Greatest drummer to have ever lived. As jwk stated "swing", somewhat perhaps an outdated concept, but to those who have seen Elvin live in small clubs there can be no doubt as to his genius. smoooooooooth
@sonique25 yo cada vez que veo algo así me deprimo y me cago en sus putas calaveras, jodidos dioses de la música me hacen sentir mal aunque al mismo tiempo me fascinan
I am fortunate that I heard an album of Elvin Jones when I was just 8 years old... since then I haven't stopped listening to him. I am now 67. I am unfortunate that I never heard him live with Coltrane..but I did hear him live at Ronnie Scotts, London 1974. he payed and lived in his own rarefied atmosphere and took us along.. all of us who were fortunat enough to hear him. Navroze Contractor
The greatest drummer I ever saw ... in Soho at the London Jazz Festival around 1990 ... he stumbled getting on stage and everyone thought shit man he can't do this ... but once they sat him behind the drum kit it was fucking amazing ... listen to "India" with the John Coltrane Quartet if you want to hear drumming man ...
I had the pleasure of meeting Elvin in 1993, when I was 17 years old. He was so sweet and gracious with everyone he talked to back stage. When I asked him to take a picture with me, he put is arm around me and said "Of course! After all, there's no time like the present!." I don't play anymore, but I'll never forget his warmth and kindness.
It's funny when you hear young people say Elvin is just hitting whatever. Just shows that fewer people in the newer generations are not studying music. I guess playing 9 over 4 would seem like hitting "whatever" to an untrained ear or even playing over the bar would not work when someone has to hear the "1" everytime. That "1" should be in the heart even when it's not played out. They would have a heart attack if they went to India and heard music over there.
It's just me, probably, but I don't think Elvin was the right fit for Joey, and Joey the right fit for Elvin. Their emotions soared so high and they both enjoyed it, but they felt the music in TWO totally different ways. I'm so used to hearing the post bop combinations of Elvin in his prime with cats like Freddie, Joe Henderson, the Classic Quartet, Richard Davis, Frank Foster, Joe Farrell, etc., and it feels like their fighting each other for which way they want to swing, know what I mean?
Joey is missing a very important note in this tune, which is E flat on the 3rd beat of the 7th bar ( A7 flat 5) . He pays F natural all the time. I know this is a very important note because Dizzy told me when I played it wrong!
Does anyone have or know where to find a decent quality MP3 of this performance? I'm most of the way through transcribing the guitar solo but the mp3 I ripped off this video is poor quality, and through the fast runs at the end of the solo he's playing quite lightly so some notes are a bit lost in the grainyness of the mp3. Love this track. Once I've got the solo down I'll work on the chords. Any help much appreciated :)
Elvin added to the vocabulary of what a musician can do with the drum kit. He's the total package of an artist who pushed the envelope. Many players play with great intelligence, facility and power. Those three factors when combined with swing is what gets my attention. But you cannot teach swing. This must be discovered within. Swing is surrender to the real rhythm of the soul which is joy.
Left hand bass with an occasional pedal as Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and all the other organ greats did. Joey D is a genius and the current master of the Hammond.
elvin was always so free in his playing. nothing mechanical about his drumming. just verry very free. that is what music should do to you. it should set you free.
grrrroink, In response to your question, "Why is Elvin mixed so soft?" He isn't! They're not mixed! They're playing that way on purpose, it's called dynamics and I think that is becoming a lost art.
Alot of dudes can play the drums and I appreciate them.Yet Elvin is obviously on that artistic level which very few can play from.Just look who hes played with.Monster from another planet or universe.
Elvin was already sick at the time of this show. However, he manages to play with all his heart, emotion and technique. Everybody here is a mofo on his own ground - Birelli, DeFrancesco and, of course, the mofo king - Elvin. GBY, Mr Jones, and thank you very much for all the music!
Jazz is great because each artist brings something different to the table. I. E., Jones, Foster, Lagrene, Krantz, Defrancesco, Young. For those who commented previously, what's your dish?
I've seen all the above mentioned guitarist live, and many others, and I bireli is extraordinary in his own right but most of what your saying isn't right. what does the crowd size have to do with the music?
But everything else aside, this performance is outstanding and I am liking bireli's playing a lot, elvin is helping bireli keep his cool for sure
Your uncle Elvin was a great great drummer. An original genius. Nobody played like him. He was perfect for Coltrane and Tyner. I saw him with Trane in Chicago. Played My Favortie Things for 45 minutes. Every tune on John McLaughlin's CD 'After the Rain' with Joey and Elvin is better than this outing. And Hank Jones made Miles' & Cannonball's 'Something Else' one of the great albums of all time. You are part of a very very talented family. I too would be justly proud of the fact.
Elvin was my uncle, If you wanna talk strength, his brother Paul(my grandfather) was 76 when he died, from his 3rd bout of cancer, he still lived on his own, cut his grass, shoveled his own snow when (we would catch him) finished furniture, blah blah blah....uncle Elvin and uncle Thad were strong as hell, but uncle hank is still playn IN HIS 90's!!!!!!!!....
Roy Haynes is 84(!!) and still plays. Unfortunately Elvin left us at 76. But I believe Elvin still played at 76.
And Elvin's brother Hank is 90 years old and still plays piano at Jazz Festivals.
That's all amazing! Not saying that 72 is an unbelievable age for a musician. But we're talking about Elvin. He always looked physically strong, so I wasn't too shocked by his age because he looks so vital that he doesn't even look like a 72-year old man.
I was not shocked at the fact that a 72 year old man was capable of playing the drums. As you mentioned, Roy Haynes has been playing more than a decade longer than Elvin did and is still going strong. However, the power Elvin is putting into his playing here is incredible. Just look at 8:50!
I saw Elvin play in Cambridge, MA just 4-5 weeks before his death. He had lost some of his enormous strength but his soul was still there. It made me realize that the most important thing a drummer or any musician can have is soul. Elvin was essentially in the process of dying but he still swung and you could feel his passion/soul. I think there is a lesson for all those kids who post about technique and fastest this and that. I suppose though that concept requires maturity and wisdom.
Yes, slow is fast. A wheel can spin so fast that it actually looks to slow down and go reverse. Space is another instrument. These kids don't know how to play "the space". So the fill it up with all these complex patterns and tricks. Space is where your soul expands out into the music. Yes, the soul of a man is the true drummer. Not the hands and feet. The soul has to shine through the music. And that as you say takes many moons to learn. Good comment thanks!
I like your wheel analogy. I have often thought of life as expansionism of principles, laws etc. People often try to escape the basic truth, often trying to break the rules without learning them first.
I agree - I was there for those shows as well. Note that Elvin had a huge smile on his face the whole show, even though he could probably barely speak
@qwerly45 i played a high school arrangement of this song......it pales in comparison the melody was there but i wish at the time i could understand and properly produce the intricate nuances and complex rhythms in this song
I don't know exactly. All I know is that one year time was a remarkable difference for Elvin. I saw him in 2003 and although he was a tad slower than 2002 (where he was on FIRE), he was still great. Spring of 2004 was completely different. Still, Elvin was brave and he played a beautiful set, although, it was very mellow.
This video is from a special program dedicated to Elvin Jones in the Marciac Jazz Festival in 1998. They also play a wonderful version of Straight no Chaser by Thelonius Monk wow!!!
I have the whole show recorded on VHS and I can't release it here :( if someone has it really get my congratulations ...
Elvin is my favorite drummer of all time. He has such a delicately bombastic style that is just undeniably him. I was lucky enough to meet him at NAMM a few years ago and I told him how I spent my lunch money in junior high on his records to try and steal his style. He was gracious, it was overwhelming to meet him.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Nah. Great, but I wouldn't go that far. I guess it could depond on your age and if you've been in a boring relationship for a long time.
If you said to me right now, there are two choices: sleep with this model here or listen to this you tube clip, I would choose the model straight away...

Nah. Great, but I wouldn't go that far. I guess it could depond on your age and if you've been in a boring relationship for a long time.
If you said to me right now, there are two choices: sleep with this model here or listen to this you tube clip, I would choose the model straight away...
Well that's me...
