First time I've heard this, and like Sparrow, when first heard (40 yrs ago), I am captivated. Quirky lyrics which don't quite make sense on first hearing... however will have fun digesting.
Liked the music and singing when I first heard this song. Now, that I heard and listened to the lyrics, tears almost came. I was only 18 years and now I am 60. Wisdom came slow to me. Mary is an artist exemplar. That recent video of hers, wanting to record a metal song and her son stopping her; showed me that she is human like all the rest of us. Whew! I thought an actual angel had visited us in 1969. Glad Paul listened to Twiggy.
It has been like revisiting a long lost friend to listen again to Earth Song. We played the vinyl so much in our house, and the remastered CD far exceeds the quality of the original. International is a beautiful song, but I could not imagine hearing anyone but Mary sing this. She makes it and its words all her own.
Wow, one's own mother shouldn't give goosebumps but this does. There's a live version of this on "Live at the Royal Festival Hall 1972" which is on our label, Mary Hopkin Music. Proud to promote my mum, especially new stuff! Find out more and buy albums at maryhopkin com
One of the most talented singers ever. If you like this track buy Mary's new CD 'Now and Then' . It includes such gems as 'What A Friend You Are' 'Life Song' 'One Less Set of Footsteps' and 'Shamarack'. Pure magic to the ears from a most wonderful lady.
@gstuart01 so if I am ugly, do you think that God didn't make me? or do you think God is also ugly??? Sorry if I may seem blasphemous but I just like to question religious reasoning and logic

Ive never seen or heard anything so beautiful in my entire life. She is an angel from heaven, and her entire being breathes out pure beauty..in absolute excellence..no doubt she is truly a gift from God.
Earth Song/Ocean Song is in my opinion one of the top albums ever made. Just listen to the swirly beginning of "There's Got to Be More", the creeping slow guitar into to "Martha" and the pair of songs representing the title of the album. That album is ten songs of brilliance. I can never just play one side much less one track. The whole LP, every time. BTW in England the titles and artist name were reversed on the LP jacket.
i amd an intimate friend of mine loves the bodyshop from uk.....do you know the brand loves the earth, and recently begins to sell satsuma and japanese cherry blossoms. this cosmetic brandname is very popular among us.
I had the album 'Earth Song Ocean Song'on a very bad quality tape. "Martha" has always been "my" song and the album one of the finest ever made. I just happened to find a original vinyl lp in a webstore. Happy as a child, after 30 years, finding it back.
ES/OS has been available on CD since 1995 and the sound quality is wonderful, worth getting hold of, but to be honest I still like to listen to my old vinyl records all the clicks and pops make it more magical somehow... Must be New Year melancholy taking hold, its 1.47am I have a glass of wine great music and a keyboard!!!
I totally agree with you, I have been telling people for years that Mary was a whole lot more than "those were the days" everyone should have earth song ocean song in their collection.
Gallagher and lyle have written some superb songs... did you know they joined the Beatles publishing company Apple in the 60's and the first of their songs that Mary recorded was "Sparrow" the b side to Goodbye, she went on to record lots more, she loved their work
From the 2nd album 'Earth Song Ocean Song' released 1971, the best folk album forever. The best tracks are 'international','Street of London' and 'Paper Water and Clay'. Album was produced by her ex-husband Tony Visconti, he produced about 10 albums for David Bowie under RCA record label. Mary also did a backin vocal in the song 'Soung and Vision' of the album 'Low'(1977).
This is great, she also did a video at the same time for the same show of "there's Got to be More" 2 of her best songs from the "earth song Ocean song" album

some people have to see everything perverted, why is that?
gstuart01 2 years ago 5
because they seem to thrive on abject negativity
to me they're sickos
GUIDOBRAT 2 years ago
@GUIDOBRAT You are the one who sounds negative to me. Calling people "sickos" instead of understanding them.

@LogInAnders and you are the NUMBER #1 sicko...you've always been sick, LogInAnders...face it.

@GUIDOBRAT Yes, I am sick and you are healthy.I am bad and you are good. You are clearly not happy like this. Try to become very rational.

very well said--agree 100% (been a fan of Mary since 1968--being a GIANT Beatles fan, we all naturally found out about Mary very early on)

Don't forget to look at Mary Hopkin in Italy January 31, 1969 from faulmacca.
At the end it shows an interview and a snapshot of Mary singing Fields of St. Etienne. Short but wonderful.

There's Got To Be More' is so good, but i prefer 'Streets of London' and 'Water Paper and Clay'from the album 'Earth Song Ocean Song'. '

I have tried to pick my favourite song from that album and cannot choose between any of them ...
