No matter how professional the project manager may be s/he is depending to a large extent on the skills, knowledge and commitment and time of other people who may for whatever reason not be so forthcoming

In addition to this you have to take into account company politics, personal agendas and a whole host of other issues that are not readily disclosed to the Project Manager for a wide variety of reasons

Even if the project in question was run by an incompetent project manager that still does not discredit the quality or functionality of the Prince2 Project Management System.

I have a BA in Strategic Business and Marketing and have some 20 odd years additional business reading under my belt. I have been studying Prince2 for the past three months with a view to taking the exam in the early part of next year.

The reason for this timescale is that I want to pass this exam with a score in the upper 90’s and not have to rely on a minimal pass rate for my career.

This raises another point in this debate. Its ok studying and passing the Prince2 exam at a minimum rate, but that is only a foundation.

A ‘Good Practitioner’ cannot be expected to intelligently communicate with other professionals or understand the complexity of business issues and problems unless s/he has a lot more education, training and practical experience in a wide range of other business subjects.

Please correct me Hetherw Terminal 5 maybe you think its OK, I don't, I am sure there was a risk and it was in the log. However no much was done. Because the risk was logged!

Its good for managers to have a log of when they said there is a problem.

How ever the project manager never did any thing because he was filling logs

@Barmorris Heathrow terminal 5 problems were caused by the knock on effect of staff not being able to park cars the morning it opened, the tight deadlines and security required for flights meant they quickly backed up and escalated. The project methodology cannot be to blame.

Wembley, like most large builds, was delayed due to Trade Unions, design changes, money and bad weather, delays are common in every project.

NHS Database was a contractor withdrawal, again, not the methodology

Project Planners freezing! That is what project managers are paid for - to create a plan and act where there is nothing there before!!!

Hi clooven, if you get the Prince 2 book before the foundation exam revise it. If you dont you will struggle a bit because you need to learn the structure of the Prince 2 organisation.

@clooven Go to diplotechnic. com and follow the instructions on the opening page to each module. When you have completed module 3 and can recite everything there in one hundred percent accurately you will be technically proficient in the workings of prince2. However, being technically proficient will not make you a good project manager because you will then have to spend a lot of time learning how to tailor and apply this information to each project that you undertake.

Errr, I strongly disagree. I have just sat (and passed) the new multi-choice practitioner exam, and believe me, its NOT easy. First of all, the time constraints are terrible. There is a 2 page case study, with 0 minutes allowed to read and digest it. The multiple choice questions are VERY ambiguous (unlike the foundation), and to be honest its 50/50 on MANY.

Agree strong with jamsie comments: the value of Prince2 is indeed how well an individual can apply it to a 'blank sheet', with no prior experience to draw from. Foundation is designed to make sure you remember the basics, but Practitioner must show how well you can apply the program in a real world setting and that cannot be adequately tested in a multiple choice environment.

Perhaps you just can't think of ways to test that in a multiple choice environment. I've done several microsoft MCSD exams covering the Microsoft Solutions Framework. They managed to quite nicely design multiple choice exams to test exactly that. I don't see why it should be any more of a problem for the Prince 2 exams.

As a Prince2 Practitioner I find it unbelievable that we are now talking about offering the answers on the paper for candidates to choose from - this is foundation level stuff. My view on this is simple, we are devaluing the Practitioner paper by making it a "multiple choice" and more importantly, if project managers are going to "freeze" at the site of a blank page than maybe they should think about another career! Sorry but this doesn't get my vote.

Yes, anyone who still freezes at the sight of a blank page shouldn't pass a project management exam! Maybe the candidates shouldn't have to use pens, just in case writing instruments make them light-headed...
