  • Mr. Jones you are sooo... deep in that pocket; you're surrounded in LINT

  • Why is Chumlee from Pawn Stars playing guitar for Elvin Jones?

  • shame the white boys weren't listening at the start?

  • All Star Line Up!!! Ive heard Joey DeFrancesco live twice with Steve Gadd!

  • i had the honor of seeing Elvin play an hour set at hart plaza in the D....I'll take Elvin over Royster any day

  • Wonderful !

    Thanks

  • Like melting butter, this spreads all through the ears.

  • A sensational Jazz classic performed by the best

  • Powerful !

    Thanks

  • This is the first time I have ever seen my great uncle play. AWESOME!!!!

  • Love Elvin! He plays with what seems like such violence, at times it's as if he's trying to play the bottom drum head from the top side.

  • Greatest drummer to have ever lived. As jwk stated "swing", somewhat perhaps an outdated concept, but to those who have seen Elvin live in small clubs there can be no doubt as to his genius. smoooooooooth

  • これはいつの頃?~まあいいか~神がさずけたドラマーには違いない~エルビン・ジョーンズ~ごきげん"チュニジアの夜" #jazzm

  • Fantastic drum work. For this type of music Elvin Jones is one of the best, and one of my favorites...

..But is it just me or does that keyboardist look like Chumlee from Pawn Stars..?

  • i <3 elvin

thank goodness for your recordings, i can still feel your vibe, anytime i need...

    blessed be

  • I am fortunate that I heard an album of Elvin Jones when I was just 8 years old... since then I haven't stopped listening to him. I am now 67. I am unfortunate that I never heard him live with Coltrane..but I did hear him live at Ronnie Scotts, London 1974. he payed and lived in his own rarefied atmosphere and took us along.. all of us who were fortunat enough to hear him. Navroze Contractor

  • If it was any cooler, I think I'd burst into flames. BADASS.

  • The people who hit the 'dislikes' just plain Suck Ass !

  • this neeedddsss sax. some charlie love

  • This is God's drummer

  • fucking pianist and his fucking retarded smile.

  • Birelli and Joey are good but Elvin outclasses them! He is definitely a king of drums!

  • Damn this fool is killin it! Just like BR!

  • The greatest drummer I ever saw ... in Soho at the London Jazz Festival around 1990 ... he stumbled getting on stage and everyone thought shit man he can't do this ... but once they sat him behind the drum kit it was fucking amazing ... listen to "India" with the John Coltrane Quartet if you want to hear drumming man ...

  • ahhhh that little roll out at the end of the drum solo was so smooth it was beyond cool, it was....... sublime

  • kul senin elvin basina adimi batirdin essek oglu essek

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Elvin in 1993, when I was 17 years old. He was so sweet and gracious with everyone he talked to back stage. When I asked him to take a picture with me, he put is arm around me and said "Of course! After all, there's no time like the present!." I don't play anymore, but I'll never forget his warmth and kindness.

  • @fmnjr He did the same to me...in 1987

(Posted by Youtube Stream for iPhone (yst.me) on behalf of daykazu at twitter)

  • +++++++ videos del mismo concert please!

  • como hago para ver los de mas capo manda un links thank you

  • It's funny when you hear young people say Elvin is just hitting whatever. Just shows that fewer people in the newer generations are not studying music. I guess playing 9 over 4 would seem like hitting "whatever" to an untrained ear or even playing over the bar would not work when someone has to hear the "1" everytime. That "1" should be in the heart even when it's not played out. They would have a heart attack if they went to India and heard music over there.

  • It's just me, probably, but I don't think Elvin was the right fit for Joey, and Joey the right fit for Elvin. Their emotions soared so high and they both enjoyed it, but they felt the music in TWO totally different ways. I'm so used to hearing the post bop combinations of Elvin in his prime with cats like Freddie, Joe Henderson, the Classic Quartet, Richard Davis, Frank Foster, Joe Farrell, etc., and it feels like their fighting each other for which way they want to swing, know what I mean?

  • Joey is missing a very important note in this tune, which is E flat on the 3rd beat of the 7th bar ( A7 flat 5) . He pays F natural all the time. I know this is a very important note because Dizzy told me when I played it wrong!

  • Elvin is forever one of the beautiful cats! RIP E.J.

  • He's crying.

  • Is that Chumlee on keys?

  • Does anyone have or know where to find a decent quality MP3 of this performance? I'm most of the way through transcribing the guitar solo but the mp3 I ripped off this video is poor quality, and through the fast runs at the end of the solo he's playing quite lightly so some notes are a bit lost in the grainyness of the mp3. Love this track. Once I've got the solo down I'll work on the chords. Any help much appreciated :)

  • @surfer919193 Learn the chords First!

  • so sad for the actual troubles that happened in Tunisia

  • half way through the music started having sex with my brain... this music is amazing.

  • Film quality is stunnning

  • 0:54 I think the organist was playing with his organ

  • Elvin added to the vocabulary of what a musician can do with the drum kit. He's the total package of an artist who pushed the envelope. Many players play with great intelligence, facility and power. Those three factors when combined with swing is what gets my attention. But you cannot teach swing. This must be discovered within. Swing is surrender to the real rhythm of the soul which is joy.

  • @jwklbm326 True words indeed and phenomenally well said, I might add!!!

  • yeah joey d's a legend

    great combo

  • Left hand bass with an occasional pedal as Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and all the other organ greats did. Joey D is a genius and the current master of the Hammond.

  • is the organist playing the bass parts on pedals?

    - if so, he's a pretty economical band member - keys, bass and soloist all for the price of one guy1 :-)

  • Beast line up. Elvin Jones AND Bireli Lagrene?!?!?! I surprised the world didn't end during this performance

  • Lovin the way he hits that cymbal at the end, sums up the attitude in his playing beautifully.

  • Bireli sounds unwell in this.

  • @limaktba he sounds filthy. filthy awesome.

  • elvin was always so free in his playing. nothing mechanical about his drumming. just verry very free. that is what music should do to you. it should set you free.

  • search: Amorphic drum ...( 1st video result ).

    what technique is this??

  • That was really special! I love Bireli and Joey but wish I could have seen and met Elvin before he passed.

  • Do you know why he sweats so much? He makes sure that every note is played as its supposed to be, and with this instrument, there's a lot of notes

  • Where is his Bassdrum, i see only the pole for the toms.

  • @300869qwr

Check out : 7:40 - when the camera swings in past the organ, you'll see the Bass Drum clearly.

You can't see it so well from the front, probably because it has a black head on.

The Bass Drum is definitely evident in his playing, which is as usual, full of poly-rhythmical power triplets and ( single Bass Drum! ) quad figures.

  • I really do miss this LEGEND

  • drumming starts and stops with Elvin. (PbUH.)

  • Alot of dudes can play the drums and I appreciate them.Yet Elvin is obviously on that artistic level which very few can play from.Just look who hes played with.Monster from another planet or universe.

  • did they do a recording with this trio?

Elvin is so behind the beat! Its a beautiful thing!!

  • Why is Elvin mixed so soft?

  • Elvin

  • i am so inspired....this is how the drums are to be played...JAZZ OR DIE!!!

  • Elvin was already sick at the time of this show. However, he manages to play with all his heart, emotion and technique. Everybody here is a mofo on his own ground - Birelli, DeFrancesco and, of course, the mofo king - Elvin. GBY, Mr Jones, and thank you very much for all the music!

  • Johnnylance you dont know a damn thing about jazz or good players when you hear them you ignorant dumbass

  • @ChubbyBallz9; Another great example of the lowest common denominator...

Great comment! How many days did it take you to formulate that statement?

  • Jazz is great because each artist brings something different to the table. I. E., Jones, Foster, Lagrene, Krantz, Defrancesco, Young. For those who commented previously, what's your dish?

  • Elvin Jones man...one of the greatest!

  • Comment removed

  • Music isn't a sport and opinion is subjective.....Birelli is bad!!!! So are the other cats as well...jazz is hard to play well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's difficult to name a better guitar player...

  • I can name three....

    Wes Montgomery

    Peter Bernstein

    Kurt Rosenwinkel

  • None of these guys ever played so freely in front of such large audiences, ever. Wes Montgomery was great, the other two are techno fiddlers.

  • I've seen all the above mentioned guitarist live, and many others, and I bireli is extraordinary in his own right but most of what your saying isn't right. what does the crowd size have to do with the music?

But everything else aside, this performance is outstanding and I am liking bireli's playing a lot, elvin is helping bireli keep his cool for sure

  • The performance is everything.

  • in my opinon the third best jazz player ever

  • I think Bireli plays too kinesthetically sometimes

  • At 0:46 Joey quotes a line from Larry Young's album "Unity", on which Elvin played. He was a force of nature.

  • missing a nice bass line underneath

but good vid elvin jones one of the best ever

  • I love Elvin.

I always feel love and the energy that he gives.

  • about as bad, as in good, that it could possibly be.

  • Man, the way he toyed with rhythm in this was like the way Sinatra would play with melody when he was riffing on songs. Made it look so easy, too.

  • uncle, great uncle sorry*!!!

  • Your uncle Elvin was a great great drummer. An original genius. Nobody played like him. He was perfect for Coltrane and Tyner. I saw him with Trane in Chicago. Played My Favortie Things for 45 minutes. Every tune on John McLaughlin's CD 'After the Rain' with Joey and Elvin is better than this outing. And Hank Jones made Miles' & Cannonball's 'Something Else' one of the great albums of all time. You are part of a very very talented family. I too would be justly proud of the fact.

  • Elvin was my uncle, If you wanna talk strength, his brother Paul(my grandfather) was 76 when he died, from his 3rd bout of cancer, he still lived on his own, cut his grass, shoveled his own snow when (we would catch him) finished furniture, blah blah blah....uncle Elvin and uncle Thad were strong as hell, but uncle hank is still playn IN HIS 90's!!!!!!!!....

  • You unle was THE BEST!

    All Respect!

  • If Elvin was your grandfather's brother, he would be your GREAT uncle.

  • yep saw him in montreal last year, amazing player!

  • @mikealberice

last year? elvin died in 2004...

  • oh no his brother the piano player

  • Bireles' solo is bloody beautiful. Brief, elegant and it says it all. The guy can play anything.

  • I've mostly heard Bireli playing in the gypsy style but YES he can play anything! This solo was very bluesy!

  • Joey D! He's my favorite!

  • this is very special !

  • GOOD music. thanks!

  • i didnt know Kevin Smith played keys!

  • The organist is Joey DeFrancesco and the guitarist is Mariac Sweet

  • no marciac sweet is the festival im sure the guitarist is Bireli Lagrene

  • Elvin was not only a great drummer but also a great composer and band leader. WOW!!!

  • Dig it ♫♫♫♫♫

  • If anyone has any doubts about how good Bireli really is;

    Listen to this...

    A few choice bars ...!!!

  • Geez....the guy was 72 when he did this. Amazing.

  • Roy Haynes is 84(!!) and still plays. Unfortunately Elvin left us at 76. But I believe Elvin still played at 76.

And Elvin's brother Hank is 90 years old and still plays piano at Jazz Festivals.

That's all amazing! Not saying that 72 is an unbelievable age for a musician. But we're talking about Elvin. He always looked physically strong, so I wasn't too shocked by his age because he looks so vital that he doesn't even look like a 72-year old man.

  • I was not shocked at the fact that a 72 year old man was capable of playing the drums. As you mentioned, Roy Haynes has been playing more than a decade longer than Elvin did and is still going strong. However, the power Elvin is putting into his playing here is incredible. Just look at 8:50!

  • I saw Elvin play in Cambridge, MA just 4-5 weeks before his death. He had lost some of his enormous strength but his soul was still there. It made me realize that the most important thing a drummer or any musician can have is soul. Elvin was essentially in the process of dying but he still swung and you could feel his passion/soul. I think there is a lesson for all those kids who post about technique and fastest this and that. I suppose though that concept requires maturity and wisdom.

  • Yes, slow is fast. A wheel can spin so fast that it actually looks to slow down and go reverse. Space is another instrument. These kids don't know how to play "the space". So the fill it up with all these complex patterns and tricks. Space is where your soul expands out into the music. Yes, the soul of a man is the true drummer. Not the hands and feet. The soul has to shine through the music. And that as you say takes many moons to learn. Good comment thanks!

  • @tfw23

I like your wheel analogy. I have often thought of life as expansionism of principles, laws etc. People often try to escape the basic truth, often trying to break the rules without learning them first.

  • @tfw23 well said

  • @tfw23 That my friend ...... IS SO F*****G TRUE

  • @tfw23

    True dat

  • @tfw23 Deep observation!

  • I agree - I was there for those shows as well. Note that Elvin had a huge smile on his face the whole show, even though he could probably barely speak

  • but why? I'm new to the subject so excuse my lack of knowledge

  • This is pretty technical. Jazz is a technical genre. I know what you mean though. Technicality means jack unless you have soul to accompany it.

  • @qwerly45 i played a high school arrangement of this song......it pales in comparison the melody was there but i wish at the time i could understand and properly produce the intricate nuances and complex rhythms in this song

  • @drummer78 you're right right right right!!!!!!!

  • @drummer78 When does the process of dying start?

  • I don't know exactly. All I know is that one year time was a remarkable difference for Elvin. I saw him in 2003 and although he was a tad slower than 2002 (where he was on FIRE), he was still great. Spring of 2004 was completely different. Still, Elvin was brave and he played a beautiful set, although, it was very mellow.

  • @drummer78 Interesting. I saw him in Tokyo in 2002 and it was intense. But I had nothing to compare it to. Peace.

  • @limaktba the day we're born

  • @drummer78 GREAT WORDS : ABSOLUTELY AGREE . thanks

  • Where can i get this DVD? anyone?

  • i also want but from where?

  • Comment removed

I have the whole show recorded on VHS and I can't release it here :( if someone has it really get my congratulations ...

    Viva el Jazz

  • Elvin is my favorite drummer of all time. He has such a delicately bombastic style that is just undeniably him. I was lucky enough to meet him at NAMM a few years ago and I told him how I spent my lunch money in junior high on his records to try and steal his style. He was gracious, it was overwhelming to meet him.

  • man also he's playing punk-rock on his solo, lol, only jazz drummer like that is him!!

  • he came first so punk rock is taking from him.

    learn your chronology

  • er ok if you say so...

  • Great point Viper28087!!

    He was so fantastic!!

It's great that you are e a elvin fan like me!

  • beautiful, elvin has the most positive vibe...

  • Who is the organ player?

  • Joey DeFrancesco - He's pretty cool...

  • Joey Defrancesco

  • If you are a musician and elvin jones calls and says will you play a set with me? you crap your pants and drop the phone

    a legend

  • What's your context here? When did that happen to someone?

  • figuratively genius

  • what video is this from? the bit at the beginning looks like an interview.
