thanks for the video...a++ i know the whole fretboard pretty well (all the modes) and learning these things def. helps progress your syncopation and different variations to get different sounds
Evening all. For those that still can't figure this out i have just done a tab. Check on ultimate-guitar in a couple of days, hopefully they'll submit it. Feel free to all leave praise as someone has (me) has finally done it. Hope it goes through, sorry to get hopes up if not.
nice playing, I'm too lazy to learn it note for note, (it's not classical music), so I just hear a riff and copy it and throw my own shitty licks in and try to make something happen. :-)
spending hours trying to decipher someone else's playing is definitely NOT how JM learned how to play guitar. One does not judge a guitar player on how easily or quickly he can LEARN a song. It doesn't really matter HOW you learn a song; whether watching this video repeatingly, or by a tab. What IS important is that you DO learn it, or you will never be able to utilize the licks and the style that JM uses in this solo. So why doesn't someone just tab it out or make a tutorial please?!
same whoever tabs this i will build a statue to dedicate to him/her there are some poeple out there that just wanna learn a classic tune but down have teh time to learn to play by ear
Or at very least tell us what scale this is based off of? My mission in life before I die will be to tab this and put it all over the internet.
To the guy who says tabs kill good solo's, we don't care, we want to see some tabs. To the guys who posted this video, I have nothing but respect and praise for you. You're helping alot of people.

im assuming you guys don't play guitar very well if at all then haha, because a main part of guitar, or any instrument for that matter, is trying different genres and seeing if you like them. this is an EXCELLENT straight blues riff to try out if you want to practice some of the scales. Cheers!

I guess the point to my doing this was for me to learn some new 'colors' to add to my own playing. Learning it note for note helps me understand the music better and adds a dynamic to my own playing by using chords, notes and phrasing that I never even knew existed. I hoped it might do the same for others. It's true I'm not very original nor a very competent guitarist, I just love the exploration.
@SimpleAngst agreed completely. I am a music major and iam pretty sure every other musician out there learned alot from copying their inspirations. John definitely learned his playing from hendrix and stevie ray vaughan. SRV learned his stuff from hendrix and other blues greats... You eventually get your own style but only after learning the tools... Look at eric johnson.. he is one of the most technical guitarists out there, he is who he is because his fav artists inspired him to learn.
I agree but this is an exception i think. I loved the intro to this, i was just jamming to this the other day while my friend was watching it. Good fun! But yes, something just along same lines woulda been funky.
You don't seem to understand the concept here. I understand what he's fucking doing, but I seem to be the only one who has realized that now we're gonna be seeing people copying this exact solo all over the place, people too lazy to learn it by ear.
And as for your attack at my skill, I learned the roots of this jam by ear myself. Copying note for note is gay and unoriginal.
why is it gay that someone learned a solo note for note? It just means he pays attention to details. He didn't rip this solo off or claimed it to be his. And the unoriginal claim can not apply here because he's covering a song which means he never meant it to be original.
A song is one thing. A one time improvised jam is another. I don't hate him for doing this, I hate him for opening this jam up to millions of completely ignorant guitarists who will learn it note for note.
Hey look...how do you know that other guitarist are ignorant? I don't think they are ignorant if they stumbled upon this video therefore learning about John Mayer's music and his influences. Getting inspired to play or play better - to me isn't ignorant.
You know that Jimi Hendrix never does Machine gun the same twice but yet major guitar publications still puts out the transcription note for note.
woah now. get off your high horse there, chief. everyone starts out somewhere, and there's nothing wrong with a beginner hearing something they like and then needing a step-by-step tutorial to learn from it.
you're 16 years old.. take it easy with the dissing of growing musicians.
I have no problem with people doing this for songs. This jam will only be done once. It was a singular moment in time, and shouldn't be learned so easily by every mediocre blues player who hears it.
you obviously have a very high opinion of yourself and your ability, and reasoning with teenage guitar-center types is pointless. a kid wanting to learn one of Mayer's jams isn't going to interfere with your bedroom guitar playing. take it easy. the blues is not some secret that is locked away with a key and bestowed on only those worthy. if it was, suburban white 16 year old kids would not be playing it and using it as means for a high ground.
I have no problem with this type of thing for recorded blues songs, but the original version of this, the live jam by Mayer, shouldn't be exploited so every single person who feels like it can play it.
i addressed your point. you're saying that you don't think that these jams should be opened up to easy access for people to play, and i told you that the blues is not some snobby country club.
Buddy Guy said of SRV;
"Stevie was the type of person where they gave this guy the key, he opened the door, and threw the damn key away and said, 'All of y'all come in here. Let's play and show people how this shit's supposed to be done.'
again, if not for guys like SRV, you wouldn't be playing blues.
The second half of your post literally made me laugh out loud? haha wth dude? Of course I wouldn't be playing the blues if it weren't for my heroes (SRV, Clapton, Mayer, etc.). I know this.
i'm glad i made you laugh, but you missed the point. i was saying that if it wasn't for guys like Stevie who really opened the blues up to a completely different demographic, you wouldn't be able to sit here and talk about the blues as if you're an authority on the matter. 60 years ago, a white kid would have gotten laughed at for trying to play the blues. it was rooted in the oppression of African-Americans at the time and it wasn't a good idea for anyone to intrude on that. (cont)
Granted, I suppose I'm being a tad snobby, however, guitarists aren't what they used to be,and I really despise all the youtube commenters asking for tabs. This is virtually the same thing.
I know about the cultural roots of the blues; I was challenging it. It's now been a while since a white kid couldn't freely play the blues.
that's exactly your problem. you "despise" people who may not have a natural talent for music and need that extra help. some people do not have a musical ear and really have trouble figuring things out, and some people just like playing guitar as a hobby just want to learn something that they enjoyed hearing, again, whether it be a one-time jam or a song doesn't matter. does that mean they should be condescended by some kid? no.
the point is that if it wasn't for the greats of the past that stopped being so snobby about the blues and opened it up to younger kids, we would not have our John Mayer, Derek Trucks, Joe Bonamassa, or Davy Knowles, so you need to get off your high horse and realize that you're just a kid with no place to decide what is okay for other people to want to play and happen to need it explained to them, whether it be learning a one-time jam by their hero note-for-note, or their favorite song.
Beshimi, your comments are dead on...coun't have said them better myself, and you know seem to know your lincon log. Trucks, Bonamassa, Davy Knowles...that's my inpiration right there and at the top of my list on current legends in the making. Hey is there anybody not on that list that I should check out? Always looking to get some inspiration and you seem to have the same good taste as myself... Thanks alot if you happen to reply to this. All the best, David
hey there. as far as great guitarists of this generation, those guys are at the forefront. really, the only one i can think of that's doing something interesting today is Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Johnny Lang is another great young guy, but he's been around for a while and you've probably heard of him. lately though i have been drawing inspiration from a lot of the acoustic greats, like Tommy Emmanuel, Phil Keaggy, Antoine Dufour, and so forth.. Trucks is always on the top of my list, though.
Thanks! I haven't heard of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez...I'll be checking him out as well as the acoustic guys you mentioned. Speaking of which there's a guy with a killer acoustic style on here that does a phenmonial job with little wing. You may have heard of him... Monte Montgomery? If you haven't seen the vid its worth checking out. And Trucks is my all time favorite guitarist...definitely at the top of my list too. Thanks again for your response...I really appreciate it.
Furthermore, I am not trying to be an elitist snob, I'm saying I don't want a bunch of retarded guitar-hero-brand guitarists putting up their 'awesome sweet' cover videos of this jam, and I know they will after seeing this video.
I want to see people respect that this was an improv by Mayer and that they should go make up their own jams.
Please forgive me for posting 3 times. It was an accident. If there is anyone willing to help me tab this I will put it into a texted format tab and a guitar pro format tab. Any takers?
Is there any way someone who has learned using this vid could do a vid of it like super super slow? I am having trouble seeing and hearing the individual sounds and I forget it when I try to figure out what is being played. This is what tabs are handy for, although I totally agree some things are better figured out, this is just a little much for some people. Anyone willing to tab this would probably be held in the highest eteem. PLEASE MAKE A SLOW VID (for all of the slow ppl) OR TAB! PLEASE!
omg thank you so much for figuring this out, and pretty slow too with the camra zoomed up on the guitar, if anyone asks for tabs, they should kill themselves. it doesnt get any easier to figure out how to play this after watching this with a guitar in your lap
Great effort man! Thanx! It was a nice surpirse to run into this video. I noticed that some parts are not played in the same position that John did live, but that´s only being picky! It´s awesome!
Man, I just finished watching all your vids. You've worked out some of the best pieces of mayer's guitar work. Great job!I hope you keep it up. Now we just need someone to tab them.....
Sorry I learn from watching mayer's hands and listening to the music. I really stink at writing tab but would be glad to help someone else in any way I can if they would like to tab it.

Now we just need someone to tab them.....

at 2:01 you do like a fall off, cant seem to get that right.. what exactly is it
tdbNdtb 4 years ago
If it's exactly at 2:01 it's just G(string)-7th fret, G-5th fret then D-7th fret D-5th fret and A-8th fret. Does that help at all?

its a really quick hammer on 10 to 12 on the b string.
then do a quick high to low sweep. the notes are (from high to low, b to d) 10, 11, 12.
its hard to explain bout it sounds like the quick hammer on. then a quick triplet downward sweep

Sorry I learn from watching mayer's hands and listening to the music. I really stink at writing tab but would be glad to help someone else in any way I can if they would like to tab it.
