There is no real need to bash any of this guys. After all, it's just science fiction, good ol' fashioned FUN science fiction. It's meant for fun. There is a vast variety for all different tastes. In the end, it's all good and fun, so just enjoy it; life is already hard enough without having to argue of which came first or which one is better. In the end, if it brings a smile to you, it's done its job. Peace everyone!! :)
The argument is of no significance, but I don't think "many people" think "Star Wars" is a copy of a silly japanese cartoon. Maybe just a few, like you do, but I dare you Mother F****r, I double-dare you, to say Ralph McQuarrie used your silly japanese cartoon as an inspiration for his "Star Wars" art work (btw, Lucas first discussed his concept for what would become "Star Wars" with McQuarrie in 1972).
Supposedly, but he was also following the formula for mythology written by Joseph Campbell ("The Power of Myth"). I also wouldn't be surprised to learn that Lucas borrowed some ideas from "Battle in Outer Space" (Toho Studios "The Great Space War" 1959), itself probably borrowing ideas from the 1930's "Flash Gordon" serials. My (irrelevant and unimportant) point is Lucas wasn't copying some silly 1975 Japanese animation.
I think the reason why many people assume Star Wars copied Space Battleship Yamato is that a lot of Hollywood movies copied Japanese anime. The Matrix copied Ghost in the Shell for example. if you don't know about it, look at my favorites (The Matrix vs Ghost in the Shell).
You do realize Star Wars was in post-production before this cartoon was released. Lucas had all conceptual storyboard and artwork completed, and his Dykstraflex studio had started filming miniatures and pyrotechnics, about a year before this cartoon was released.
In the grand scheme, its a trivial thing no doubt, but the claim that the first Star Wars (live action) movie, in any way, copied this cartoon, is purely stoopid.
George Lucas is known as a fan of Japanese movies. and he acknowledges that the plot and characters in the 1958 Japanese film The Hidden Fortress were a major inspiration. if you don't know about it, look at my favorites (George Lucas talks about the influence of samurai movies on Star Wars).
@SciFiGuy001 öh...you know that the space battleship yamato was created before star wars don´t you?^^ so ..if you want to say something...then say...the death star has the same weapon like the yamato not the other way^^
............. SINGER CHOICE FAIL!!!!!! This is like... the way layed back version of the song. the vocals are so melo and hard to understand that the Music makes them almost unhearable. Get Isao Sasaki to do the theme and give the series justice. Just listen to his version!
Those that are looking for "realism" in a cartoon that originated in the 70's need to look elsewhere. The ship has the bow of an oceanship because it was the original Yamato converted for space travel. Of course it's impossible. Just like Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers, Avatar and most every other movie. So shut up and enjoy it or ignore it altogether. Bashing it by pointing out it's flaws don't make you seem smart.
@PJMontoya THANK YOU !!! i agree ! geeeez, I'm reading some of the comments on here and there pretty stupid, if they want realism then they should go watch a documentary on world war 2 ... ugh !!
@PJMontoya yeah huh, in my opinion its one of the sexiest sci-fi starships created. very few have a real "wow" factor". Starwars and startrek all have horribly unimaginative ships (a big sphere or a big cube so thoughtfull) Even some ships from my beloved babylon 5 dont score points with me. But this Battleship Yamato is hot! Love the broadside rapid firing guns and turrets = win
What do they do when an enemy comes from below? All their massive and overpowered guns seem only to work in a very limited angle. Not to mention the anti aircraft guns which are good looking at best but utterly useless.
Also, even modern cars put all the sensor and comm equipment into the hull. The first volley would totally cripple this ships antenna...
I agree the idea of a normal 'ship' modified to space capability is a bit more than just far fetched. Still looks cool though. And as to having gun turrets well.... Why not?
but one question: why does a spaceship need a bow like a ordinary ship?
@ Hatzi89 -- It has a bow like an ordinary ship for these reasons:
1) to pay respects to the Largest Battleship, The Yamato (of course) from World War II
2) If you have countergravity, its just as easy to have the ship moor in the ocean instead of parking in orbit. No space docks to deal with, no shuttles. Just park the entire ship in a wet dock and do all of the things you need to do. :)
"but one question: why does a spaceship need a bow like a ordinary ship?"
@ Hatzi89 - Because its constructed in a drydock on earth, moors in the ocean. Countergrav is an awesome thing. Just as easy to dock on the water as it is in space, and if it docks on the water you don't need air tubes or space shuttles to get them back down. :)
That chick at the end of the video. The one where it looks like they're gonna sail the ship into her face. You know her dad used to drink when she was conceived. You can tell by how wide apart the eyes are. I'm just sayin.
Light in the common spectrum yes, can not be seen. In concentrated plasma or ion jacketed control is visible. Rail-guns, plasma canons and particle injector streams are visible. The colliders used to slam atoms together is the same energy based concept when aimed outward and not in and is visible.
As for the shaky cam, they are using the format that was used in Battlestar Galactica. It gives the effect that you are there and not just watching another distant even

There is the possibility of you had seem "Yamato" and not the cut-off/edited/renamed "Star Blazers".
The true Yamato is a homenage to the Japanese resistance in the final momments of the WW2. USA was not quite ready to say to their kids that the japanese are the hero, and US is the villain (metaphoric speaking of course).

Anime or not it still falls under science fiction. Realism doesn't matter. Science FICTION not Science FACT. It's Starblazers, can't we just love it? lol.
It makes me smile when I see people arguing about the realism of anime. You guys do realize a ship just flew out of the damn ocean and launched into space and then WTFLAZER'd something in that same space? A fucking battleship with a ballast tank. This is almost like the cat pushing a watermelon out of the lake, it makes all arguments invalid.
If you don't like that it's not being realistic THEN DON"T WATCH IT. End of discussion. Go find a realistic show that suits your needs and leave the people who actually appreciate this show ALONE
OMG,the first 15 seconds had me squee-ing like a true fan boi. The live action movie is going to awesome. Loved the Black Tigers, the Earth ships, the comet, the comet dreadnought, the battles. We're about to experience a Star Blazers renaissance. :D
@moo3992 no, the new film is live action, all of the shots of the crew in this film are animated, also, the live action film is based in the first series, this is obviously based during the attack from the White Comet Empire.
@mattmanganon this is footage from the upcoming movie. someone else added the animation. there are live people in some of the other trailers. looks great though!...can't wait!
@moo3992 this video shows the attack of the white comet empire, the new film is based during the Gamilus war. it cannot be footage from the new film, my best guess is that it came from one of the games
@mpakos18473 It's a thing they still do in Sci Fi though, there is a reason for it, if you were to watch a real space combat it would be incredibly boring. No laser light shows (remember light travels too fast to really see), and no sound. So a little artistic license is always thrown in such as sounds and laser lights.
Actually, if anyone were to use a laser based weapon in a space fight, they would need to keep the weapon constantly firing, while focused on the same point, long enough to heat up and damage the target. While there are very few if any particles in space, there are still enough to reflect the laser light back and make it visible somewhere along it's path. Even if fired a fraction of a second, a laser of a weaponized magnitude made to destroy space faring quality hulls will be visible.
Couldn't fit this on the previous post but in reply to the speed of light and sounds being a factor... Laser pointer and you would still be able to hear everything emanating from your own ship, even louder than normal since the sound can't escape the confines of the ship. And if you're thinking 3rd person point of view, there wouldn't be one like in shows since you wanted to talk about realism. In a battle that would probably be suicidal to spectate.
@jboweruk Yeah... but a WWII battleship hull slightly modified for space? I still never get the "guns on top and maybe a turret on the bottom" crap of some space ship sci-fi.
@jboweruk Actually if they used plasma bolts like on Babylon 5, then the weapons can be seen. As well as from the anime series Iczer 1, the first robot that was fighting Iczer Robo didn't have visible lasers itself when explosions were seen around Iczer Robo.
Especially in regular gun battles, we see the muzzle flash, but not the bullet whizzing by.
Oh hell yeah..... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this a new cartoon? When i was in my early teens i used to watch to this all the time!!!! I used to run home from school to watch this!! I have the first collection on DVD (Quest for Iscandar) That was cool!!
This was amazing! It's from a game, you say...damn! Now I gotta find this game! I just wish they'd do a remake of the original with these graphics. And now that US censorship isn't as strict, bring back the light violence and the deaths...

In space there is no sound, so the explosions can't be heared.
Also there is no gravity, so they can walk or eat/drink etc.
And many other mistakes.
I can ignore them in the old anime but not in this newer and in the film.

@jboweruk Thatas the point of Science FICTION :3

@jboweruk Yeah... but a WWII battleship hull slightly modified for space? I still never get the "guns on top and maybe a turret on the bottom" crap of some space ship sci-fi.
sirh0213 1 year ago
@jboweruk Actually if they used plasma bolts like on Babylon 5, then the weapons can be seen. As well as from the anime series Iczer 1, the first robot that was fighting Iczer Robo didn't have visible lasers itself when explosions were seen around Iczer Robo.
Especially in regular gun battles, we see the muzzle flash, but not the bullet whizzing by.
But don't worry, I understand your point.

In space there is no sound, so the explosions can't be heared.
"heard"
Also there is no gravity, so they can walk or eat/drink etc.
"Centrifugal force"
And many other mistakes.
"name em"
I can ignore them in the old anime but not in this newer and in the film.

This was amazing! It's from a game, you say...damn! Now I gotta find this game! I just wish they'd do a remake of the original with these graphics. And now that US censorship isn't as strict, bring back the light violence and the deaths...

That little squeek barely hearable voice is a disgrace to the series.
But this remake of the series is gonna be great.
FunteX 2 years ago
It was not a remake, just CG from a game...
There'll never be a sequel, due to copyright issues among matsumoto and nishizaki...
And yes, it took me a while to hear such a faint and unfit voice...

Iwas not talking about a sequel,
