its simply not true that hondas have ALWAYS exceeded crash testing. There are model years i wouldnt dare
buy. i did plenty of research before i bought my 8th generation honda. i considered buying used one until i learned how some can be cut in half from a side impact. i simply wont allow my passengers (FAMILY) to be put at risk like that.
i got tboned last thursday in my honda civic 05, a toyota celica hit me doin a little less than 40 i imagine as he slammed on the breaks. the 2 right side doors on my civic completely dented in and crumbled. the 05' celica only had his bumper a bit dislocated with just a crack below its headlight -_-! THATS A BITCH! why did my car end up getting all fkd up?!
@nastypop its because the celica's bumper is made of plastic and will reform after it gets squashed, the door panels on your car are metal and when dinted wont reform and will look more damaged
My 2000 Honda Civic EX and I went through the almost same crash. It is scary to see what it looked like in slow motion. I came out of it with bleeding/weeping seat belt burns, air bag burns on arms, Extremely bruised chest (air bag contact - better that a stearing wheel at 50 mph). Mine was a Dodge Caravan vs. my Honda Civic
my brother had an accident in my 2003 honda civic with a Ford F150, a Ford Econoline, and a Chevy Malibu, and the the car performed exactly like this test here. I was surprised my brother made it out alive. If it wasn't for these japanese "tin cans" i don't think my brother would be alive...that's why i only drive Honda/Acura!
I survived a car accident last year, and yes this car is very good im surprised I still alive I crash like 90kmph hit. honda civic is a very very good car
wow whoever is sitting in the passenger side backseat is going to killed creamed, look at that. japanese cars are like tin cans on wheels, they just arent safe.
"Tin cans on wheels"? That's rubbish. The Honda Civic performed exactly the way it was supposed to in this crash test and is among the safest small cars on the market.
Go to iihs(dot)org and check out results of the pre-2004 Ford F-150, Dodge Neon, Chevy Astro or Pontiac Montana to see what's "not" supposed to happen.
msall150, I don't think you understand how crash-tests work. ANY small vehicle against ANY much larger vehicle would inherently be at a disadvantage. But the fact remains that, compared to other small cars, the Civic is a top performer while, compared to other pickups, the pre-2004 F-150 is a poor performer. So in a single-vehicle crash against a wall, you'd be better off in the Civic.
It looks late, but it inflated just barely in time.
According to the IIHS, injury measures to the head were low enough to rate GOOD. But, any later and the airbag inflation would've been sensed in the dummy's head accelerometer, which would translate into an injury measure.
The previous generation Honda Odyssey tested with a similar problem, but was corrected and confirmed with the second retest.
The car WAS going 40 MPH and the front is designed to crush up like that. That's what's called a "crumple zone," a sacrificial part of the body designed to lessen the effects of blunt force trauma against your body.
The crumpling of the front part of the car disperses the impact energy, softening the blow against the occupants while the safety cage that the occupants occupy stays intact to keep them from getting crushed.

Honda have always exceeded the latest crash test requirements years before they even came into affect, they are the safest cars on the road!

T bones always hurt the car getting hit on the side more than the car getting hit on it's bumper.

There's a big difference between your 2000 civic and this one shown in the video. It has a 5 star rating.

Yeah, that is prob. why after I went for a follow up, my sternum was cracked. But, I did buy a used 03 Civic EX just two day ago.

id love to see a crash test of a civic vs an F150. The civic would get absolutely pummeled. It would be hilarious in fact.

@corvetteboy10
I said "pre-2004" F-150, which means the F-150 for model years before 2004 - in other words, the 1997-2003 model.

are you referring to the front part?
they were made to be crushed, then the energy will be dispersed from to the sides away from the passengers

Go look up the CHEVROLET Cavalier, then tell me about tin cans on wheels!
I own a 2003 Cavalier BTW!

if it wasnt for the rims, that car would be the size of this message box
Kooly1 5 years ago
With or without rims, the safety cage, if properly designed, will not buckle in this collision.
If you want some examples of an unstable safety cage design, check out crash tests of the Dodge Neon and the Jiangling Landwind.
Particularly in the Landwind, the driver-side rim was under the driver's foot.
