Of course, had this actually occurred during the later conflict (as you wrongly say, "dumbass"), Russia would have been especially justified in shooting down any UAV surveillance aircraft reconnoitering it's forces for possible attack.

Somehow people tend to believe that UAV's are some sort of "good" airplanes, wheter they do spy flights, attack ground targets or get shot down. "A UAV attack killed 20 civilians" - "no problem, it was just a UAV, if it was an F-16 it would be murder, but since its a UAV its fine...". Same goes for this incident. "Unarmed, unmanned UAV" So?? The UAV is a spy aircraft just like any other, just that the pilot controls it by remote, if it was a Su-25 doing recon it would've gotten shot down as well

Yeah your correct there. It's a cycle of develop then counter. What's interesting is that the MoD have no plans to develop fighter jets after F35/EF T3 and are seriously looking at replacing these eventually with AI controlled stealth UAV's. Expensive shit though. That prototype alone costs £140,000,000 and things will get allot more expensive next year when they push the tech forwards (Scram jet, hgh energy laser tech etc). Not really. MiG-29 has got higher thrust to weight ratio (it can accelerate faster), it is more agile and way better armed (common Sidewinders are no match for the R-73 or even the older R-60, Sparrows are no match the R-27 and R-77 is comparable to AMRAAM - newer AMRAAM versions have got a slightly higher range, R-77 is somewhat faster). The MiG-29 pilot has got a helmet-mounted targeting system so he can target the enemy just by looking at them.
