  • in this scene i want to know where they are supposed to be situated.....in the atlantic or pacific ? how far off shore ?

  • Besides... I am not english mother-tongued... but Quint has a strange accent, what kind of accent is it? I have read that Shaw was born in England but that is surely not a british accent or.. is it?

  • I have just read on the internet movie database that Robert Shaw himself wrote this monolgue.

  • Spielberg wrote the original monolgue which was merely a paragraph, and when he gave it to Gottlieb for review, Gottlieb wrote his own version that was about 3-4 pages long. After Shaw read the script, he asked if he could rewrite the speech, and the result is what was put in the movie, so yes, Robert Shaw did write that version of the speech.

  • at 1:55, brody thinks about showing quint & hooper his appendix scar, because he feels so left out. then he decides against it. a tiny, beautiful moment in this glorious scene. thanks for posting.

  • I saw this movie for the first time when I was 7, and to this day I'm still terrified of sharks! What really did it was this scene; his delivery, the pacing; everything! Absolute masterpiece!

  • I saw on a interview with Schneider that Shaw was in fact drunk when he did this monologue. The next day they re-shot it when he was sober. However the "drunk" version was better. So they kept it instead. Pretty cool!

  • Superb monologue, amazing scene, excellent movie!

"Sometimes the shark go away..........sometimes he wouldn't go away."

Between the line itself, the delivery, and the look on Quint's face, that gives me chills every time I hear it.

  • Jaws (the first movie) i think was the best of all

  • no doubt about that.

  • This is probably the greatest scene of all time.

  • yeah and the Exorcist was a lame hollywood film too...idiot wake up

    Jeffg

  • The Exorcist was much better. That said - your mother sucks cocks in hell!

  • Jaws the film can not be remade, because of this scene. This scene can't be remade and no Jaws film would be right without.

  • Agreed... but that won't stop them.

  • And i will hunt down and kill the executive who green lights it.

  • By "executive" are you talking about a president? Most likely it will be congress or a judge who lifts the ban that allows one of the First Nations to take one of the more than 24,000 Grays thought to be in the Eastern Pacific.

Just do me a favor if you are successful, promise that you eat any executive you kill, Chef Dahmer.

  • No dude. I am talking about green lighting a remake of the movie!!!!.

    Chef Dahmer.

  • Agreed, those three characters- esp Shaw would be too tough to follow.

This scene here does unfortunately get the Indys sinking date wrong by one month..

  • Its such a great scene. It doesn't need to be 100% accurate because people never know the truth, especially when they are the men going in there. You can't make up the line "Like a doll's eyes"

  • Wow. What a great scene. I love how the whale singing is the only way to bring them back to normal conversation. I mean, how would you respond to Quint after that story? Fantastic monologue and perfect segue.

  • ...it could have been worse, you could have been in Hiroshima with that bomb.

  • Maybe the whale is a nod to Melville's "Moby Dick."

Interesting too is that Japan (another subject of Melville's books) is one if not THE biggest pro-whaling nations in existence today. I am personally neutral on that subject, though I hope the Wa. State Macah Tribe can keep it's whaling tradition alive -should they desire.

  • I personally dont know how a human being with normal feelings can fire a gigantic metal harpoon through an animal that breaths air like we do, nurses its young, communicates, has a gentle nature about it. And no doubt feels pain like we do. Humans need to stop assuming we sit at the top of the food chain.

  • I think you've progressed too far up the food chain and have forgotten what it is like to have to survive and feed your family/relatives or face starvation. The Macah's harvested one whale back in 1999, but haven't hunted any since.

  • Probably one of the best scenes I have ever seen in any movie, back in the day when hollywood made good movies.

  • One of my favorite monologues in any movie...

  • I believe Robert Shaw scripted this entire monologue himself and insisted on doing it this way in the film.

  • great scene! incredible acting, and actually when he came in to try out for this role he came in drunk and read that script

  • I had never known a single scene in any movie before this one that could make the hairs stand up on the back of my head with nothing more than sheer dialogue. Brilliant scene in a classic film.

  • This scene is scarier than the shark eating people

  • what a great film.

  • If this scene were done today, all three characters would be played by actors who look like over grown teenagers, or former members of a boy band. Science says that male chromosomes are disappearing and that in 5000 years there won't even be any males. I think it's happening faster than that.

  • dude, well said. genious, pure fuckin genious

  • I keep saying to myself..."I have not seen a very good movie in a loooong time", then I find myself pulling out these classic movies with genius scenes. Hollywood is just not the same.

  • Robert Shaw as Quint is timeless. I love how the three of them keep us on the edge of our seats while hunting for the killer shark.

  • Fantastic scene, also has a brilliant ending line.. "anyway, we delivered the bomb".

  • the best scene in the whole movie! without a doubt

  • A very spooky story. The music made it even moreso. God it must have been hell with those sharks on that crew.

  • So much humour, so much fear - in one little scene. Brilliant. The music is perfect too.

  • best scene in film. Shaw is magic.

  • drin to your leg? i drink to your leg, ok so drink to our legs ahhahahah XD fantastic scene

  • My grandpa had a friend on the Indy. My dad remembers meeting him. He said that the sharks would swim right up to you and touch you. When they came in contact with you, it felt like somebody was punching you. It was scary.

  • This is probably my favorite scene ever.

  • this scene is magic, shaw steals the limelight tbh, shame he dies

  • I heard that Robert Shaw was completely shitfaced drunk for this scene.

  • read cracked did we?

  • LMAO yeah!

  • well then, a thumbs up for you and a happy comment

  • Nah, he was sober. They tried to record it while he was drunk, but they couldn't, so they sent him home. He called Spielberg later on that night and asked him for another chance, so they shot it in one take the next day.

  • I wouldn't be surprised. Great acting.

  • Saw this movie as a child, was not scared at all by it, but that scene - and the last one - remain cool.

  • best scene ever

  • in this scene where abouts are they supposed to be located ? in the middle of the atlantic at around midnight ? anyone know ?

    cheers

  • It's so creepy how he compares a shark's eyes, to a doll's eyes. "shudder".

  • This scene, more then the shark ripping dudes in half, traumatized me as a kid.

  • If you listen closely, at 4:37 you can hear them flip the cue card!

  • Sounds like someone writing on it instead

  • Some of the most iconic film monologues were written by actors at the last minute. This is one of them.

  • Yea, like Gary busy's mono in Surviving the Game, it was just gold.

  • Indeed. I think Gary actually based that monologue on a personal experience of his.

  • Wow surprised you knew that one, its kind of a rare movie and also underrated.

  • I'm a fan of the Zodiac. Any iteration of The World's Most Dangerous Game is worth a gander (especially when it has Busey in it).

  • The Robert Shaw's speech is perfect! I like his voice!

  • One of the best moments in the film, more tension than any other scene throughout.

  • You can fall asleep watching CGI, but no one ever forgets scenes like this.

  • Amen.

  • This entire scene is wonderful, but Robert's delivery of this speech is just superb. The fact that Robert Shaw wrote the final draft of this dialogue himself, and then nailed the delivery of it perfectly, makes this scene even more priceless.

  • No blood, no gore, but this scene, IMHO, is the most chilling of the entire movie. You could just picture yourself floating helplessly for days in the Pacific along with Quint, awaiting the next wave of sharks.

  • Even better that the story is true.

  • LOL Brody has no scars to show off!

  • Everyone of the three heroes were good. I love that scene and I´ve watched it so often in the past weeks but it´s still perfect. The story of the sailors of the indianapolis is touching and the fact that quint, hooper and brody are so "happy" together (maybe because of the drinks they took)is so cool

    five stars

  • How he didn't win an oscar for this role i'll never know!

  • Agreed, who won that year?

  • exactly in my opinion he was the best carictter in the film

  • I wonder will they ever do a movie about the crew of The USS Indianoplis?

  • I've read that Robert Shaw was seriously fucked up during parts of this scene to due to booze and opiates that John Bonham and Robert Plant were supplying him during filming.

Led Zeppelin were there at alot of times during the filming because thier manager Peter Grant was lifelong friends with Robert Shaw.

In fact you can see a very quick glimpse of Rober Plant on the beach when that kid gets eaten. You have to be real observant as hes dresses an an Amish woman.

  • Amish woman???

Well i wouldn't be surprised if Shaw was drunk, he did very very good.

  • "Im a saltwater fisherman myself NORTH CAROLINA COAST "Farewell and ad'o ye fair spainish ladies, fairwell and ad'o ye ladies of spain. We've just recieved orders to head back to Boston, and so never more shall we see you agian".

  • One of my all time favorite scenes! Robert Shaw and Roy Scheider were two of the best actors, may they rest in peace.

  • Amen

  • Dreyfuss was good too.

  • I agree!

  • Yup, one of the all-time classic movie scenes. Unfortunately the Indy was sunk on JULY 30TH. Now you guys have gotta shoot the scene over. :-)

  • Robert Shaw was an excellent actor. People

have tried to replicate this scene on here.

    Doesnt even come close !

  • this is one of the greatest scenes in film history

  • That was so good I actually believe Robert Shaw was on the Indianapolis.

  • I think this is the only scene I really enjoyed as a kid. Besides the ending I guess. I wasn't sure exactly what were talking about then but the mood of it really caught me.

  • i read he was anywhere from hammered to buzzed when he did this scene. it had to be done numerous times on account of his intoxication. which if i was an actor id wanna be also doing a scene like this, such emotional depth. i feel i could reach higher emotional levels not being sober.

  • "It's part of fishing"

  • Robert Shaw just got the gold. He got one of the most dificult roles and did something special no one could reach this! R.I.P. Mr. Shaw. We gonna miss you!

  • "show me the way to go home..." classic song!

  • A classic!!! Love the movie!!! Thanks for the video!!!

  • best monologue ever...

  • its impossible to pick holes in this performance, three actors that go together perfectly ,but Shaw stole the show in this movie, Tremendous!!

  • Fantastic.

  • Best scene of the whole movie. No need for special effects. RIP Robert Shaw.

  • Peter Benchley rocks the shit in this one

  • Fine performances and great dialogue. Mr. Dreyfuss, Mr. Scheider and Mr. Shaw did some of their finest work in this film in my opinion. Sad that the latter two gentlemen are no longer with us.

  • screenplay at its best. you have managed to identify what would, in any other given scenario, be an oscar winning perfomance - particularly by shaw. good man raywode

  • I thought Robert Shaw improvised the whole monologue. Either way, the way he delivered it was awesome. This truly is the best scene in the movie, all the way up until Jaws beats on the hull. The whale thing was extra cool when I first watched it. It was like they were morning the dead of the Indianapolis

  • This is the best scene in the whole movie!!! I love the entire movie, this just adding somenthing to it. Just the guys hanging out. Thank you for posting it.

    David

  • "I'll never put on a life jacket again"...Great line...amazing scene! The scene is so captivating and haunting at the same time!

  • did they really get pissed for this scene ? or is it fantastic acting?

  • I think that was just fantastic acting

  • I like Quint and this scene is perhaps the best in the movie. I like it that Hooper and Quint are getting somekind of friendly and forget their arguments because they had a little drink (about an hour ago^^) Well I love this movie but it´s a pitty that Quint dies at the end. Well, anyway, the movie is great...five stars

  • are you serious dude?

  • ill always remember this scene

  • Incredible stuff.Robert Shaw lived near my home in Ireland i found out recently, and it made me want to learn more about his life and movies.

  • I agree with you J S R. This scene especially is one of the greatest in movie history. We finally get to see how Quint's resentment towards sharks has made him the man he is. I love this movie too. It is my all time favorite.

  • I never get whys Brody lifting his shirt like he's checking out something down below. What was that about?? reply please

  • I always assumed he had a scar from his appendix or similar and was embarrased that was the only scar he had to show.

  • okhey thanks :D

  • such a monologue

  • Quint stole the whole movie, and his charachter was simply the best...!

  • I swear I watch this movie atleast once a month. Quint stole every scene, and his charachter was one of the most interesting charachter I have ever seen in a movie.

I heard he was a drunk, and a "son of a bitch" according to Schneider, but you had to love him.

  • I still can watch this movie over and over again...

  • It it one of the best movie scene ever!!!!!!!

    Robert Shaw is so huge!!!!!!!!

    Best actor's trio ever gathered

  • i love richard dreyfuss's laugh too. he makes me laugh and smile. i loved him in mr hollond's opus also.

  • GREATEST scene ever, because it's a true story!!!! FANTASTIC ACTING!!!!!!!

  • does anyone else notice that the old man has some serious mojo workin?

    hot diggity!

  • I love Richard Dreyfuss' laugh :)

  • I think the most amazing thing about this is its the only time in the movie Quint opens up and exposes himself, revealing a rather scary void. Like the shark he's almost without humanity, driven by a single compulsion to kill. Robert Shaw deserved an Oscar for this.

  • yes he did! the way he told that story was gripping

  • Too true-was he even nominated?!

  • METOOOO...

  • whats so amazing and chilling about this speech he gives is that it is more scarier listening to this then any cheap horror movie hollywood throws at you today.......masterpiece movie from a master director

  • Nice

  • thanks, I love this speech...Great Actor...
