I myself have seen all episodes in the series and own all 5 seasons on DVD. The end of the final episode even ends with Bill Bixby leaving town with his brown bag in hand as this theme is playing.

If the piece was written to be taken from an outsider's POV, you can add that air of hope to it as well, as the Hulk is looked at to be a hero by some.

Bill Bixby in that legendary TV Series used to look so melancolic.
