for all you bunny huggers, these dogs were bread to be natural hunters, by keeping them as a house pet and not taking them hunting, it's a shame because these dogs love to hunt, that's just what they do. German Shepard protect, Pointers hunt.
I love gsp, we had one for 11 years sadley she had cancer. We tought her all commands in sighn aswell so our voice didnot scair awa any birds/ rabbits etc. she was a star.
Any suggestions on how to make my golden retriever a little "birdier" or how to train her nose a little better? Or is this something that is mostly just bred into them?
@rmgeiger bIRDIER??? No way man, they are just that, a retriever, sit at a shooting peg or a duck ponr thats it, for hunting or pointing get a pointer or setter, or even a flush dog like a springer spaniel or a cocker, they are all round, hunt flush and retrieve!
Your pup can point the wing on a string. Great, now quit using it. It only teaches sight pointing, and your pup needs to learn to hunt with its nose. You will develop problems should you keep using the wing on a string.
not an error. it is their opinion, their decision. why should you care what an owner does with their dog? i have an english pointer without a docked tail and her tail is perfectly fine after hunting. c'mon could you try to be a better human being? i mean don't go around thinking you know everyone. that makes you dumber than the rest of us
haha. well you obviously don't know much about training pointers. and don't try to argue that cause it is clear you don't. the pups are not being forced to do anything. they are just developing their instincts. and they only do it for a min or two. and that "toy" helps them to develop their instincts. there is no punishment here. and how on earth does the mom look sad?? seriously. wagging tail, doggy grin, saying hey to the camera. oh poor dog?
They're pretty big dogs. It's not their physical size that makes them a handful however, it's their athletic build. GSP's are almost pure muscle, very strong dogs. Their endurance is crazy.
very good point, my parents have an english pointer and she's never been trained to point, yet she still does it. It's in the blood, and there's nothing to suggest the dogs don't enjoy it.
dont post stupid fucking comments like that... these pups are doing what they love to do find their prize and point at it... nothing more then my brittany loves more then to be out in the field waiting to point and me shoot his prize.. this is just a step to perfection
Wow SchlockWerks. you are a complete Moron. first off they are not GSP They are English Pointers. and you dont doc there tails. this guy has made Great progress with these pups yes they have a ways to go but they are still young. learn your dogs and dont comment unless you know what you are talking about. just cause daddy took you on 1 hunt when you were 12. doesn't make you a Expert. on Gun dogs.. Im no expert either but i do know the diffarnce in dogs..
Most people on here have no clue. Most notable about the video - it's just wing on a string. Shows that the pups have desire to point - that's instinct. But they're pups - full of energy. That's natural. I'm assumming they don't know a single command. This isn't an excercise to train woah. That being said - there are too many commands given to the pups. Woah & Hold - pick one. Easy - it's a pup - no way. Easy after it knows Woah. Or forget Easy after it knows Woah. Woah means Woah.
you have a nice dog but it is a little im-patient and it might be cuz it wants to go and get the bird before you fling it away again- it is a prettty dog tho!!!!
This video was looking really good until you started to fling that wing around. The poor dogs looks so confused! It might work better if you let her run around and play for a bit, get all that extra energy out, and stop flinging that wing around! If she charges for it, wait for her to calm down, then bring it back.
i just tried this with my dogs with a pheasant wing the boy didn't point much but my little girl did. the boy likes to point at laser pointers tho its weired.
same way i tout my puppy and i thought i was stupid :D

i have a pointer ,the problem is that her nose is always low on the ground and she doesn't wait ,as soon as she points she goes for it.
is there any way to make her point with her nose high?

Also, if you intend to field trial, you want point high, not low. Dogs nose should be in the air, not on the ground.
