I adopted a box turtle from my sister in law and all it has ever eaten is insects and we are having problems getting her to eat vegetables, we bought some paste stuff, and some protien pellets but she refuses to eat them, can you help me?
Um I have a question I have a box turtle and I have all the filters and things for a red ear slider and I wanted to know if it is ok to keep a box turtle in a aquarium with a red ear slider? Some one please Reply?????? =)
@Flamingcobra98 Of course its not ok, Box Turtles are purely land animals and only go into the water to drink and occasionally to cool down and even then, its only in very shallow water
@Flamingcobra98 Of course its not ok, Box Turtles are purely land animals and only go into the water to drink and occasionally to cool down and even then, its only in very shallow water
umm ok i have a question, i hear your suppost to soak a box turtle for 15 to 30 mins every day, i dont have money for a humidifier, so i soak him in warm water (not to hot, not to cold) every morning in a small plastic storage tub, is it ok to have him soaking in the bathroom while i take a shower?...so i guess my question is, IS THE STEAM THAT FILLS THE ROOM WHEN I TAKE A SHOWER GOOD FOR MY BOX TURTLE?
by the sounds of it, you shouldn't be allowed a pet... you realise that releasing a sick turt into the wild, is probally the worst thing to do?im no expert..but here's a tip, your local vet is....

THANK YOU! A couple questions: What is a good salad for a turtle? Where is your turtles drinking area? Also, are those fake plants, or real plants? I heard fake plants are dangerous because if the turtle ingests them, they are not good. Please answer soon!
ummmmm, you can't use that everyday it can make the turtle sick. And I feed my turtle fish oil, she dos not like it so I just use a shot, fill it up with fish oil and inject it in her food. she eats it without knowing
I wonder whats Better Substrate or the Carpert that she uses? My Box Turtles are Hatchllings and They Just Stay Buried Under The Substrate most of the Day...
ive had my turtle 4 almost a month now nd i love her :) their favorite foods r dandalianes lol idk if i spelled that right but ya nd they love mustard and collard greens nd i feed her those large fishing bait worms that u can get at like wal mart but i only feed herone large one every other day or so
@strawberryluv767 i have 2 box turtles as well try feeding them tomatoes, strawberries and crickets as well they loves them. ive had both turtles for about 6years now
@dinosuar11030 If you can't take care of it, give it to someone else. My general rule is if I can't get an animal to eat or drink on the third day I let it go(as in put it back) or give it back to the store or person I got it from.
If you want to learn more about box turtles, try Tess Cook's box turtle website. This is not a good set-up for a box turtle, and meal worms are not the best food for a box turtle.
@dinosuar11030 well you should feed i feed mine some greens with carrots and apples and some meal worms and i put a vitamin supplement called repti-cal on it and i use a 5.0 uvb bulb (for vitamin d) and a 60 watt bulb (for heat) i have a shallow dish of water that she can get into easily and won't drown and for the substrate would use something she/he can burrow into like repti-bark i would also recommend a hide like a half log. if ur mom caught it in the wild i would put it back
@DBDshow12 no all turtkesshould have like spots and stuff,... i think and when turtles have red eyes that means its a boy and girls have brown eyes.....no i dont htink there is such thing as turtle eye drops and ya those look like their decorarion around the soaking area cuz it ook like there is a rock bowl there

@GolfinMySoxOff I am a box turtle expert at 90+ years. and i feed my box turtles lard and lye soap. They love it, and they love me. I AM A 120 YEAR OLD MAN WITH A SERIOUS APPETITE FOR BOX TURTLES AND YAMS. Luve em!
A few days ago i caught a box turtle and i don't know how to make it eat. The only time i made it eat was when i opened it's mouth myself and put a worm in there (it was my only choice.) How can i make it eat?
@DuckzOnQuack you ld t it back in the same area you found it or within a mile of that area. Wild turtle that are out into captivity, usually don't survive to long due to stress.
Nice video with good information, I live in coastal North Carolina and a box turtle has built a nest by the veggie garden, I think she will lay eggs and I wanted to know what to feed her , so per you a veggie salad mix is good, plus a source of water, I can do that, she is wild so I have not touched her but she looks good, is there anything more I should do to help her???
NO CITRUS FRUITS-no oranges, pineapples, nothing in that family. I put mine out in a pen in the spring time, I don't hibernate them (up for debate as to whether that's healthy or not) but contrary to popular belief, males are still fertile if not hibernated. I have babies to prove it. :o) I've had my female 3toed boxie 20 years this August and my male 19 years. I kept two of the sons and had to give the others up for adoption to the GCTTS.
I tend to go to the store and buy one of whatever they have there at any given time-apple, pear, zucchini squash, snow peas, apricots, peaches, raw carrot, cucumber, yellow squash....then chop them into tiny tiny pieces (or in a food processor) and they eat it like it's going out of style. They also love the bait worms that are huge, I guess that's the same as your worms. Their appetite picks up in summer so they eat ravenously while in winter it's dialed back quite a bit.
im thinking buying a box and russian turtle but i want to know how much do they grow expample in 2 months each of them , i really dont like big turtles they scare me
The box turtle is a gruesome eater and loves the insects and meat. Can move much faster and require a wetter environment.
The Russian is slower and a vegetarian, so easy to keep well fed. They generally will approach you seeking food which makes it pretty cool, but the box does that to, all be it at a much faster pace.
However, I give the Russian a 9/10 and the box a 8/10.
HY I WANTED TO ASK YO IF YOU COULD SHOW ME YOUR BOX TURTLE =) y mother in law found one walking on the street and i think is abox turtle, she gave it to me and i need to compare
my box turtle she will eat worms, slugs, mill worms, beatles, grapes, peaches, tomatoes, cherrys, strawberrys, cucumbers and carrots i love my roxy i've had her since she was the size of a half dollar. she's 2 years allmost three you can find the food they eat at a pet store so the guy below me knows. and it might not eat cuz it dont like what your givin it mine wont eat cabbage or radishes.
There is a good monograph about ornates called, Natural History of the Ornate Box Turtle, Terrapene ornata ornata Agassiz by John M. Legler. I think you will like it since it talks about the natural history of these turtles and that is what we pet owners should strive to give our reptile pets. Even zoos have learned that much, and are now trying to give their animals natural enclosures.
Please buy the new book about box turtles by TFH Publications because you are not giving adequate advice and the housing is not set up right for box turtles-even for the ornate, which it looks like you have. They still need moisture. Ornates are mainly insectivous, as she has been trying to tell you :) They eat crickets, grasshoppers, beetles and other types of insects, plus carrion, protein rich desert plants, flowers and fallen fruits.
My box turtle will not eat, and I do not know why? He likes to push his little hiding place into water and sit there almost all day and doesn't eat any vaggies that I give him? Where do you find those worms?
I have one that does not like veges either, but he will eat berries. Some pet stores carry the mealie worms and king worms. They can also eat crickets (grasshoppers), flies, worms.
u say it needs 2 be outside im getting 1 from a friend and its lived in cage for 5 years where i live i couldnt make a outdoor thing but if i let it roam in my house during day is that ok? i know nothing about them please message me
Mine walks around the house. You just have to make sure you watch where you step! They will find a cool, dark place to hide and sometimes it takes a while to find them!
Wow - fish tanks are really bad for box turtles. They need to be kept outdoors. They can be kept alive in a fish tank, but they thrive outdoors. How sad.
lady, you are clearly no expert--box turtles are NEVER supposed to live in a tank..if you need to keep them in something, they make wire/cork cages to be put outdoors
2. it has a high chance of causing impaction to the intestines, which it will eventually die from, or the sand will wear out the intestines, even if it does pass through, so it will be shortening the life of your box turtle. it cannot dig a burrow in the sand, or even dig into the substrate because it is so thin (looks like hardly even an inch deep)
fourth,mealworms/superworms/kingworms have a bad phosphorus:calcium ratio so they should only be fed occasionally. ornates are omnivorous.
third, this type of box turtle is an ornate. ornate box turtles require a medium to high humidity enclosure.
they also require a diggable substrate like moist organic potting soil or ecoearth/bedabeast. Sand is an EXTREMELY bad substrate for turtles because, 1. it doesn't hold much humidity at all.
first, they need a water bowl to fully submerge in.
second, glass is very bad for any tortoise or box turtle. it should either be on an outside enclosure, kiddie pool, fenced off area, or wooden enclosure ie tortoise table (but not pine or cedar due to their bad oils that can cause problems to the tortoise or box turtle)
that aquarium is also very small for any box turtle. only hatchlings can be kept in a glass tank until they get to a few inches.
I adopted a box turtle from my sister in law and all it has ever eaten is insects and we are having problems getting her to eat vegetables, we bought some paste stuff, and some protien pellets but she refuses to eat them, can you help me?

shadowsunzc 3 years ago
yes! at least something large enough for them to fit into.

they should be fed crickets or silkworms instead of mealworms and should be fed more meat than veggies or fruit.about 40% plants, 60% meats.
also, does it have a uvb bulb?

What about pebels mixed with cypress bedding?
shadowsunzc 3 years ago
it's too hard to burrow burrow in that but you could mix cypress bedding with organic potting soil.

2. it has a high chance of causing impaction to the intestines, which it will eventually die from, or the sand will wear out the intestines, even if it does pass through, so it will be shortening the life of your box turtle. it cannot dig a burrow in the sand, or even dig into the substrate because it is so thin (looks like hardly even an inch deep)
fourth,mealworms/superworms/kingworms have a bad phosphorus:calcium ratio so they should only be fed occasionally. ornates are omnivorous.

third, this type of box turtle is an ornate. ornate box turtles require a medium to high humidity enclosure.
they also require a diggable substrate like moist organic potting soil or ecoearth/bedabeast. Sand is an EXTREMELY bad substrate for turtles because, 1. it doesn't hold much humidity at all.

wow that's a completely wrong setup!!!
first, they need a water bowl to fully submerge in.
second, glass is very bad for any tortoise or box turtle. it should either be on an outside enclosure, kiddie pool, fenced off area, or wooden enclosure ie tortoise table (but not pine or cedar due to their bad oils that can cause problems to the tortoise or box turtle)
that aquarium is also very small for any box turtle. only hatchlings can be kept in a glass tank until they get to a few inches.

the need half water half land atleast 6inches of water

Not for a box turtle - they're not the best of swimmers. A soaking pan is OK indoors.
