability to comprehend what was going on around me, although I was conscious, at least for a little while. At that point we usually let go of each other though.
NOTE TO ALL: DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD PROPER TRAINING. Blood chokes are really really dangerous, if the brain gets deprived of oxygen things start going wrong almost instantly. You could give someone brain damage from only a few seconds of this is you do it incorrectly.
The easiest way to black out is to first hyperventilate and after you start feeling dizzy you press the sides of your neck with your hands(press both of your carotid arteries) and after you have held for about 3 secs you start going hypoxic. The safest way to do a blood choke is to do it yourself because another person might hold you too long in the choke and you might get brain damage ,but if you do it yourself once you blackout you will lose all muscle control and u will let go of your neck.
@gunitakon Involuntary muscle spasms are common when you lose consciousness. It is similar to the jerk reaction you experence when you fall asleep and you feel a falling sensation- your brain registers that your body is relaxing and misinterprets the signals as falling/threat. This results in the involuntary spasms that wake you up again, and it is similar when you are put out with a air/blood choke. Holds like this are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and should only be practiced by trained professionals.
awesomest feeling in the world? getting it done to you while wrestling and losing consciousness is about the scariest thing actually....fuck doing that for fun
yes they will, you are correct. The problem is that air chokes can damage the trachea. So for practice, blood chokes are safer. Feel free to research.
yup. 5 seconds is the timing we usually tell others but it can happen faster.
and to the guy below: wind chokes DONT take forever, they take LONGER than blood chokes, that is all. Any ordinary person can hold his breath for over a minute and thus the wind choke will take longer. You will pass out after a minute or so but not die from it. Like the blood choke, the wind choke has to be sustained for death.
That's only if they panic and start [try] hyperventilating. Wind chokes take longer because people can hold their breathe and it can take about 30 seconds before the air deprivation actually takes effect on sight and consciousness.
Blood chokes block off blood flow from one or both carotid arteries or jugular veins. The brain is immediately deprived of oxygen, leading to unconsciousness and ultimately (if not released) to brain damage or death. They'll be out in a few seconds.
