Old science fiction movies seem more likable to me because the special effects were actually special and gave a feeling of a more realistic future. I am not saying I don't like the modern special effects, but modern ones are more focussed on action. Only in Pandorum I've seen effects that were worth their time in a modern film, but the film wasn't really that good. :(

Outland was original, sheriff in a space mining colony, frontier town in space. Code 46, never saw it, but another dystopia, in the future DNA makes our lives. Gattaca, another future utopia, but there are losers in the DNA codes adding a new human struggle. Fantastic Voyage, edgy science fiction, where size does not matter. Altered States, getting into our subconscious and it is a beast, plays on isolation chambers.

Second, Solaris, the film from Andrei Tarkovsky is my other list of sci-fi films from all over the world (non-american, most of them are soviet or from eastern Europe).
