@Cloxxki Indeed at first glance the only big pitfall would be eddy currents, but that would be a nice way to prevent this thing from flying apart if it works as intended. From lafonte's experiments I don't see why this shouldn't work. Hopefully in the coming months I'll get a chance to build a small model.
I hope that can't work, because the big mass gear ballast don't help for rotation. You can test your idea with "Algodoo" 2D simualtion softwar.

Has this been built and tried? Seems rather low-tech. Ingenious, wonder if this could work. and if it doesn't, eaxctly why not.
