love this song soo much. if you listen to this on top primo speakers / headphones, and listen to it in flac or high quality you can pick up alot of detail. sounds like a voice(?) or something along those lines is hidden among the drums at some points in the track.
This track always puts a lump in my throat for sounding soooo sorrowful and beautiful at the same time :-) ...Autechre's music is getting me through another break up
@jayhasbombhair well alot of people would put it under idm (intelligent dance music) but i think the term used for this genre is a cloaked insult. id say most of autechres stuff is either jazz-like electronica or some people call the idm style brain dance. its basically free form electronic music. hope that was of help :)
@keggg1234 IDM was a term invented and used almost exclusively by american music journalists/critics, it was very rarely used in europe, "experimental electronica" is probably the closest we can get to an umbrella term for the genre which incorporates such giants as autechre, aphex, mu-ziq, squarepusher, BoC etc but these artists and their music are still so much more than that
This song is really a study in 3 part patterns laid on top of 4 part patterns. In the first two minutes the beat follows a 3-measure cycle, which causes friction against the 8-bar melody. The beat mutates a little bit with each repetition so there is a constant sense of shifting. The rest of the song, the beat settles on a one-bar repeating pattern. But at 4:26 or so, the weirdly-processed-banjo starts playing a 3-bar cycle, which causes constant shifting against the main 8-bar pattern. Genius.
@stethoscanomaly Right, I wasn't referring to the number of beats per measure. Each measure has four beats, and there are 3 measures in the beat loop and 8 measures in the melody loop.
That depends on how experimental you want it to sound... Virtually all of Autechre's albums have this feel to them (with the exception of Quaristice).
I dont think untitled is anything like LP5 nothing like you can tell they are both Ae but LP5 is so more ethereal and quarsice is more like unttiled but a tad more mellower and abstract !
Further on the album Amber by AE goes from cold, metalic, and robotic to warm, full, and organic sounds. That was the track that got me hooked and I get the same feeling with this track too :)
This music moves between being a dance tune more DANCEABLE than virtually anything else, and a contemplative piece SADDER than virtually anything else! Autechre are amazing. I even like their new album LOL
I think it depresses me too, but I look at it with a different perspective. It creates this void of a feeling within me. It's a very powerful, incredible track.

Like what keggg said, most people consider it IDM, though I think experimental electronica fits much nicer.
dreamsmadeflesh1 1 year ago
@dreamsmadeflesh1 experimental makes alot more sense than free form :s definitely fits better :)
keggg1234 1 year ago
@keggg1234 Well I get what you mean but I don't like how "experimental" implies that the music is made just as an experiment, not as a work of art...
haha but that sounds way too serious. *enjoys ae*

how come they don't play this in elevators?
Okay, just jokes.
But if they ever get that space-elevator working, I nominate this song to be the MUZAK all the way up...
( ducks for cover...)

@pneumatonic if they'd play this in elevators i would constantly fear of getting stuck along half the way.

@mkayser0 umm, sorry to dissapoint but the first two minutes are straight 4 4...beat and pitched parts.
