@molloyboytoy So are Montario Hardesty, Ben Tate, CJ Spiller and all the other rookie rbs bust also..? I don't think you know what your talking about. You need to find a way to separate fantasy from reality.
@Eball06 He's overrated that's all I'm saying. In addition he's been labeled an injury case for a while as well. I'll admit I'm calling it early. So get off his nuts!
@molloyboytoy Present indications is that Ryan Mathews is pretty much 100% recovered from the high ankle sprain. This is his second week having a full practice. He's getting the reps he needs to stay sharp (very important for a rookie). He can only go up from here.
@Eball06 Hopefully because I traded Dez Bryant and Rapelessburger for that fucking pumpkin. Even healthy last week he had only 43 yards on 15 carries which is sad when Mike Tolbert (who's awful) is outgaining you in YPC. Which leads me to believe that Mathews is soft, let alone the way Norv Turner babies him like a two year old. PPL like Hillis, LT, Shonn Greene, Ronnie Brown, Felix, Cadillac etc didn't get babied like Mathews has been this season which makes me worry about him going forward.
@molloyboytoy Tolbert has more experience with the offense. Plus Norv calls horrible run plays for Mathews -- he keeps having Mathews run it up the gut when, Mathews has been a beast on the sweeps and going outside. Mathews is getting reps and the game is slowing down for him. I can't think of a reason why he can't have a breakout game against Houston (barring injuries of course).
@molloyboytoy I can't really criticize him. I feel sorry for the kid for the most part. I can't even begin to understand the level of frustration he must be feeling (not good for the psyche of a rookie). He was fighting for extra yards with 3 guys on him & got the ball knocked out from behind ( good effort but, a bonehead rookie mistake). He comes back in to redeem himself & then re-aggravates his ankle injury & his day was done.
@molloyboytoy If Mathews is healthy then he'll start. Chargers ain't paying him all that money to sit. He is a rookie so getting his reps is very important in his development. He is a way superior talent compared to Tolbert and, over time as he learns and develops, Tolbert will slowly fade out.
@Eball06 I don't disagree, but they've been babying all his injuries thus far. So if he does play, (I know this for sure because I have to monitor his stats in fantasy) he'll receive about 10 carries a game the next few weeks and average about fifty yards. Last time, he got about a 4 week respite because of his injury of the aforesaid limited reps. Which leaves him weeks 15 & 16 to breakout which I highly doubt. He's going to have to prove himself next year or SERIOUSLY face the bust tag.
@molloyboytoy I don't know if they're babying him b/c they want him healthy for the playoffs or what. But time is definitely running out for his breakout game. He just needs to complete a game. It's too bad he picked up that ankle injury ( it was nasty looking, I thought he was done for the year). Luckily, he has a bye week to get healthy (Both Mathews and Tolbert are rehabilitating their ankle injuries this week). Mathews has a good chance at Denver, we all saw what McFadden did to them.
@Eball06 Still Mathews hasn't displayed any of the explosiveness that defines a game breaker like Darren Mcfabulous. Up to this point, Mathews has been nothing but a disappointment to everyone who's put any faith in him this year. They're not resting him for the playoffs when at this point they won't even get in because of Oak and KC. He simply doesn't have it thus far which is why they're leaning on Tolbert more. ESPN profiles can't make a RB good. We'll just have to wait and see!
@molloyboytoy I don't think you've been watching the Chargers play much. Mathews has had 2 explosive TD runs from the outside in goal line situations. He out ran a corner on first his diving TD and, pretty much outran the whole Titans defense on his second. People didn't think DMac was so fabulous not long ago.
@molloyboytoy Type (Ryan Mathews E:60) in the YouTube search bar and check the bit ESPN did about him.. This will allow you to see that he is not going to be a "bust", well, that's unless he gets "busted" up by injuries.
I can't believe I was able to pickup Jamaal Charles, Jahvid Best, Shonn Greene, Ryan Matthews, Tim Hightower, and Joseph Addai in my pay league for my RB group
Yall sum haters man it dnt matter wat college u go to i seen players in the nfl dat came frome D2 D3 schools n shine in the nfl great example Big Ben already got 2 rings n went to a D2 school n dnt forget Jerry Rice n jus becuz the teams he play against suck dnt mean he sucks luk at Chris Johnson he played against teams dat sucked in college n luk at him he the numba one rb in the nfl maybe one of the top ten offensive players in the nfl so leave the man alone we'll see wen he plays in the Nfl

Hey he is gonna do damage this season... if he can get comfortable in his role as a complimentory running back, he will be a versatile threat,! it aint gonna be just sproles no more... but dont expect a 2001 LT rookie version neither, he will do his own great stats, let go Chargers! one things for sure, hes gonna be a star on the Chargers. cuz we really needed a RB. XD, but we still need a NT, thats our one downside to our picks this year
Ryan Mathews is a fucking beast and I'm not a San Diego fan nor am I a Fresno St. fan but this dude is great to watch. Wish the Vikings could have snagged him.
Matthews is a beast. This was a GREAT pick! AJ didn't leave it to chance that RM would fall to us at 28. AJ identified they guy he wanted and he agressively went and got him. For all those WAC haters, don't forget that two of the best RB's in NFL history came out of the WAC in Marshall Fault (SDSU) and LT (TCU). I can't wait to see RM hitting the hole in Lightning Bolts. And AJ will make sure the D is stocked with enough talent for Rivera to work his magic! It's ALL GOOD Bolt Fans!
@modernwarfarepwner Hey man Steelers fan here. Great pick up with Mathews. the kid is a beast. You couldn't let sproles try and do everything himself anymore.
Just Look At His Stats 1,808-yard season as a true junior An average of 150.7 rushing yards per game One of the two players to post a more prolific WAC season was LaDainian Tomlinson, so that gives an indication of the level of talent that Mathews possesses.
i Know We Need A Nose Tackle Be We Can Always Trade Back In The Second Round To Get Brian Price Out Of UCLA or Terrence Cody
I don't know man he's got skills but AJ gave away the farm for a RB in the 1st round. As of today I don't like it at all! Thanks Tim Dobbins for all your hard work as a Charger, don't hit our new RB too hard coming thru the middle when you see SD next. Matthews prove AJ right and we'll forgot that we gave up 4 possible Chargers for you.
I knew they would pick him 1st round. Awesome talent and he is a charger fan beforehand. He wants to be here. As for the nose tackle we will make due we did last year. No crying we needed a RB replacement first.
@Jkerns79 I AGREE 100% PORCENT, I WAS SUPRISE THAT AJ, MADE THE MODE WHEN BUFALLO GOT CJ SPILLER, IF SAN DIEGO HAD GOTTEN SPILLER I WOULD BE OK, BUT MATHEWS HE REMINDS ME OF EDDIE GEORGE A TOTAL BEAST.
ya people r dumb this guy is a total freak look up his sports science video on ESPN.. crazy..but hey im glad he got drafted to the chargers! maybe get to see him play bcuz i reign from Fresno Ca all is well good luck Mr Mathews
@pinoyj858 are you serious mathews is gonna be great for the chargers he might be the key to our fisrt superbowl lynch is washed up already in a young career thats why buffalo took spiller
I like his burstiness. Hes not the fastest but if youve got that initial acceleration, you can go places. he's like those 4 wheel drive cars (mitsubishi evo and subaru wrx/sti) great initial acceleration!
@TheScavenger31 That says alot about the teams that didn't make it to the playoffs, or even worse, got their asses handed to them by the Chargers. Yea, they choked in the playoffs, but thats still better than the other teams.
i like how all these people are saying that WAC is bad n how the players or 3rd n 4th tier @magoo77stickinit, yet i dont see they ass playin D-I football either, honestly i don't like fresno state but this kid obviously has talent; speed, jumpin abilty, agilty makin cuts, hands, power truckin ppl, just watch, n if you dont like it then dont waste ur time looking up ryan matthews in the first place, peace ignorant muffuckas
jahvid best looks like he could beat this guy in the 40 by a full second. pretty noticeable speed difference. but that is not necessarily what the chargers need with sproles. I like this guys vertical and hard running style.
@MIxedColorz No he didnt his time was a 4.48 which is not bad at all! IF he ran a 4.3 at best this guy would the number one damn pick with his other skills.
i dont know if i trust the wac guys too much...he looks pretty solid..but then again hes play against 3rd or maybe even fourth teir players...i like players from the sec..big 12..big 10..pac 10 ...acc..big east...but mostly sec lol thats were the championships are at
damn all these haters hatin on mah boy mathews..seen him tear it up at our old high school n in college n gna watch him tear it up in tha nfl..n @daviedave59..u think hes a bit slow n not dat good lol tha nations leadin rusher aint dat good? check dem eyes son!!
@chargersfan1111 ya i hope u guys take terrance cody... Becuz i wan the lions to take this guy. He could be great, or he could bust. Ill take the risk.
you can't compare him to LT, hes much more of a power runner than LT, yet lacks the same ability to make cuts that LT has. but with his speed and ability to break tackles he should be a solid back in SD
Lagarette Blount -9 yards rushing vs Boise? Best will be good for 10 carries a game? Well, I knew mathews would be good, but now I say he is the best of this class!
@dwid1984 Matthews is bigger and faster than Moats, I see him having a much bigger impact if he can stay healthy. Chargers may target him in the end of round 1, and if so, watch out!
Lol, it's not up to the fans! Funny Americans, you can elect politicians, and your focused on a game of ball, no wonder the US is slipping into 3rd world status!
enjoy ur communist govt or dictatorship or watever ur lame country is, ya 3rd world dude, we're living great over here in the greatest country in the world.. lol ur funny, leave it to a disgruntled 3rd worlder to turn a sports topic into some uneducated half-ass political argument lol loser
Ya..I have'nt figured that part out either? Cuz everytime Fresno threw the Ball to Ryan Mathews he did great things? I cannot understand what the recieving part is all about...sure route running...but certainly not recieving or catching the ball?
I think it all depends on Sproles whether the Chargers draft Matthews. If Sproles stays then i see them drafting Dwyer to compliment him, but if Sproles leaves then Matthews can be an all purpose back for the Chargers.
Only the Parriots know about Fresno State, I forsee the patriots taking him based on thier knowledge of Fresno state and the pro set..and the qaulity of a pick...example never fumbling, that is a stat you don't notice but believe me the pats will!
He's ok.. But I dont see what all the fuss is.. Strong.. A Slasher.. but running through a lot of space in college isn't the same as running through plugged up holes in the NFL.. The Chargers BETTER not use their 1st ROunder on him! Jahvid, C.J., & Dwyer are much better than he is..
Quit your hating, you can only wish to be considered for the NFL. Football is a man's sport; it has nothing to do with the conference you played in. And on Sundays, men will play.
its not hating, its called fact. He had trouble staying healthy playing in the WAC, so his shelf life might not be great, where the defenders are much faster and bigger. Yes there are succesfful runners from smaller conferences. I think Mathews will be good in the pros, hes just a little overrated, not the 1st round pick people are making him out to be. Matt Forte was a better prospect and went in the 2nd, and has been averaging 3.8 ypc, not exactly great but gets a million touches
Mathews is rated where he needs to be rated. I don't know why people hate on players from mid-major conferences. An example of an overrated RB is Bush. Chris Johnson came from a mid-major conference and he is killing in the pros; I bet not many people believed he could have done what he is doing now. Mathews ran a 4.41 forty @218 lbs; and he's even hit a 4.35. I don't know what more you expect from him.
The team doesn't matter? You are looking at one of the All Time greats at RB! Unless, he ruins himself, nobody will stop this kid! Just Remember he came from the Valley like all the other good NFL football players!
i was doubtin this guy not knowin anything about him but wow he can b a problem...im hopin to hear with the 28th pick in the nfl draft san diego selects C.J Spiller...........OR javid Best .Dwyer...or mathews....and one of these backs that can get r ground game back on track....i'll b happy with 1 of the 4
i'm with you on spiller. he can definitely be our version of CJ(chris johnson), and i pray that we finally get our right tackle since we've been lacking on that forever. but unless we commit to running the ball with the purpose of being successful running, as opposed to just using it to open up the pass, then we won't ever be successful running like we were with LT. that's just facts.
Think he could do a good job replacing LT, but we'll wait and see. He is projected to run in the 4.5 range, maybe a little lower, and I think he could start next year. He is faster than Hester, no doubt, and Hester was drafted in the 3rd. But we'll know a lot more in March/April :)
not if the O-line doesn't block like how it didn't last year. it wasn't the RB's, it was the O-line. when our backs are provided with space, they produce. when they're met with penetration, we perform like last year. it's that simple. NO runningback would produce with the type of blocking we had last year.
I wish More SD fans would understand that...LT's "demise" had more to do with poor blocking than it had to do with a a socalled called "massive" decline...our Run blocking was just horrendous
Exactly. We don't exactly have the most intelligent fans here in SD. I know many people who blamed Rivers for getting sacked. I'd tell them "Do you not understand the importance of an offensive line? Do you think they get paid to just stand there and be decorations? What do you think they're supposed to be doing?" Most Charger fans aren't very football smart, and tend to make the knowledgeable fans look dumb because of association. But glad that another fan actually knows what they're saying.
I feel the same way. PEOPLE FAIL TO SEE THAT SPROLES AVERAGED LIKE 3.7 yards per carry as well. And sproles is very fast, so that means it had to do with the line.
i don't buy the whole Sproles can't break tackles thing. It your talking about lineman then no but he is much stronger then linebackers and safeties. Once he picks up steam he is hard to bring down. It just the online is so bad that he can't pick up steam. Dude can bench 400 plus and safe squat 818...
What's are system man? We don't really have a run game right now bro so we really can't judge him. He can take over the role of FB, as well as RB. Sproles will be a good pitch option, Gerhart would eat up inside runs as well as some outside runs. He also is a capable reciever.
I just see him as another Jacob Hester (who was drafted in the 2nd round). He's a great receiver, you are right but I don't see him as a starting running back in this league.
i think Gerhart would be like Gartrell Johnson was for us(we saw how long he lasted). you're right that he isn't right for our system, because we have a finesse offense. we're not good for power running, except towards the end of games.
as a chargers fan i want jonathan dwyer, then jahvid best, and if we're able to draft a NT first round, if matthews is available second round, i'd love to have him become a charger

@TheScavenger31 That says alot about the teams that didn't make it to the playoffs, or even worse, got their asses handed to them by the Chargers. Yea, they choked in the playoffs, but thats still better than the other teams.

I'll feel sorry for this guy if he goes to SD. Not a tailback friendly offense at all. Hate to see him waste away there as a screen back.

i know its pretty fukn boring but we need a mix showing his pass blocking. cos if he comes to san diego thats going to b real important

Looks like the rb the lions drafted a few years back forget his name. Why all this charger talk?
Locksmith2dmvp 1 year ago
i like how all these people are saying that WAC is bad n how the players or 3rd n 4th tier @magoo77stickinit, yet i dont see they ass playin D-I football either, honestly i don't like fresno state but this kid obviously has talent; speed, jumpin abilty, agilty makin cuts, hands, power truckin ppl, just watch, n if you dont like it then dont waste ur time looking up ryan matthews in the first place, peace ignorant muffuckas
MIxedColorz 1 year ago 7
jahvid best looks like he could beat this guy in the 40 by a full second. pretty noticeable speed difference. but that is not necessarily what the chargers need with sproles. I like this guys vertical and hard running style.
steelcool20 1 year ago
@steelcool20 o really matthews ran a 4.4 n best ran a 4.3 one second huh dumass
MIxedColorz 1 year ago
@MIxedColorz No he didnt his time was a 4.48 which is not bad at all! IF he ran a 4.3 at best this guy would the number one damn pick with his other skills.
chiladin 1 year ago
i dont know if i trust the wac guys too much...he looks pretty solid..but then again hes play against 3rd or maybe even fourth teir players...i like players from the sec..big 12..big 10..pac 10 ...acc..big east...but mostly sec lol thats were the championships are at

@chargersfan1111 ya i hope u guys take terrance cody... Becuz i wan the lions to take this guy. He could be great, or he could bust. Ill take the risk.
maxypooh15 1 year ago
you can't compare him to LT, hes much more of a power runner than LT, yet lacks the same ability to make cuts that LT has. but with his speed and ability to break tackles he should be a solid back in SD

Enough! The WAC is just as good as any other conference! "he won't make it in the NFL he plays in the WAC". Bullshit! He is the next gale Sayers!

Lagarette Blount -9 yards rushing vs Boise? Best will be good for 10 carries a game? Well, I knew mathews would be good, but now I say he is the best of this class!

dwid1984 2 years ago
@dwid1984 Matthews is bigger and faster than Moats, I see him having a much bigger impact if he can stay healthy. Chargers may target him in the end of round 1, and if so, watch out!

Ya..I have'nt figured that part out either? Cuz everytime Fresno threw the Ball to Ryan Mathews he did great things? I cannot understand what the recieving part is all about...sure route running...but certainly not recieving or catching the ball?
blldgs101 2 years ago
These are poor choice for highlights, 2 games worth? 2 mediocre games for him at that ?
ronpauleducates 2 years ago
Everyone looks good against New Mexico State. lol
hirofan 2 years ago
I think it all depends on Sproles whether the Chargers draft Matthews. If Sproles stays then i see them drafting Dwyer to compliment him, but if Sproles leaves then Matthews can be an all purpose back for the Chargers.
ivand619 2 years ago
Welcome to the Dallas Cowboys
robertparks2933 2 years ago
Only the Parriots know about Fresno State, I forsee the patriots taking him based on thier knowledge of Fresno state and the pro set..and the qaulity of a pick...example never fumbling, that is a stat you don't notice but believe me the pats will!
ronpauleducates 2 years ago
he reminds me a lot of ray rice
sk8er98567 2 years ago
Buzzinit451 2 years ago
i can see this guy surpassing the avg shelf life of nfl rbs by the way he runs...
jonboyq23 2 years ago
he couldn't even stay healthy in college, i doubt he will in the pros. He will find running in the NFL isn't like the WAC
dwid1984 2 years ago
Quit your hating, you can only wish to be considered for the NFL. Football is a man's sport; it has nothing to do with the conference you played in. And on Sundays, men will play.
Eball06 2 years ago
Comment removed
dwid1984 2 years ago
it has alot to do with conference to a certain degree. but i think matthews will do great in the pros.
Dallasblows20 2 years ago
its not hating, its called fact. Matt Forte was a better prospect and went in the 2nd, and has been averaging 3.8 ypc, not exactly great but gets a million touches
dwid1984 2 years ago
Mathews is rated where he needs to be rated. I don't know why people hate on players from mid-major conferences. An example of an overrated RB is Bush. Chris Johnson came from a mid-major conference and he is killing in the pros; I bet not many people believed he could have done what he is doing now. Mathews ran a 4.41 forty @218 lbs; and he's even hit a 4.35. I don't know what more you expect from him.
Eball06 2 years ago
he got the speed size and power tho
lhwood777 2 years ago
The team doesn't matter? You are looking at one of the All Time greats at RB! Unless, he ruins himself, nobody will stop this kid! Just Remember he came from the Valley like all the other good NFL football players!
ronpauleducates 2 years ago
i was doubtin this guy not knowin anything about him but wow he can b a problem...im hopin to hear with the 28th pick in the nfl draft san diego selects C.J Spiller...........OR javid Best .Dwyer...or mathews....and one of these backs that can get r ground game back on track....i'll b happy with 1 of the 4
jon5doe 2 years ago
i'm with you on spiller. he can definitely be our version of CJ(chris johnson), and i pray that we finally get our right tackle since we've been lacking on that forever. but unless we commit to running the ball with the purpose of being successful running, as opposed to just using it to open up the pass, then we won't ever be successful running like we were with LT. that's just facts.
LilPeruano 2 years ago
I think he will replace L.T.
adammwilson 2 years ago
Think he could do a good job replacing LT, but we'll wait and see. He is projected to run in the 4.5 range, maybe a little lower, and I think he could start next year. He is faster than Hester, no doubt, and Hester was drafted in the 3rd. But we'll know a lot more in March/April :)
damianocunego7 2 years ago
man we need to get this guy go chargers he will open up the running game again
DDJ4life3 2 years ago
not if the O-line doesn't block like how it didn't last year. it wasn't the RB's, it was the O-line. when our backs are provided with space, they produce. when they're met with penetration, we perform like last year. it's that simple. NO runningback would produce with the type of blocking we had last year.
LilPeruano 2 years ago
I wish More SD fans would understand that...LT's "demise" had more to do with poor blocking than it had to do with a a socalled called "massive" decline...our Run blocking was just horrendous
villainakavicci 2 years ago 2
LilPeruano 2 years ago
I feel the same way. PEOPLE FAIL TO SEE THAT SPROLES AVERAGED LIKE 3.7 yards per carry as well. And sproles is very fast, so that means it had to do with the line.
cal31BRIAN23 1 year ago
Sproles would have more yards per carry if he could break tackles.
Eball06 1 year ago
i don't buy the whole Sproles can't break tackles thing. It your talking about lineman then no but he is much stronger then linebackers and safeties. Once he picks up steam he is hard to bring down. It just the online is so bad that he can't pick up steam. Dude can bench 400 plus and safe squat 818...
neotri45 1 year ago
c thats the problem mathews needs big holes to to get upfield...chargers dont have an O line. best isnt physiscal but hes fast.
ghettodudefrmdahoodz 1 year ago
Most of the play calls were up the middle runs i think he wouldve got a better average with more pitches or outside runs
sd467 1 year ago
If u guys dont want Matthews we'll take'em. Go Eagles!!
mcsuchnsuch 2 years ago
Toby Gerhart, Chargers please draft him.
MillerTheHighLife29 2 years ago
He doesn't fit in our system. I'd rather take Dwyer or Jahvid Best (assuming we don't trade up to get Spiller)
TracyMacAddidas 2 years ago
@TracyMacAddidas
What's are system man? We don't really have a run game right now bro so we really can't judge him. He can take over the role of FB, as well as RB. Sproles will be a good pitch option, Gerhart would eat up inside runs as well as some outside runs. He also is a capable reciever.
MillerTheHighLife29 2 years ago
I just see him as another Jacob Hester (who was drafted in the 2nd round). He's a great receiver, you are right but I don't see him as a starting running back in this league.
TracyMacAddidas 2 years ago
i think Gerhart would be like Gartrell Johnson was for us(we saw how long he lasted). you're right that he isn't right for our system, because we have a finesse offense. we're not good for power running, except towards the end of games.
LilPeruano 2 years ago
as a chargers fan i want jonathan dwyer, then jahvid best, and if we're able to draft a NT first round, if matthews is available second round, i'd love to have him become a charger
thegodsarewithus 2 years ago
What about SPILLER... I think he is just as good as them two you mentioned... Spiller or Devine would go good with SD
untouchablemvj1982 2 years ago
Spiller is amazing, but he's too good to be available 32 picks into the draft haha
thegodsarewithus 2 years ago
only issue with Devine is you're thinking one draft too early. he's returning for his senior season.
LilPeruano 2 years ago
please chargers don not draft this guy!! we so dont need his type we need some jonathan dwyer :)
who do you guys think the chargers will draft??
both of this guys are under aj's eyes..
i say we should draft jonathan dwyer
