This guy got extremely lucky. The concept of having a IP daemon running, and a remote access method seems smart. There are many secure options available, personally I use LogMeIn which will allow me to remotely wake the computer and connect to it regardless of router configuration. It would be interesting to see An IP daemon implemented at the BIOS level, this way theft recovery could occur even if the machine was wiped.

In two years, this is probably the fifth person in possession of this machine. And now his docs are posted when he could be completely innocent.

Before then, your computer would have a modem installed and you'd connect the modem to the telephone line, and the computer would be doing the work of connecting to the Internet itself, and the outside world had full access. That's how the person with the laptop was able to get online even though the IP settings were locked; the IP settings were for the network connection, but this was using a modem.
