Almost three minutes of Sheer Heaven. DG should go on the road with a brass section and choir. Please DG .... it's not self-indulgence when thousands would die to see and hear it. We never fell out of love with AHM even if you guys did .
@tjrtherocksponge It's almost the same thing I've said. DG was playing a prototype of the Black Strat Signature coming from Fender Custom Shop. I'm quite sure since Phil Taylor told me what kind of black strat was actually.
Surprising. I recall David Gilmour saying something smiliar to "Mother is the low point of our artistic endeavour", and that he would not perform it even for a hundred million pounds.
I think David may have appeared on this performance, because the people who did this really made it into perfection.
Co-composer Ron Geesin, who was also at this event and plays piano, complained that the original was more like a demo and that they were pressed for time to finish it and didn't really know what to do. That's probably a huge reason why the Floyd has criticized it, since they think of it as more aimless. It does sound like they could have done more with the studio version.
@TheOneartist Which is still amazing that even for what is claimed to be an unfinished demo the band didn't have the time or money to finish, the studio version still sounds so good compared to what other bands come out with.
I wish Pink Floyd had revisited the album, and come out with a new definitive version. Unfortunately, Richard Wright is gone, and so for this piece it's not possible without him. And Waters doesn't seem to like anything experimental except for when Syd was in the band.
@bomboloneallacrema : well it's not just a copy of the Black Strat. It's a 1977 series with a different bridge pick up and the other two similar to the black strat. Gilmour that night have played a prototype of the Black Strat signature, not the original one
as much as i love this song.. it's common knowledge that all member of Pink Floyd hate it, Gilmour has said it's embarrassing and Waters wouldn't play it for a million pound - which is why i am loving this :)
Roger Water's was the vision guy in the band!! Great starting the Ideas, also Roger was involved with Lyrics and writing music,, more so in the later albums!
OMFG. A live choir AND orchestra!!! My favorite Pink Floyd album of all time!!! I would have killed to be there! A musical masterpiece that only Gods can create
@superzapper I have only seen Roger live, is David also into the same wacky politics? Oh well doesn't matter, their brilliance in music shines over this little issue.
@bedrock121 Yeah I think They have fairly similar views maybe not exactly but they are both anti war .They both played together on The hoping foundation which supports Palestinian children
@superzapper I guess the Floyd didn't see the video where the "precious" pali brats are prattling on about how they would like to kill jews and christians and how killing themselves for Allah is the best thing to look forward too.
If I recall correctly, Gilmour is using one of his signature model strats here, not actually the Black Strat. I think that's great - sure gives a glowing review if he's willing to play one!
I really love this song. When i was younger, and didnt even knew pink floyd, my dad would put on the atom heart mother cd during roadtrips. I always fell asleep before the end, and to me it always seemed like some inaccesable beautifull score, sounding a bit like a nightmare, but at the same time so soothing.
@tjrtherocksponge Sorry, I am no hippie, that's derogatory, let's keep civil. I believe the book author is Cliff Jones, I got that wrong. He worked with some Floyd sources, including Ron Geesin for rare photos. I think it's correct to assume having heard radio interviews myself, in fact, I often recorded such interviews to cassette
@tjrtherocksponge Recent reading of Cliff James Echos Bricks in the Wall, oddly retitled book, he points out Roger gave Rick the ultimatum to coax him to contribute more, but that Rick insists Roger always had a problem with his musical ability on keys, However, Rick had formal training in music, which seems to suggest he knows more then the others?!
@tjrtherocksponge Well, his opinion STATED in public was that Final Cut reduced his input to that of session musician and he was not too keen on that at all! It's less to do with the quality of the work, he said that if rejected for The Wall, how is The Final Cut material (Spare Bricks) any better since that movie and albums release? However, I always enjoyed Final Cut, I see nothing wrong with it
Dave Gilmour let EVERYONE SHINE ON that song, wouldn'tcha say? Even for a boot, I feel the impact Geesin's orchestral parts still have, very very cool
@tjrtherocksponge i was speaking mainly of Atom Heart Mother song in general, theres plenty of articles on it, but most of what i was saying was information mostly comeing from Nick Masons book Inside and Out Pink Floyd.
@Fretlessjay Nick says at times he felt something was rubbish as well as Dave. I don't think Roger Waters has said anything quite so hotly contested with regard to their output from his own opinion. One comment Rogers said was "If people don't like a show, they don't come again", I think that was in Live at Pompeii but can't recall as my Pompeii DVD is misplaced
@myinterestingfish no no belive me david was not fond of atom heart mother, non of em...except Nick maybe, in interviews dave has mentioned it a conjunction of what to them at the time sounded good but dosent sound all the great now (the studio recorded version at least.
@myinterestingfish Not only Waters, Gilmour has said that the whole album sucks. One of them (cant remember who, tho) said this should've been burned and never listened to again. I'm glad Gilmour changed his mind.
@holokinesis Ron Geesin and Waters did the BODY soundtrack before hand, but he got along with the band. The problem is they were all too close to it, as Dave has admitted to in radio interviews, he can't get objective about his own material, you can see where they are coming from when you consider they orchestrated every thing intimately as a band
@myinterestingfish Hahaha, no, they didn't hate it, Geesin did most of the work for the conducting and the EMI musicans were a-holes he had to work with due to conditions of the union. They performed it live in the 70s and it had several variations, one with ballet dancers as well
@myinterestingfish I think Gilmour really likes Atom heart mother (the album) since he also made a case for Fat old sun to be on the "Echoes - the very best of Pink Floyd" but got voted down.
@myinterestingfish It's Echoes that David Gilmour doesn't like. Swore he'd never do it live again. I forget the reason why he doesn't like it but I know he doesn't.
@waagow22 Gilmour performed Echoes on his Remember That Night tour in 2006-7. The whole DVD is brilliant but Echoes was definitely the best part. I highly recommend all fans of The Floyd check it out ASAP!
@waagow22 Wrong! David loves Echoes (Meddle album), which for him "contains a clear indication of a way forward". The group didn't like to play Atom Heart Mother because it was really difficult to play live.
@myinterestingfish They were all dissatisfied with it as a result. Waters was the one who hated it. Apparently Gilmour has warmed to it, as he said it was a good idea, just not executed to his liking.
SHIT YESS atom heart mother :D i loved this the first time i heard it so peculiar and strange of a song but you just gotta love it , and the change between the lapsteel solo and the black strat one is flawless
Why does no one write stuff like this nowadays? The nearest I've come to finding for instrumental concept albums is Automaton by Lee Davey on cdbaby, nice to see some musicians not following the norm!
I'm not sure what you're on, or where you're getting your resorces, but if you want to disprove me, you really might want to consider getting your facts straight. FIRST OF ALL, Pink Floyd weren't hired to make "Animals", as they were already in the band. You can't hire someone if they're already in the band. SECOND OF ALL, Roger ONLY wrote the lyrics. Musically, "Dogs" is entirely David Gilmour's song.
And remember, Pink Floyd weren't hired to make their own album. I think you might be confu
sing "Animals" with "The Final Cut", as that truly is a Roger Waters solo album. But regardless, Pink Floyd weren't even "hired" to make that one, because it is counted as a Pink Floyd album, even though it's not, which actually benifited the band, because they were still making money off of it. So really, "The Final Cut" was more like a gift to the other two mambers of Pink Floyd at the time it was released, simply by having Pink Floyd's name on it.
Hired help was a sarcastic slight at Roger Waters. I have the pinkfloyd signed biography so i have a pretty ok knowledge of the scenario that the band was dealing with at the time of animals. Roger had pretty much taken over, Richard Wright was annoyed and left. (Hence the lack of keyboard) The balance was no longer an even mix between the members hence the strong Roger feel the album has, (Very aggressive, The Wall ,like) Roger Wanted to be top dog and was jealous of Davids lime light.
You're coming along, kid. The only thing is that Rick never left willingly. He was blackmailed into leaving the band by Roger, who refused to release "The Wall" until Rick was out of the band.
Almost three minutes of Sheer Heaven. DG should go on the road with a brass section and choir. Please DG .... it's not self-indulgence when thousands would die to see and hear it. We never fell out of love with AHM even if you guys did .

@cubicle89
I'd assume he
1. mostly means the mainpart of AHM (album)
2. likes part of the AHM suite (song) despite not adoring the entirity of it
3. is referring, largely, to the actual recording process and quality of the album and its takes/mixing
4. possibly likes it better as he grows older? :P
5. thought it would make a fun performance
Part theory, part fact (in that some of it is directly based on facts)

Anyway, I hope you find better resorces t

@Anaben11 I'm the "guy on the left"... The guitar's not a Gilmour's replica. It's a 1977 Stratocaster with X1 Fender bridge pickup. Cheers
