  • I have LIFE!

  • Thank you! :-)

  • I love the accent. I am doing many tutorials right now and i will use this one thursday.

  • Thank you Stephen Silver.

  • excellet

  • Do you use a tablet display (drawing directly on the display) or just a regular tablet (separate from the display)? What kind are you using? Is it a tablet laptop or one of those super-expensive Cintiq displays? I have a cheap wacom tablet but I have a hard time drawing that way. I like to draw on the display... pen making direct contact with the line I am laying down. Big difference to me. I can't spend $2000 just for a display. So I might get a tablet/laptop but I don't know what kind to get.

  • well, in the beginning of the video he says he's using a Cintiq

  • ok guess i missed it. i would like suggestions for something other than the cintiq particularly a tablet/laptop combo because, as I said, I'm on a limited budget. Its one thing to upgrade to a whole new laptop (overdue) but I can't drop two grand on just a display. Wacom has a new Cintiq-like display that is smaller for $1000 but its still too costly for just a display. I have been dirt poor and saving for a long time.

  • equipment doesnt help you draw better. Shelling 2k for a fancy tool is only worth it once you master the basics.

  • yes, thank you. I would like to transition from scanning paper to working digitally. It would save time (especially for animation) and resources (paper, pens, paints, etc).

Its a question of technology... what do other people with similar interests think about different tablets? Any favorite brand names?

I have been drawing for a long time. I know time practicing and dedication are the only things that make you better. I am here as a fan of Silver's. I am already a freelance illustrator.

  • Wacom (the company that produces the Cintiq) is pretty much the industry standard, and make really excellent tablets. I would probably advise going with one of their regular tablets to start with if you're moving to digital work, since a fairly large portion of pros are more than happy with those. If you really find yourself preferring digital work then maybe at some time in future you can move to a cintiq or tablet pc, but to start a regular tablet should be fine.

  • i have a regular tablet which works well for some tasks but its uncomfortable drawing on the tablet while looking away at the screen when you are used to drawing directly on the surface and constantly tilting the page on the fly for better angles. You would think that with technology like the new Apple i-phone/i-touch that they could make a more portable/durable screen based wacom that was more like a regular tablet in size and weight and didn't have a 4-digit price tag. That would be awesome.

  • The larger the screen is, the harder it is to produce at a low price. The problem is a combination of power consumption, miniturisation of components (so you don't end up with something the size of a CRT) and lack of R&D. The Cintiq range is the first of it's kind for major distribution, which means it costs more. Give it some time and the price should drop a lot, since demand is high enough to encourage more R&D and eventually decrease the price and size (at least I hope it will :p)

  • Oh, and if you're only wanting something small for sketching, the Nintendo DS application "Colors" has been becoming quite popular. I think you need a homebrew kit to get it working though, which is a little annoying

  • wow, that's interesting. i'll check it out. and yeah, hopefully sometime in the near future... they will have more distribution and come out with more lower end models that aren't so expensive and more durable. Not so delicate and expensive. It would be great if they created a laptop/tablet designed specifically for art... something durable, powerful yet portable and lightweight and within a reasonable price since most artists are starving. ha ha. jk.

  • Considering it only took them 1-2 years to shrink the Cintiq down to the size it is now, I'd say chances are fairly high of something appearing withing the next 5 years to fill the role of "student" product in their Cintiq range, much like the Volito and Bamboo have with their regular tablet range. There's a huge market out there, so when they can release it I'm sure they will.

As for the tablet PC, we can always dream, can't we? ;)

  • I might just save up for the Cintiq 12WX that's ONLY $999. Maybe by the time I save up, they will come out with an even lighter and cheaper screen tablet. I don't need anything high-end, just something basic but lets you work directly on the surface. I really look forward to working this way. Tons of benefits especially for animation. Ever scan, line/clean up hundreds of frames? Not much fun. Helps to have a scanner with an auto sheet feeder. A screen tablet would waste less paper and time. :)

  • very helpful. i look forward to more

  • I have a UC-Logic tablet I bought new off Ebay for 53 dollars including shipping. Frankly, I'm just not about to spend even a hundred dollars on a tablet, I ain't made of money.

And to be honest, the tablet I have is plain amazing, does everything you could possibly do. And there's a steady stream of them on ebay.

Go to ebay and search that, that's the exact tablet I bought.
