AustralianWolf11 but in his last race the Aussie Newspapers ran to Headlines one claiming him if he won and one calling him a Kiwi if he lost. Still this is all in fun I joke about this with my Aussie mates in Bangkok every year just fun. But hey if you guys want to claim something Kiwi for your own don't make it Pharlap, take Russell Crowe.
Pharlap was the best of the best, The Best there was the best there is and the best there ever will be. It is an insult to his name that you even try to rate scum houses against him but the biggest insult is people call him Australian when he was a Kiwi
Amazes me how few people understand that virtually any horse racing in Phar Lap's era was being fed tonics that included arsenic, along with other ingredients that are still, to this day, used in homeopathic remedies. The most common ingredients were used to prevent or minimise colic and cramp. They were legal at the time, and cannot in any way be accurately compared to performance-enhancing substances like the use of anabolic steroids in human athletes.
I'd still like to have seen pharlap and secretariat run ! someone said pharlap wasn't trained for distance I have no idea I don't know anything about this.correct me if i'm wrong
@mrboppman1 He won 2 Derbys, both 12f, won 3 times at 14f, won over 2 1/4 miles, and came 3rd in the Melbourne Cup over 2 miles at 3yo. At 4yo he won 3 times at 12f and won the Melbourne Cup carrying 9st 12lb. At 5yo he won once at 12f and once at 2 miles, his only miss was thee Melbourne Cup where he was given 10st 10lb. Discounting his 2yo season, he raced 46 times, 35 times over 9f or further. Hope this helps. :)
You can not compare horses from different eras. Phar Lap dominated the tracks in the 1930s, whilst Sec was a star in the 1970s. That's a 40 year time gap, a huge amount of time for horse racing and technology to evolve. A horse in the 30s would have never had access to the medical practices, balanced feeds, training techniques, farriers, racing surfaces, jockey riding styles etc that a horse in the 70s had. What would have Sec been like in the 30s, or what would have Phar Lap done in the 70s?
Guys. stop this shit about Phar Lap vs Secretariat. they both had the antiques. Phar lap. Didnt win all his races but he had stamina and he was the first horse to be found to have an over sized heart. Secretariat. won pretty much all hsi races and had the same size heart. They were both good runners. End of story
I don't want to be involved in the argument of Secretariat vs Phar Lap. What I want to address is the difference between height and size. Sec. was probably the bigger horse, Phar Lap the taller. Sec. was a big, very muscular horse that liked to eat like two horses, which is one of the reasons Lucien Laurin had to put him through very hard workouts. Don't believe the Wiki figures, they had trouble keeping Sec. down near 1200 lbs.
@manikato75 Phar Lap had a bigger girth, but was less muscular than Secretariat, and had a smaller neck and a narrower chest. But what would you expect from a non-stallion. Secretariat's neck was like that of a heavy horse! And like the other guy said, he ate as much as two racehorses. By the way, what happened to So You Think at Ascot? - beaten by Rewilding (who?!).
@manikato75 Hahaha!!! Someone on here already pointed out that Phar Lap was only taller and fatter than Secretariat (LOL!). You see, when a horse loses its balls, all the major muscles (neck, chest etc...) shrink and their belly gets bigger! That's why Phar Lap had to be given stimulants in order to beat those plodders he ran against, and even then he was slow compared to Sec and others. Keep dreaming dummy!
@rcschumann ,keep it real buddy, the only reason why they looked like plodders ,cause THE RED TERROR made every horse look second rate including Sec,who lost 2 of his last 3 races and was on the way down no wonder they retired him.
@manikato75 I already told you that Sec won his last two races, demolishing both fields of older turf champions - so how can he be on his way down, you dummy! Think a little. They retired him because his owner got a $6,000,000 syndication deal early in his 3 yr old career, which specified that he be retired to stud at the end of the '73 season. Would you cancel a deal like that and continue racing your horse? Plus, his owner's stable was in financial trouble and that deal saved them.
@manikato75 The only horse that could have given Sec a good contest was Dr. Fager, and only up to 1 mile - but I would give the edge to Sec, who smashed Doc's time by two seconds at the 1 mile Gotham, with a bad start. The Bid was a legend, but he wouldn't beat Secretariat over 1 1/4 and certainly not over 1 1/2. Sec matched Bid's 1 1/4 of 1:57 4/5 at the Marlboro Cup, PULLING UP past the wire after setting the WR for 1 1/8. Bid set his time on a fast, slightly downhill track in California.
My family are flemington blood, my uncle was offered Pipping Lane before it became a champion and my uncle jack was a jockey in flemington in the 1920's.
Hey manikato75, you stupid yankee, always bragging that you are better that everyone else, when all you are is a bunch of arrogant dicks. Pharlap cannot be compared to secretits what ever his name is or any other American horse, he was too superior to any horse that ever lived even the modern horses. I don't give a shit what records say. He would have ripped apart any opponent that they put againts him, shut the fuck up before you embarss yourself any further MORON.
Bear in mind in serretariat days and today, jockeys actually never touch the horses hind / back apart from there feet.
The Melbourne cup races today is ran at 3200,pharlap melbourne cups was ran at 3218,18 meters longer than divas three cup wins- could the diva last 18 meters longer? or even secretariat?
Has anyone notice how the jockeys rode the horses back in 20's and 30's?
Compared to ,scariets days and todays race horses, jockeys in 20's and 30's actually sat on the horses backs and rode create more wieght and cause the horses to run not at there full power, and jockeys today have more educated ways and skills to make a horse go fatser and pharlap won great races in this matter, the olden day way!
pharlaps heart was bigger than the average heart size of a horse means nothing its all heart and grit just john henery would tell all of you this if was alive and could talk
Give it a rest.....two different horses, two different time periods in history, two different kinds of racing styles....(the only thing the same about them was that they were both Thoroughbreds...with different bloodlines).
And Secretariat wasn't on steriods ....geesh manikato you sound like a PETA Idiot!!
@MrSherpey you may think that cause u dont understand the purity of horse racing and dont really appreciate what the RED TERROR achieved,no horse has come near since or before
@MrSherpey Thank you. Some one with some sense. All the arguments about which is the best horse are silly. Can't compare horses from different generations that never raced each other. Track conditions, training, diet, everything changes and everything evolves.
Phar Lap was not a combination of Seabiscuit at all do you even know what you are talking about. Phar Lap was the greatest racehorse that has ever lived.
Phar Lap. BEST HORSE EVER!!!!!!!! Secritariat........ meh he was good. Seabiscuit.........a lil better, but Phar Lap IS THE BEST. this rscarbro100 guy can go shove all his 'facts' where the sun don't shine bcuz as far as I'm conserned Phar Lap was the best horse of his time. He's the type of horse that proves that you dont need flashy parents to be good. Even tho Phar Laps great great grandsire was the GREATEST HORSE EVER, CARBINE WHO'S BLOOD IS IN ALMOST EVERY SINGLE THOROUGHBRED TODAY!!!!
people please stop fighting over who is the best out of phar lap and secretariet, in my oppinion phar lap was the better horse but secretariet and phar lap were both strong and week in diferent areas, phar lap only lived 6 years and look at all he accmoplished in 6 years and secretariet lived alot longer then 6 years, think of what more phar lap could of accomplished if he lived longer
Too many numpties trying to compare horses that raced 40 years apart. Ridiculous. We should be appreciating them for what they were, not arguing over what they may have been.
It took phar lap in the Agua Caliente race about 44 seconds to get around thoses horses to take the lead. Secretariat in the Preakness took ony 22 seconds to go to the front. Twice as fast than Phar Lap took. Phar Lap record was broken the following year by a 'Has Been' in Gallant Sir. Secretariat record has only been tied in all these years. Secretariat clearly the best and fastest of all times. Only in Australia he has a chance to be #1.
Phar Lap as a 4 year old and well matured raced against 8 year old great great grandpa Amounis in the AJC Warwick Stakes 1 mile race. He ran until his tongue hung out but could not beat grandpa Amounis And he carried a little bit more weight than Phar Lap around 126 lbs or less. The time was a turle run in 1:38. Secretariat ran a workout in "MUD' not grass carring 126 lbs. in a jaw breaking 1:34 4/5 just easing along in fractions of 57 2/5, 1:09 1/5, 1:21 3/5 and the mile in 1:34 4/5. Holy cow
@rscarbro100 Amounis was a great miler and a hall of famer who beat by a short head,Sec was whipped by a donkey called Prove out by 4 lenghts and another mule called onion by 2 lenghts :-)
@manikato75 Hey little boy, YOU need to do better research! Secretariat's record was 21 starts - 16 wins, 3 seconds, 1 third and finishing out of the money only ONCE in his first race as a 2 year old. Phar Lap's record was 51 starts – 37 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds and 9 out of the money. The competition was much better in 1973 than in the early 1930s as well. Secretariat would've left Phar Lap or any other horse in the DUST in the Belmont - There' s NO comparison, Nice try, you lose!
@gipper1066 yes Phar Lap was late to mature, just a reminder gimp, sec lost 3 of his last 10 races not bad,Phar Lap lost 3 of his last 35 races keep it real gimpy
@manikato75 "Late to mature"... how stupid of a statement is that, you little puss? Phar Lap LOST FOURTEEN races, you idiot, so go find yourself a little reality check for ONCE in your pathetic life. 2:24 in 1 1/2 miles on the dirt at the Belmont Stakes... no other horse has touched 2:25 and not even the Great Phar Lap would be able to either! Sorry, you lose (as usual). Now go play with the rest of the kids, where you're better suited!
@gipper1066 this just proves u have no idea about horse racing, yes u gimp Phar Lap was late to mature, his last 35 races he lost only 3,Sec's last 10 races he lost 3,he was on the way down!!,u meathead in Australia or europe they dont run on dirt so that time for 1 1/2mile was smashed years ago so it means nothing, little girl go learn sumthing u reject
@manikato75 Also, little boy, Phar Lap's heart at his autopsy was 13.6 pounds. Secretariat's heart at his autopsy was 22 pounds, over 2 times the normal size of a horse's heart. Both horses were absolutely great, no question, but Secretariat was a freak of nature, made to run and race. Again, try and do some more research next time before you spill your pompous dribble on here!
@gipper1066 ,bahahaha, big deal,Sec was 16.2 hands hence little red,Phar Lap was 17.1 hands hence THE RED TERROR,Sec had a girth of 75inches Phar Lap had a girth of 79 inches, keep it real gimp
@manikato75 really, little puss, you OBVIOUSLY have a warped sense of reality, don't you? You only show your real stupidity by trying to tell everyone that a horse's body size matters more than a horse's heart size? You OBVIOUSLY know NOTHING about horses, do you? True horse people KNOW that horses with larger hearts pump blood faster and intake oxygen at a much better pace, which in turn makes them running machines! Get over yourself little puss... eveyone else did! hahahahaha
@gipper1066 Thats great he can have a bigger heart,THE RED TERROR would still of kicked Sec's ass,Sec lost 2 of his last 3 races on dirt Phar Lap 3 of his last 35 meat axe!!
Phar Lap's girth 79 inches
Sec's girth 75 inches
Phar Lap 17.1 hands( BIG RED)
Sec 16.2hands( LITTLE RED )
Go dribble sumwhere else ill teach u sumthing else dumb ass
made to run and race hey!! did Sec win over 2 miles NO
@manikato75..well said mate just seen there movie on secretariat, thought it was a hollywood remake of phar lap then seen your post hahaha, they call sec big red in the movie hadta laugh there was only one BIG RED/phar lap/not to mention phar lap was poisioned by seppos.
@manikato75 Everyone who knows anything about horse racing KNOWS that horses are gauged by their heart size FIRST, Dipshit, not body size! Why? Because the larger the heart means that horse is able to pump blood at a much faster rate than a normal horse (like Phar Lap). A horse can be a giant, yet still be slow because he doesn't have the heart! Guess thats why Phar Lap LOST so many races in his short life (14) against amateur competition! You know NOTHING about horse racing, OBVIOUSLY!
@gipper1066 ,little boy i know yr a little slow here it is again... Phar Lap's girth 79 inches Sec's girth 75 inches Phar Lap 17.1 hands( BIG RED) Sec 16.2hands( LITTLE RED ) Go dribble sumwhere else ill teach u sumthing else dumb ass made to run and race hey!! did Sec win over 2 miles NO did sec carry 143 pounds AND win NO did sec win 4 grade races in 7 days NO THE RED TERROR LOST 3 OF HIS LAST 35 RACES Sec lost 3 of his last 10 races!! smell the cheese and wake up!!
@manikato75 You stupid monkey! Phar Lap, that horse with no balls, was nothing compared to Secretariat. Phar Lap never won a race by accelerating every 1/4 mile from start to finish, like Sec did at KD and Belmont. Sec was a monster - Phar Lap was a stinking half-horse with no balls! Actually, Aussie racing in general is garbage compared to American. They have never produced anything to compare with the likes of Secretariat, Dr. Fager, The Bid etc...Did you get that, Aussie ex-criminal?
@manikato75 Yeah, 17.1 hands and no balls! LOL!! Sec would have eaten that castrate, half-horse for breakfast. When I said monster, I meant Sec's heart, stamina and overall power, you dummy. Yes, Phar Lap was less than one hand bigger - wow!! But did he ever win a race by accelerating every 1/4 mile from start to finish, like Sec did at KD and Belmont? Keep it real, descendant of a British criminal, keep it real.
@rcschumann actually Secretariat is a descendant of the 1890 Melbourne Cup winner Carbine as is Phar Lap. It's such a shame that so many of you have to be immature and fight over who is better. They are all champions because they were the best of their era.
@rcschumann Secretariat didn't have arsenic, belladonna, cociane, caffine & stryehnine running through his veins like Phar Lap did. We all know & on record he was given small quantities as 'Stimulants' before each race. Its all in the diary book owned by Tommy Woodcock his trainer. Scumbag bias Manikato won't ever tell you this stroy my good man. Pahr Lap was a champion of nothing accept for riding a ship to America. Hehehe
@rscarbro100 So true! After beating those donkeys in Australia, his only great accomplishment was travelling to America to set a time in a race that was broken by 2nd tier US horse, Gallant Sir!
@rcschumann Gallant Sir was a nobody. Nothing of substance. Hell, if a doneky like him could break Phar Lap time then that tells you hell of a lot about Phar Lap. They contend he had a cracked hoof in the Auga race. Probably did but never fear they gave him morphine. He would not have know if he had one leg missing. Look at his skelton after he died. It looked as a horse of 40 years. Woodcock did one hell of a job on him. Weight don't mean shit racing against donkies & shot up full of dope.
@rcschumann Manikato calims he did not come into his own until early in his 3 yr. old season. He's right but it was not coming into his own. This is when Woodcock started feeding him that love potion #9 as I call it. He started to win after that carring more weight. Still beating junkie horses. Horses of no substance. I can't blame the Aussies rooting for him because he was all they had blowing him up like a balloon. Well that dope helped a lot too. Felt sorry for him the way they treated him.
@rscarbro100 It's understood that Phar Lap is a gelding - and there is nothing wrong with pointing this out - but why do you continue to make such lewd and rude comments about his castration?
Yes, a decrease in testosterone can affect muscle developement, but to be frank your immature comments about testicles are childish. Considering your comments frequently include the mention of Phar Lap's lack of testicles, then one might find your obsession with horse testicles somewhat concerning.
@squirttle92 I have no damm idea what in the hell your talking about. I never mention nothing about him having no balls. My only points here lately has been his 'ASSHOLE' trainer Woodcock gave him all that doped up shit which is on "RECORD". You got the wrong guy. You better go back & read my post again.
Respond to this video...Oh by the way Secretariat didn't travel to the other side of the world and win either. Not to say he couldn't, I have more respect for champions than you do.
OK., getting sick of hearing about this argument whether PharLap was an Australian or New Zealand horse so Im a set the record straight. PharLaps mother was a failed English racehorse sold to New Zealand cheap.., the New Zealand owners simply mated her and sent a mange ridden horse to Australia. Thats not breeding., thats just looking for a quick buck. Tommy who fell in love with PharLap is the only person who deserves any credit for that horses great heart!
@mysty0 You really need to go back and research some more. Would you like me to send you a link of Phar Lap's lineage? Phar Lap' s dam was Entreaty who was, like Phar Lap born and bred in New Zealand. HIs sire, Night Raid was sold to a New Zealand stud in Timaru where Phar Lap was born. Phar Lap was first sold to a kiwi trainer who passed him on to an Australian. In any case, Phar Lap has connections to BOTH countries.
@NZBeth You mean like the link I just mailed you? Look., not going to argue the matter so fuck off already! The facts remain he was sold to Harry Telford for a lousy price after being mistreated by NZ'rs and ever since NZ has been wailing trying to claim credit for him. GET THE FUCK OVER IT!! As far as Im concerned ALL credit for PharLap goes to TOMMY and noone else., nothing you say can or will change my impression!!
@mysty0 I am not trying to change your impression, hard headed people like yourself refuse to see blatant flaws in their own reasoning in the face of evidence. Particularly when they have to resort to swearing in an attempt to get their point across. Enough said
@NZBeth Yes of course., I do so apologise! I realise the error of my way and now Ive learnt that all credit due PharLap is due his NZ breeding and NZ training and NZ owners. Australia had no hand in his greatness at all! I realise now that you even deserve credit for PharLaps greatness because had it not been for you PharLap may never have became anything. Please forgive the error of my ways!!
@mysty0 Get over it. He was a NZ horse through and through. Quit crying about facts little boy. Boo Hoo. Need a hanky or tissues little cry baby Aussie "RAT'? Our own little "SISSY" girl Zenyatta could whip Phar Lap ass any day of the week. That Phar Lap was a "JOKE". Try putting a cherry bomb up his ass and light it. That might help him to run a better time. "Times Ran" don't mean anything to you all dumb asses because Phar Lap never could run them. What a turtle. Holy Toledo.
I saw this movie when I was a teenager and when I left the theatre I was bawling my eyes out. To this day, I don't think I could ever watch that movie again. Just breaks my heart.
Im aussie and love the phar lap story and it is always imposs to compare them from different generations but from what I have read and seen most experts of breeding and racing history say that both Man O war and Secretariat where as perfect as can be.
@bobodd5 Actually, Phar Lap's heart was twice the normal size it should have been, therefore, allowing more oxygen into the bloodstream, endurance levels are increased, making him able to run faster then anyone else he is racing against. Also, a horse will keep losing until the trainer finds out what make a horse tick (though not always the case) And if you think Phar Lap was drugged, then maybe so was Secretariat, Man O' War, and Seabiscuit.
@bbmtge YOU think it is laughable cuz you are an ignorant f**k who doesnt know how to retain any knowledge from school (that is, if you even graduated). Get a life and start researching before you post your crap trash-talk...you moron.
@tiki20021 School??? You talk about school and you can't even spell. Congratulations!!! It appears you were taught cause and effect, linear thinking. Keep reading articles and claiming them as your own. If you think horseracing is one-dimensional, then you are as ignorant as your last 2 posts. tiki, tinkle.
@bbmtge Excuse me, but nothing in what i wrote was spelled incorrectly, if you knew how to spell, you would have known that...MR KNOW-IT-ALL. Your manners is just as good as your healthcare down there, non-existent. LMAO. You must not have enough time on your hands, or any lie at all, if all you can do is just sit your ass on your computer and respond to Youtube videos all day. I only responded to show how stupid you really are.
@tiki20021 You are a bit old to be playing "hip-hop" with your spelling if that's what you want to call it. I guess your entitlement complex allows your foul mouthed commentray to be excused. Funny how you don't seem to address the subject at all. Too funny. Especially the caps and lmao that the juve's (or in your case wanna be juve's) use.
Phar Lap won 37 races from 51 starts, but in saying that consider this, he was notoriously slow to becoming great winning only 1 of his first 9 starts and not even placing in the other 8!!! the rest is history 33 from his last 35, and then theres the history many Americans don't know about, this horse was handicapped like no other horse in history, it was the entire racing commission againest him, assassination attempts , ect
Poisoned to death by a money hungry human idiot that didn't want his horse to lose to Phar Lap. Chalk another one up for human ignorance! The destruction of all things good will inevitably come from a human being!
The great thing about Phar Lap was that they just could not stop him winning. They handicapped him again and again, with more and more weight, but still he kept winning. If he wasn't murdered by the gangsters, he would have proved his greatness beyond a doubt.
And, Junmai, if you're talking about a career, then Kincsem craps on Man o' War. 54 starts, 54 wins.
Can someone explain to me why Phar Lap was such a legend? Was it just because he raised the spirits of everyone when he made lots of wins during the Great Depression?
(I'm not saying I don't think he shouldn't be such a legend; I just want to learn more because... well, I have no idea, lol).
He inspired, he bought hope to a nation during troubled times... he gave people something to hope for I suppose. Plus he was a great race horse who pretty much defied all the odds. People went to great lengths to try and stop him from becoming the champion that he was ... and still he pushed on. It's a remarkeable story.
In Mexico, the expert trainers there told Tommy Woodcock to change to different shoes (because of the track serface difference). Tommy didn't do it and phar Lap caught a stone in training, which cracked the hoof wall.
So get the right info before trying to answer.
Phar Lap is a Legend- and the correct story should be told...
Equipoise? Both he and Phar Lap had 51 Starts, Equipoise won 29, Phar Lap 37. Equipoise only rated 21st on USA all time list. Phar Lap, saw him in Melbourne, 2006 and some 20 children no older than 10 all burst into the room fighting for a glimpse of Big Red. His feats speak for themselves and his legend lives on 70+ years later in the eyes of those not yet old enough to wager a bet on this argument. He's always the benchmark and any modern day champion is always "the best since PHAP LAP!"
Phar Lap & Nightmarch were not brothers, they shared the same sire, in the game of racing thats not the same thing. Nightmarch was another grand Kiwi racehorse yet not in the same league. Yes he beat The Red Terror in 1929, but Phar Lap was only a 3 yr old running in the cup 3 days after smashing the race record for The Derby. In 1930 he won on all 4 days of the carnival, inclusive of the cup, anyone with half a nut will tell you this feat will never be repeated. He was the greatest bar none.
Everytime I go on utube I play this video, a stunning tribute to one of the worlds greatest racehorses.....well done to you. Although I can understand why they stuffed him and put him in a museum, I cant help thinking that an end most befitting of such a racing great should be to be buried in first place at the finish line as that is where Pharlap spent most of his time....... there, and in the hearts of the millions of people whose lives he touched with his courage and presence.
Sorry, but Secretariat would have... 2:24 at 1 1/2 miles for the world record - no horse has ever even touched 2:25 (plus a 31 length win). Phar Lap was a very great horse, yes. So was Seabiscuit and Man O' War, but Secretariat was simply the best ever!
Depends on how you define the best. With all those horses in their primes yes, I'd take Secretariat. But if you take their entire bodies of work into account (i.e. a career), then Man O War wins uncontested. 20 wins in 21 races is just ridiculous.
And no mention of the only unbeaten triple crown winner in racing history? Also the only horse to beat another triple crown winning horse. The immortal Seattle Slew deserves consideration.
Phar Lap would of smashed Secretariat, horse racing isnt just about times u know,Sec was a champion but still far behind what Phar Lap achieved,he won 4 races in a week, won a group1, 2 mile race with 138 pounds, travelled 12000kms to mexico for the worlds richest race, against american horses and smashed them with a cracked hoof, summer coat, raced on dirt for the 1st time and a track record, won 33 from his last 35 starts, greatest of all!!
-including jockey Eddie Arcaro, New York State Steward Francis Dunne and Marshall Cassidy, who succeeded his father as dean of American racing officials--
as the greatest thoroughbred ever to race on the American continent. What is more striking, the horse concerned gained his lofty stature in exactly 2 minutes 2 4/5 seconds. Phar Lap.
Go watch the Phar Lap movie Buddy,Check out Agua Calinete race 1932
@manikato75 Woot., now thats stating it as it is. The last line says it all., had he been american he would be the greatest ever. This new Secretariat movie is nothing but a reskin of PharLap.., now apparently Secretariat is the BIG RED TERROR.., now apparently Secretariat had a heart larger than PharLaps.., now apparently a horse shorter than PharLap had a measured stride some 2-3 feet longer than PharLaps. Fucking typical of the yanks
@horseracer18 ,what i was trying to say,was if Phar lap was american, they would claim Phar Lap is the greatest, but cause Phar Lap is not american, they dont know about him
@manikato75 If Phar Lap was an American horse they would have kicked him out of the country before he was 3 years of age or sent him to the meat house. He couldn't win against real competition in which they had totally none over in Aussie outback country nor he face totally nothing at Agua. He is just like Zenyatta. When she did face some competition to speak of like Blame, lights out.
Phar Lap was a joke at 2 years of age & never could run fast times like Secretariat in all the years he ran.

@ChampionDark1 umm lets just say hes both kiwi and australian...since Phar Lap was trained and raced in Australia and be was foaled in NZ (:

@SusMerkava Secretariat was 16.2hh not 17.2hh, but if you're wanting a modern day height comparison to Phar Lap, Zenyatta is 17.2hh.

You can not compare horses from different eras. Phar Lap dominated the tracks in the 1930s, whilst Sec was a star in the 1970s. Guys. stop this shit about Phar Lap vs Secretariat. they both had the antiques. Phar lap. Didnt win all his races but he had stamina and he was the first horse to be found to have an over sized heart. Secretariat. won pretty much all hsi races and had the same size heart. They were both good runners. End of story
katnjas 9 months ago 12
@katnjas said well, there both as good as anything, 1 in a million!
oxTuckerAndSkyexo 8 months ago
@oxTuckerAndSkyexo Thank you, they both had their values
katnjas 8 months ago
I don't want to be involved in the argument of Secretariat vs Phar Lap. What I want to address is the difference between height and size. Sec. was probably the bigger horse, Phar Lap the taller. Sec. was a big, very muscular horse that liked to eat like two horses, which is one of the reasons Lucien Laurin had to put him through very hard workouts. Don't believe the Wiki figures, they had trouble keeping Sec. down near 1200 lbs.
711ATOM 10 months ago
@711ATOM Wrong Sec was 16.2 hands tall Phar Lap 17.1 Sec girth was 75 inch Phar Lap a giant 79 inch
manikato75 9 months ago
@manikato75 Phar Lap had a bigger girth, but was less muscular than Secretariat, and had a smaller neck and a narrower chest. But what would you expect from a non-stallion. Secretariat's neck was like that of a heavy horse! And like the other guy said, he ate as much as two racehorses. By the way, what happened to So You Think at Ascot? - beaten by Rewilding (who?!).
BigPetrov 8 months ago
@BigPetrov Phar Lap 17.1 hands,sec 16.2 hands,Phar Lap 79 inches girth Sec 75 inches
Phar Lap BIG RED,Sec little red,
Did Sec carry 138 pounds as a four yr old over 2 miles and win?? NO!
By the way did you see So You Think whip the Arc and Derby winner WorkForce??,
shhh little man
manikato75 7 months ago
@manikato75 Hahaha!!! Someone on here already pointed out that Phar Lap was only taller and fatter than Secretariat (LOL!). You see, when a horse loses its balls, all the major muscles (neck, chest etc...) shrink and their belly gets bigger! That's why Phar Lap had to be given stimulants in order to beat those plodders he ran against, and even then he was slow compared to Sec and others. Keep dreaming dummy!
rcschumann 7 months ago
@rcschumann ,keep it real buddy, the only reason why they looked like plodders ,cause THE RED TERROR made every horse look second rate including Sec,who lost 2 of his last 3 races and was on the way down no wonder they retired him.
Spec Bid would of smacked Sec
keep dribbling ;-)
manikato75 7 months ago
@manikato75 I already told you that Sec won his last two races, demolishing both fields of older turf champions - so how can he be on his way down, you dummy! Think a little. They retired him because his owner got a $6,000,000 syndication deal early in his 3 yr old career, which specified that he be retired to stud at the end of the '73 season. Would you cancel a deal like that and continue racing your horse? Plus, his owner's stable was in financial trouble and that deal saved them.
rcschumann 7 months ago

Theaussiess 1 year ago
Has anyone notice how the jockeys rode the horses back in 20's and 30's?
Compared to ,scariets days and todays race horses, jockeys in 20's and 30's actually sat on the horses backs and rode create more wieght and cause the horses to run not at there full power, and jockeys today have more educated ways and skills to make a horse go fatser and pharlap won great races in this matter, the olden day way!
Theaussiess 1 year ago
pharlaps heart was bigger than the average heart size of a horse means nothing its all heart and grit just john henery would tell all of you this if was alive and could talk

Holy cow
rscarbro100 1 year ago
@rscarbro100 Amounis was a great miler and a hall of famer who beat by a short head,Sec was whipped by a donkey called Prove out by 4 lenghts and another mule called onion by 2 lenghts :-)
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 Hey little boy, YOU need to do better research! Secretariat's record was 21 starts - 16 wins, 3 seconds, 1 third and finishing out of the money only ONCE in his first race as a 2 year old. Phar Lap's record was 51 starts – 37 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds and 9 out of the money. The competition was much better in 1973 than in the early 1930s as well. Secretariat would've left Phar Lap or any other horse in the DUST in the Belmont - There' s NO comparison, Nice try, you lose!
gipper1066 1 year ago
@gipper1066 yes Phar Lap was late to mature, just a reminder gimp, sec lost 3 of his last 10 races not bad,Phar Lap lost 3 of his last 35 races keep it real gimpy
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 "Late to mature"... how stupid of a statement is that, you little puss? Phar Lap LOST FOURTEEN races, you idiot, so go find yourself a little reality check for ONCE in your pathetic life. 2:24 in 1 1/2 miles on the dirt at the Belmont Stakes... no other horse has touched 2:25 and not even the Great Phar Lap would be able to either! Sorry, you lose (as usual). Now go play with the rest of the kids, where you're better suited!
gipper1066 1 year ago
@gipper1066 this just proves u have no idea about horse racing, yes u gimp Phar Lap was late to mature, his last 35 races he lost only 3,Sec's last 10 races he lost 3,he was on the way down!!,u meathead in Australia or europe they dont run on dirt so that time for 1 1/2mile was smashed years ago so it means nothing, little girl go learn sumthing u reject
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 Also, little boy, Phar Lap's heart at his autopsy was 13.6 pounds. Secretariat's heart at his autopsy was 22 pounds, over 2 times the normal size of a horse's heart. Both horses were absolutely great, no question, but Secretariat was a freak of nature, made to run and race. Again, try and do some more research next time before you spill your pompous dribble on here!
gipper1066 1 year ago
@gipper1066 ,bahahaha, big deal,Sec was 16.2 hands hence little red,Phar Lap was 17.1 hands hence THE RED TERROR,Sec had a girth of 75inches Phar Lap had a girth of 79 inches, keep it real gimp
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 really, little puss, you OBVIOUSLY have a warped sense of reality, don't you? You only show your real stupidity by trying to tell everyone that a horse's body size matters more than a horse's heart size? You OBVIOUSLY know NOTHING about horses, do you? True horse people KNOW that horses with larger hearts pump blood faster and intake oxygen at a much better pace, which in turn makes them running machines! Get over yourself little puss... eveyone else did! hahahahaha
gipper1066 1 year ago
@gipper1066 Thats great he can have a bigger heart,THE RED TERROR would still of kicked Sec's ass,Sec lost 2 of his last 3 races on dirt Phar Lap 3 of his last 35 meat axe!!
Phar Lap's girth 79 inches
Sec's girth 75 inches
Phar Lap 17.1 hands( BIG RED)
Sec 16.2hands( LITTLE RED )
Go dribble sumwhere else ill teach u sumthing else dumb ass
made to run and race hey!! did Sec win over 2 miles NO
did sec carry 143 pounds AND win NO
did sec win 4 grade races in 7 days NO
u GIMP!!

mikeo79 1 year ago
@manikato75 Bloody well said!!!
CoUrTnEy69er 1 year ago 3
@manikato75 Everyone who knows anything about horse racing KNOWS that horses are gauged by their heart size FIRST, Dipshit, not body size! Why? Because the larger the heart means that horse is able to pump blood at a much faster rate than a normal horse (like Phar Lap). A horse can be a giant, yet still be slow because he doesn't have the heart! Guess thats why Phar Lap LOST so many races in his short life (14) against amateur competition! You know NOTHING about horse racing, OBVIOUSLY!

Fager, The Bid etc...Did you get that, Aussie ex-criminal?
rcschumann 10 months ago
@rcschumann ,Dribble dribble, your point is useless running against 5 horses isnt even a race,
You say Sec was a monster at 16.2 hands lol,THE RED TERROR was 17.1 hands a running machine ;-)
Phar Lap would of mopped the floor with all your champions thats how good RED TERROR was !!
Check the current rating, you will find BLACK CAVIAR rated No1 in the world and she is a sprinter 1st time ever that has happen,

Kepp it real dribbles
manikato75 10 months ago
@manikato75 Yeah, 17.1 hands and no balls! LOL!! Sec would have eaten that castrate, half-horse for breakfast. When I said monster, I meant Sec's heart, stamina and overall power, you dummy. Yes, Phar Lap was less than one hand bigger - wow!! But did he ever win a race by accelerating every 1/4 mile from start to finish, like Sec did at KD and Belmont? Keep it real, descendant of a British criminal, keep it real.
rcschumann 10 months ago
@rcschumann actually Secretariat is a descendant of the 1890 Melbourne Cup winner Carbine as is Phar Lap. It's such a shame that so many of you have to be immature and fight over who is better. They are all champions because they were the best of their era.
Constance861973 10 months ago
@rcschumann Secretariat didn't have arsenic, belladonna, cociane, caffine & stryehnine running through his veins like Phar Lap did. We all know & on record he was given small quantities as 'Stimulants' before each race. Its all in the diary book owned by Tommy Woodcock his trainer. Scumbag bias Manikato won't ever tell you this stroy my good man. Pahr Lap was a champion of nothing accept for riding a ship to America. Hehehe
rscarbro100 7 months ago
@rscarbro100 So true! After beating those donkeys in Australia, his only great accomplishment was travelling to America to set a time in a race that was broken by 2nd tier US horse, Gallant Sir!
rcschumann 7 months ago
@rcschumann Gallant Sir was a nobody. Nothing of substance. Hell, if a doneky like him could break Phar Lap time then that tells you hell of a lot about Phar Lap. They contend he had a cracked hoof in the Auga race. Probably did but never fear they gave him morphine. He would not have know if he had one leg missing. Look at his skelton after he died. It looked as a horse of 40 years. Woodcock did one hell of a job on him. Weight don't mean shit racing against donkies & shot up full of dope.
rscarbro100 7 months ago
@rcschumann Manikato calims he did not come into his own until early in his 3 yr. old season. He's right but it was not coming into his own. This is when Woodcock started feeding him that love potion #9 as I call it. He started to win after that carring more weight. Still beating junkie horses. Horses of no substance. I can't blame the Aussies rooting for him because he was all they had blowing him up like a balloon. Well that dope helped a lot too. Felt sorry for him the way they treated him.
rscarbro100 7 months ago
@rscarbro100 It's understood that Phar Lap is a gelding - and there is nothing wrong with pointing this out - but why do you continue to make such lewd and rude comments about his castration?
Yes, a decrease in testosterone can affect muscle developement, but to be frank your immature comments about testicles are childish. Considering your comments frequently include the mention of Phar Lap's lack of testicles, then one might find your obsession with horse testicles somewhat concerning.
squirttle92 7 months ago 2
@squirttle92 I have no damm idea what in the hell your talking about. I never mention nothing about him having no balls. My only points here lately has been his 'ASSHOLE' trainer Woodcock gave him all that doped up shit which is on "RECORD". You got the wrong guy. You better go back & read my post again.
rscarbro100 7 months ago
@rscarbro100 I apologize. That was aimed at rcschumann.

Tommy who fell in love with PharLap is the only person who deserves any credit for that horses great heart!
mysty0 1 year ago
@mysty0 You really need to go back and research some more. Would you like me to send you a link of Phar Lap's lineage? Phar Lap' s dam was Entreaty who was, like Phar Lap born and bred in New Zealand. HIs sire, Night Raid was sold to a New Zealand stud in Timaru where Phar Lap was born. Phar Lap was first sold to a kiwi trainer who passed him on to an Australian. In any case, Phar Lap has connections to BOTH countries.
NZBeth 1 year ago
@NZBeth You mean like the link I just mailed you? Look., not going to argue the matter so fuck off already! The facts remain he was sold to Harry Telford for a lousy price after being mistreated by NZ'rs and ever since NZ has been wailing trying to claim credit for him. GET THE FUCK OVER IT!! As far as Im concerned ALL credit for PharLap goes to TOMMY and noone else., nothing you say can or will change my impression!!
mysty0 1 year ago
@mysty0 I am not trying to change your impression, hard headed people like yourself refuse to see blatant flaws in their own reasoning in the face of evidence. Particularly when they have to resort to swearing in an attempt to get their point across. Enough said
NZBeth 1 year ago
@NZBeth Yes of course., I do so apologise! I realise the error of my way and now Ive learnt that all credit due PharLap is due his NZ breeding and NZ training and NZ owners. Australia had no hand in his greatness at all! I realise now that you even deserve credit for PharLaps greatness because had it not been for you PharLap may never have became anything. Please forgive the error of my ways!!

the reason it won was they drugged it
bobodd5 1 year ago
@bobodd5 Actually, Phar Lap's heart was twice the normal size it should have been, therefore, allowing more oxygen into the bloodstream, endurance levels are increased, making him able to run faster then anyone else he is racing against. Also, a horse will keep losing until the trainer finds out what make a horse tick (though not always the case) And if you think Phar Lap was drugged, then maybe so was Secretariat, Man O' War, and Seabiscuit.

I wish people would stop comparing horses. If you want to wave a secretariat flag, go to another video on him and let your statistics fly there.
This is a great video, fits the music perfectly!

Very Great horse! But what happened tho his leg?? The answer to this is whilst he was running he twisted his ankle and the hoof cut his foot
koberulez2k9 2 years ago
That's not what happened.

He wasn´t one of the best horses...HE WAS THE BEST! =)

I love phar lap!
No one could beat him ever!

Sorry, but Secretariat would have... 2:24 at 1 1/2 miles for the world record - no horse has ever even touched 2:25 (plus a 31 length win). Phar Lap was a very great horse, yes. So was Seabiscuit and Man O' War, but Secretariat was simply the best ever!
gipper1066 2 years ago
Depends on how you define the best. With all those horses in their primes yes, I'd take Secretariat. But if you take their entire bodies of work into account (i.e. a career), then Man O War wins uncontested. 20 wins in 21 races is just ridiculous.
And no mention of the only unbeaten triple crown winner in racing history? Also the only horse to beat another triple crown winning horse. The immortal Seattle Slew deserves consideration.

great clip btw
Phar Lap would of smashed Secretariat, horse racing isnt just about times u know,Sec was a champion but still far behind what Phar Lap achieved,he won 4 races in a week, won a group1, 2 mile race with 138 pounds, travelled 12000kms to mexico for the worlds richest race, against american horses and smashed them with a cracked hoof, summer coat, raced on dirt for the 1st time and a track record, won 33 from his last 35 starts, greatest of all!!
ps if he was american he'd be the best ever.

@manikato75 Interesting comment. Unable to prove, entirely speculative. Interesting logic; correction, thought process to make such a determination.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge There appeared in the West
an enormous gelding considered by many experts

@manikato75
Saying if he was American is a tad rude to Aussies....
but yes, he is an amazing horse.. and i agree, sec is a fantastic horse, but Phar Lap is gutsy and fast.. a true legend!
horseracer18 1 year ago
@horseracer18 ,what i was trying to say,was if Phar lap was american, they would claim Phar Lap is the greatest, but cause Phar Lap is not american, they dont know about him
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 If Phar Lap was an American horse they would have kicked him out of the country before he was 3 years of age or sent him to the meat house. He couldn't win against real competition in which they had totally none over in Aussie outback country nor he face totally nothing at Agua. He is just like Zenyatta. When she did face some competition to speak of like Blame, lights out.
Phar Lap was a joke at 2 years of age & never could run fast times like Secretariat in all the years he ran.
