I just bought the DVD. Good movie and amazing how close they came to employing operation valkyrie. Cruise was a bit of a distraction. Whenever he was on screen I kept thinking about him in Top Gun,

I saw this movie because I love and respect Bryan Singer - talented director. "Valkyrie" was ok but I didn't feel the atmosphere of that period in our history. "Enemy at the Gates" (2001) and "Black Book" (2006) were much better films. I actually enjoyed Tom Cruise's performance but he did not take the lead as strongly as he should have. His non-German accent was not an issue it was the strength that he displayed in his performance that was disappointing to many. The supporting cast was superb

What's all this about the July 20th plot being 'little known'? It's well documented in numerous books, I'd suggest the Ian Kershaw Hitler Biog which goes into it in very considerable detail.

I am not at all troubled by the lack of German accents. Doctor Zhivago is an excellent movie about Russia and yet the actors do not have Russian accents. Some of the actors sound English, because they are.
This is a powerful movie. I watched the whole thing last night on the DVD I purchased and was deeply moved. What heroes. When others were afraid to try to confront real evil, at least those people tried.
That's why still today new conscripts of the Bundeswehr are put under oath on the day Stauffenberg and Co. were excecuted. They also used to be sworn in in Bendlerblock, the place the execution happened (the court inside today's Ministery of Defence), but they changed the place some years ago so it takes place now in front of parliament, more in the public, to emphasise it's a parlamentarian army. They have to swear by the constitution. Back in war they sweared by Hitler himself!

In the end waiting to be executed, watching the people who once stood beside you, who you knew for years be shot and killed with in seconds then dragged away. Knowing that would be you soon.

I couldn't sit though the first 30 minutes of this rubbish!.. For some reason all the German Nazis are speaking perfect English AND have American accents! This movie is extremity dumbed down for American audiences and grossly inaccurate, I found it to be INCREDIBLY insulting!
I never understood why they do that in movies. Not having accents and then speaking English in totally non English speaking countries/periods of time. It kinda ruins the realism and you can't get that involved in the movie.

The only bad thing about this movie is the fact people already know how it ends.
Even with that being said, it will get you to sympathize with the characters, observe every frame, listen every sound, every line from the credits till the very end. These days, that's very rare in movies, even those you don't know the ending. And that's saying something.
If you dislike Tom Cruise, let him slide. I give you my word, you will not be disappointed by his performance and this movie.

Stauffenberg was no hero, he was a murderer same as Hitler. As Stauffenberg noticed Germany was going to lose the War soon, he wanted to defeat Hitler and help his country beat Europe. None like it's said that he had some soldier's and moral feelings.

I wouldn't go that far. Still, I like Henning von Tresckow and Hans Oster more likable than Stauffenberg for that reason. Oster revealed invasion date to Netherlands before Western campaign and rescued Jews from deportation. Tresckow began to plot against Nazis at latest by September 1941 in response to Nazi holocaust. Now, neither of them were true democrats, but I think one can still admire what is admirable. It takes guts to try to kill Hitler.
BTW, it is outright false to claim tht he wanted to beat Europe after deposing Hitler. He wanted to preseve pre-war German border, which is wrong obviously, but ending the war was paramount concern for him.
Besides, by July 20, 1944, anyone with brain knew that Germany lost all bargaining chips. Allies would not negotiate with post-Hitler regime, so there was no political purpose to be served with the coup. It really was to end war and stop senseless deaths.
That's certainly not true for Tresckow and Stauffenberg. Tresckow planned to kill Hitler already in autumn 1941 - because of the Nazi mass murders especially of the Jews - when the German army was on the advance. And Stauffenberg declared he was ready to kill Hitler in September 1942 - well before the defeat of Stalingrad.
The director Bryan Singer - by the way jewish - has very intensely studied the facts before making the film. I recommend to read Wikipedia (and other sources).
I haven't seen Valkyrie so far, unfortunately, so I can't judge this.
But here in the cinemas it is in German anyway, so this won't be a problem for us ^^. I watched Downfall (Der Untergang) though and I agree with you.
At least many Germans complained that Hollywood makes a movie about our past and feared this one could become a typical Hollywood-epic, far from reality. As far as i have heard it didn't.
At least also many foreigners get to know the story about Stauffenberg now.
Enjoyed this film and the acting was great. However, it does not really mention what kind of future for Germany these resistance members wanted. They of course despised Hitler, yet many were militarist conservatives who wanted 1914 borders retained under truce with the west. While i sympathise with their aims generally, it is important to realise that just because they opposed Hitler they were not all happy clappy 21st century libertarians!
but at least a murder of hitler in 1944 could have saved so many lives! if i remember right, in the last year of war as many people died as in all the years before together!

I like how the actors look similar to the characters their playing. to feel like its the real thing.
Their failing to kill Hitler wasn't their fault. If the guy didn't move the bag on the otherside of the table leg he would've died.
In the end waiting to be executed, watching the people who once stood beside you, who you knew for years be shot and killed with in seconds then dragged away. Knowing that would be you soon.
Its a scary thought and the world is a scary place.

I couldn't sit though the first 30 minutes of this rubbish!.. For some reason all the German Nazis are speaking perfect English AND have American accents! This movie is extremity dumbed down for American audiences and grossly inaccurate, I found it to be INCREDIBLY insulting!

I never understood why they do that in movies. Not having accents and then speaking English in totally non English speaking countries/periods of time. It kinda ruins the realism and you can't get that involved in the movie.

But for the longest time before that I was REALLY confused because I didnt recall anything from history about Americans fighting for Nazi Germans in WW2! Then I finely realized that theyre not supposed to really be Americans at all!! WHAT THE FUCK!?

According to those who know the story the movie is remarkably accurate.
And yes, the dialogue is in English - it's an American movie for American audiences so obviously it's English. I would much rather hear their normal speaking voices than try some stupid sounding fake German accent. There is a dubbed version if you must have German.

The only bad thing about this movie is the fact people already know how it ends.
Even with that being said, it will get you to sympathize with the characters, observe every frame, listen every sound, every line from the credits till the very end. These days, that's very rare in movies, even those you don't know the ending. And that's saying something.
If you dislike Tom Cruise, let him slide. I give you my word, you will not be disappointed by his performance and this movie.

oh yeah I remember they where filming some scenes near my house in Pasadena,CA in this church named "westminster prespiterian" on Lake ave... But I was not a big fan of Tom cruise to go look for him :(

The movie is one big lie!
Stauffenberg was no hero, he was a murderer same as Hitler. As Stauffenberg noticed Germany was going to lose the War soon, he wanted to defeat Hitler and help his country beat Europe. None like it's said that he had some soldier's and moral feelings.
Criminalist like all the other SS-men at the times.
Pitty there was such commercial, fictious movie produced...

I wouldn't go that far. Still, I like Henning von Tresckow and Hans Oster more likable than Stauffenberg for that reason. Oster revealed invasion date to Netherlands before Western campaign and rescued Jews from deportation. Tresckow began to plot against Nazis at latest by September 1941 in response to Nazi holocaust. Now, neither of them were true democrats, but I think one can still admire what is admirable. It takes guts to try to kill Hitler.

BTW, it is outright false to claim tht he wanted to beat Europe after deposing Hitler. He wanted to preseve pre-war German border, which is wrong obviously, but ending the war was paramount concern for him.

Besides, by July 20, 1944, anyone with brain knew that Germany lost all bargaining chips. Allies would not negotiate with post-Hitler regime, so there was no political purpose to be served with the coup. It really was to end war and stop senseless deaths.

That's certainly not true for Tresckow and Stauffenberg. Tresckow planned to kill Hitler already in autumn 1941 - because of the Nazi mass murders especially of the Jews - when the German army was on the advance. And Stauffenberg declared he was ready to kill Hitler in September 1942 - well before the defeat of Stalingrad.
The director Bryan Singer - by the way jewish - has very intensely studied the facts before making the film. I recommend to read Wikipedia (and other sources).

I haven't seen Valkyrie so far, unfortunately, so I can't judge this.
But here in the cinemas it is in German anyway, so this won't be a problem for us ^^. I watched Downfall (Der Untergang) though and I agree with you.
At least many Germans complained that Hollywood makes a movie about our past and feared this one could become a typical Hollywood-epic, far from reality. As far as i have heard it didn't.
At least also many foreigners get to know the story about Stauffenberg now.

Enjoyed this film and the acting was great. However, it does not really mention what kind of future for Germany these resistance members wanted. They of course despised Hitler, yet many were militarist conservatives who wanted 1914 borders retained under truce with the west. While i sympathise with their aims generally, it is important to realise that just because they opposed Hitler they were not all happy clappy 21st century libertarians!

there is one advantage of the real outcome of this. we don't know what germany would look like today if it hadn't been defeated destructively. so maybe a less evil dictatorship had followed. as a german i am happy in our today's germany!

What Hilter did was really over the top. In that world that has gone mad. It's rather heartening to see that there are sane people around even in the Nazis.

Ich fand Tom Cruise schon immer Scheiße in all seinen Filmen (arrogant und überheblich). Auch bevor heraus kam das er ein Superstar in dieser tollen Sekte war. Mit diesen Film hat er den Vogel abgeschossen!! Es passt nicht!!! Der Film ist nur auf Action ausgelegt und wiederspricht der Wahrheit. Naja wer weiß was der Herr Tom damit bezwecken wollte!!

it was a courageous and noble act by Stauffenberg and his group, but quite late.
There was a plot to kill Hitler in 1939 - which failed by 10 Minutes -carried out by a single man (Elser). On that evening it was foggy in Munich, so Hitler could not fly back to Berlin and instead returned earlier with the night train. Pure bad luck: I guess with Hitler dead so early in the war there would have been no war with Russia and no Holocaust - a completely different course of history.

Yes, the SS - but the regular army ("Wehrmacht") was heterogenous: some ardent Nazis, many careerists who followed any order, but also many traditional officers who disliked or despised the Nazis and their heinous crimes. I guess not only fear, but also group pressure (the "oath","We cannot foul our own nest") often
prevented resistance.
Tresckow even asked Manstein and other field marshals to help topple Hitler: They did not betray him, but
refused - probably fearing for their career.

Look up "German Resistance" on Wikipedia. There has been Nazi opposition to Hitler since before World War II. The German Nazi Party was an honest political group until Hitler took over.
