I didn't buy this single because I liked 'How We Used To Live' - I appreciated the flip side ('Roseneck') far more! However it is not contained on the album but nevertheless worth listening!
Gotta love the 50's/60's visuals: nostalgia is everywhere in this video... it evokes a sense of emptiness. Capturing the faded (or fading) glory of a forgotten coastal resort town?
I recognise places in Southend-on-Sea and Canvey Island.
Tots 2000 night club, the wind-swept sea-front cafeteria and the small trains are in Southend (the trains on Southend Pier).
Most of the Canvey stuff is in the third part and includes the sea wall (with grafitti) and the small one bedroom bungalows that made up the first houses built there.
The only person shown in the 9 1/2 minutes is Sarah and only in the last part of the video. A very simple way to create a feeling of loneliness, but definitely well done and in combination with this great music truly a masterpiece!
Okay...All you St. Etienne Fans/Lovers/fighters-for, where can I purchase the extended "lounge-pub-cocktail band" sounding ending of this song...heard it on the net the other day. Seems it was edited out of the album version but yeah, Sarah croons to it for more than just the ending. Anybody?
This is not the PVD Remix or his Dub. Nor is it the Dot Allison Remix, or the Aim Mix. Nor is it a Long Version. It is the original version as featured on the single of the same name, and on the album Sound of Water.
actually Pats dear, as a personal friend of Bob & Pete who actually collects everything those clever boys do, I can assure you that you are quite wrong. This is the original single version and this is the video that comes on the cd single in fact. and it's the same as the album.
actually i think you are the biggest fan ever. and you must have an ultra rare version of the song. so rare in fact that saint etienne themselves haven't heard it!
a true saint etienne fan would know that this is in fact the original version as featured on Sound of Water album (catalogue MNTCD1018) and the How We Used To Live single (catalogue MNT53CD), and this same video is on the CD single itself. i will ask Pete, Bob and Sarah to write to you personally to confirm if you like.....
Amazing Imagery - Sarah, Pete and Bob you are ACE!
I bought this as soon as it was released and was mesmerized how your artistic ability. The apex of St. Etienne!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I finally found this video after struggling for a long time to remember the name of this song and the singer.
Lo and behold I finally the disc I thought I had lost amongst my stuff while looking for something else and went straight to YouTube to see the video again.
Nice seeing it again but it is shocking how different the video is from my memory of it.
Such a lovely song...
Whatever you do, DON'T listen to the Paul Van Dyk remix though, it'll ruin your weekend (trust me).

It's also no coincidence that in the music track she keeps repeating, "fade away..."!

This is my favorite SE song. I listen to it whenever I feel blue. Does anyone know where is the glitzy beachfront in the second half?
