  • Do you have to remove the capacitor from the board first?

  • @pitchwest it's the only way to check a capacitor. (or was it a resistor that needs to be off the board?) i'm having doubts myself now :d (my excuse, i never learnt this shit, just saw a couple videos :-) ) i think it's the resistor, you need to place that on the positive wire (cut the wire in half and place the resistor between it in order to check it's values, right?)

  • @ipponsuki i think more likely... Singaporean.

  • If you unsolder the capacitor from board - it is easier and more reliable to trow it to the garbage bin and solder new one.

  • How to check a 400v Capaciator: Just lick it, if you survive .. the cap is empty

  • Please help me, i have a motherboard and one of the capacitors is starting to bulge, is it okay to be used?

  • @3Target33 No. Visit badcaps dot net

  • @stiv2k Thanks!

  • @3Target33

If you see a bulge or a split on a cap it's a sign that the cap is leaking rule of thumb change it and remember always get the same micro farad cap you can use a higher voltage rating but always use the correct micro farad :-)

  • @bondys123 Thank you, sir

  • Hi i have changed my capacitors as my samsung lcd tv keeps clicking on and off i was just wondering what else you think can go wrong with them if you could help thanks alot i just dont know what to do and its bugging me now thanks alot

  • @Ladylora24 In this case you have to change the power supply. The Capacitor is usually a solution to a monitor that does not turn on as fast or does not turn on at all. All other cases is the problem of a power supply and not much can be done there because so many different things may be wrong in vast array of components.

Also checking capacitors like he has isn't the way to go -- only because it shows a capacitance doesn't mean it doesn't 'leak'.

  • what kinda tester are you using???

  • Wait. This guy even has a BOOK? Why are the Chinese are so fuckin' smart ???!!!

  • @TheEgg185

    I think he is Korean.

  • @TheEgg185 they just want to learn everything!!! lol im chinese too and i just like learning more about stuff like this

  • that was well explained

  • Why you giv away my achent chinee secret huh! YOU GO AWAY WIAT IN CAR HUH/? COK SUKER

  • Any ather way with out capacitormeter?

  • Great video. Is it possible to check a capacitor whilst it's still on the board? Thanks

  • @DJPaulgee1 -at least one lead has to be disconnected ,the other can stay on the board.

  • @DJPaulgee1

You can sometimes test in-circuit using an ESR meter. However, if there are multiple capacitors in parallel then that will interfere with the reading.

  • @walkergruen It's a desoldering gun. You push the spring loaded top all the way down until it locks, and then you place the end of the gun up against the solder then push a small button on the side of the gun to release it. As it releases, it causes suction inside the gun and then it sucks up the solder from the board. The solder has to be softened for it to work.

  • Nice video. Very educational

  • tsing tsong tseng capacitaor

  • Can someone help with a tech question:

I gave my Rotel RA-971 for repair, it right side gave no outpu at all. There were several corroded green contacts and I asked them to renew them.

It came back to me working but the green contacts were still the same and I didn`t notice any inside change in the parts.

How common/routine it is for technicial to renew such contacts and what are the consequences if they don`t. The shop also refused to inform me of what was the prolem all about.

    Any advice pls.

  • Glad I watched this, I never would have thought to remove the capacitor and test it using a capacitance meter.

  • i now only us a esr atlas

  • @animalcorvair I bought one of those recently, how do you know that the ESR is at an acceptable level for any given Capacitor you test? And if a Capacitor is at about 100uF and it reads at 95uF is that drop of 5uF mean that the Cap is ok?.

  • @blade004 u want a very low esr .02-.05 an a 100uf showing 95 will still be ok if esr is low an not leaky my monitor had a bad cap that had a 1.9 esr leaky ..get good caps 105 c hope this helped you

  • @animalcorvair So any Capacitor about .05 is potentially a leaky capacitor regardless of whether its a Filter Capacitor or not? (as you know, they are much larger physically). And yes your information thus far is VERY helpful, thank you!! :)

  • @blade004 i would change all in the power suppy of a tv or monitor ,,on tube type .radioes high esr would not hurt only shorted or leaky ones the new power suppys cant stand high esr i just used .03 -.05 as an example..most new low esr caps run around that ..hope that helps using an ohm meter will not help in new tvs an monitors ..like the old days hope this helps

  • @animalcorvair Fantastic! Thank you so much mate, your information is invaluable for which answers many of my questions :) I really do appreciate it!

  • @animalcorvair What i meant was -:

So any Capacitor "above" .05 is potentially a leaky capacitor regardless of whether its a Filter Capacitor or not?

  • It's worth checking whether removing one capacitor breaks the circuit others are on. This would mean that they can be tested without removing them.

  • Can a capasitor be tested on the board?

  • @hybreed13 Hi I was wondering can you use any general purpose multimeter to test a capacitor or does it has to be a special type of meter? Also can a multimeter with diode test, resistance, Capacitance test for all electronic components like, Transistor, Diode, Resistor, Capacitor, IC, LED etc..?

    Thanks

  • Hi can check the capacitance of that capacitor even without desoldering it from the board?

  • what kind of solder remover are you using?

  • oh man not you again!

  • how do u know the size of the "micro farad" on the capacitor?

    thank you

  • @MVLINEMAN its typically written in small print on one side of it. other than that you can't really tell. different size doesn't mean different level of capacitance. sometimes but rarely are there color bands on capacitors. google links you to a couple different sites that have what each color means.

  • thanks hybreed13 very usefull video !

    ciao

  • How did u undersold that so quickly :O

  • hybreed13 ur right although in jamaica we know it by a different name " saldier plunger , saldier sucker " funny and corny i know i know but hey we both know what we are talking about non the less

  • The capacitance may still be in range, but you need to check the leakage/ESR/ESL also, especially in switch mode power supplies.

If in question, just replace it. Caps are cheap, and a common fault.

  • that has to be the coolest solder remover ever... where can i get one? and that compasiter tester??

  • ahhhhh.... but this doesn't check for leakage.

  • @walkergruen Solder sucker.

  • yes my grasshopper

  • maaaaan, I used to do that stuff, too!

  • Is there any possibility for a bad capacitor in electronics from 1978? And how about electronics from 1987?

  • Comment removed

  • @rocarolan2003 Careful? I could guess smoothing capacitors are the first to dry, but the other capacitors?

  • @Riskteven If they're that old than there is a pretty good chance they're done

  • @JDTV1995 That old? You mean for 1974? I am not sure but I have seen equipment from the 70s still working...

  • @Riskteven a lot still do work if not used a ton, or they may have been replaced at one time

  • HI..can I replace cap with 68uF 450v with 100uF 450v..is there any possible problem with that??Thanks.

  • @pol00 If it is on a camera flash for example, it will take longer to charge, if it is on a car stereo system, the bass line will be more pure..that's the only side effect...just be aware not to use superior voltages than the ones indicated on the capacitor.

  • @walkergruen Its called soldier sucker..

  • Hey yo, and what about discharging the capacitor? Many meter will blow up if you dont do that, right?

  • @walkergruen

That is a soldier remover mate

  • @hybreed13 Can you tell us the Manufacturer and model of that solder remover? That thing is awesome

  • @hybreed13 He means Solder remover

  • Should test ESR too.

  • wat book waer can i gat it

  • @stvensonnathanael

You can get the book via the clicky link in description, sorry the link was not working for a while but it is now. :-)

  • how check TDA7377 chip?

  • no you dont have to removed the cap you can check it on the board with the capa check plus911 is a very good tool to have and you can find it on ebay capa check plus 911 is made in argentina

  • This was asked before but not answered (that I saw) so I ask... Do you have to remove the cap from the circuit to test it?

  • @zer0dahero: Yes, you do have to remove the capacitor from the circuit board. If you don't, you will end up testing the capacitance of the whole circuit (not just the cap), and since the meter is using its own voltage to test the cap, that test voltage can fry other components in the circuit.

  • @SteelWheelsDown That makes perfect sence now. Thank you.

  • What soldering iron is best? (the one you have looks good to me)

  • How to test capacitors

  • i like staright talking engineers!!!!!

  • Check out "How to test capacitors part 1 "-- no nonsense

  • What's that thing called you use to take out the capacitor? I know one of them is a solder, but what's that long blue thing called? Thanks

  • @timlyg It's a desoldering tool. I sucks or vacuums up the liquid solder and removes it from the board and connection.

  • the meter wont verify esr and if you have the old part out its time to solder in a new one

  • Do I always need to take the cap out? That's a lot of work :(

  • thank you mr miagi

  • can you test a capacitor without taking it out of the circuit?

  • @xxmannylee1992xx Yes with an ESR meter you can test while in circuit, but not with circuit energized and with cap discharged.

  • that not a multimeter-that's a capacitence meter!

  • LCR meter too.

  • What's that toy you use in 0:15 please, I'v never seen that, is it pushing stuff using the air or what? Great video thanks.

  • @iRouRoui that is a desoldering pump, they really cheap, that thing sucks air

  • that's to get the tin out...you can buy it at any electronic store..

  • you need to charge it and test it right away and will show power droping down

  • No capacitors can't be checked on the board and this capicitor test does not show you if the capacitor can hold a charge!!!!!!

  • @k3v1av thanks, i was looking for this answer a long time..

  • Can Capacitors be checked while still on the board?

  • What is your de-soldering tool?

    Thanks :)

  • is your book available in local bookstore here in Philippines?

  • Wow, nice desoldering skills.

  • Your esr meter has a bunch of settings, you set yours at 2000, question is how did you know to set it on 2000 and not one of the other settings?

  • Always make it a habit to discharge it first.
