Minor threat are everything but Punk, they started teh band because they hated punks... there are enaugh interviews of them where you can hear them explain it themselves. Punk bands have made it big, be it in their own cliche way or going more mainstream. EVERY music type is not going to be as popular/sell out like top 40 garbage. How many Grateful Dead (not punk, but cliche in the same manner) songs made the charts? That a person has not heard of Minor Threat is easily understood, though if the person is really into punk music, and they haven't heard of the Sex Pistols/Ramones/Black Flag/etc. then they don't care about understanding its roots.

While it may be a little disappointing that I can't really discuss punk bands with my friends in any depth, I don't blame them, hell, I didn't really know anything about punk until a year or so ago. If anything it's a chance to introduce them to a whole subculture and genre of music, and whole counter cultural, revolutionary niche in human history.

@ThePunkSkunk I'm not jacking you up in any fashion, but Minor Threat is reason Nirvana existed. Dave Grohl was the drummer of Scream for a bit; Scream was a DC band. Minor Threat/Black Flag/Misfits (though they were from NJ). Talk about what you know about.

Punk bands have made it big, be it in their own cliche way or going more mainstream. EVERY music type is not going to be as popular/sell out like top 40 garbage. How many Grateful Dead (not punk, but cliche in the same manner) songs made the charts? That a person has not heard of Minor Threat is easily understood, though if the person is really into punk music, and they haven't heard of the Sex Pistols/Ramones/Black Flag/etc. then they don't care about understanding its roots.

@ThePunkSkunk Totally agreed. I'm 17, so to people in my generation punk is even more obscure than in past ones. While it may be a little disappointing that I can't really discuss punk bands with my friends in any depth, I don't blame them, hell, I didn't really know anything about punk until a year or so ago. If anything it's a chance to introduce them to a whole subculture and genre of music, and whole counter cultural, revolutionary niche in human history.
