  • "Red Hot Chili Peppers aren't better than The Meters and The Meters aren't better than Red Hot Chili Peppers. Both of them are great and no one band is better than the other"

None CAN be better, its not a sport!

  • RHCP need to get John back.

  • OK there's george where's leo?

  • was this all improv?

  • Check out the marshall stack. Thats just too cool, just everything about the whole thing.

  • Wow, the meters guitar player really sucked on this one. He cant play any soulful notes without shredding his ass off. Frusciante totally owned this guy lol.

  • Two of my favorite bands....And I missed them at VooDoo..... I could've gone back then!!!!!!!

  • This is so fucking aweseome! I've seen the chilis live twice with John, can't wait for their new album.

  • Lookin' for Zigaboo, sure I cannot find him here...

  • john's guitar sounds like if you have to ask

  • Epic. So many people in that audience probably had no idea what a fucking treat that was.

  • DOUBLE POWER! freakin great

  • There was fun bein had on stage...

  • whats with will ferrell playing the drums here?..heeeyoooo!!!

  • This is pretty cool, I know Kiedis grew up listening to the meters, must have been extra special for him.

  • Is Old school raw funk meets the 80s/90s Funkateers

  • John Frusciante is the lick but that guy playing the red Gibson is a monster player!!

  • effin SWEET!!!!

  • now that's some good gumbo there

  • 5:04-7:21 That's what you get when John Frusciante goes in a head to head guitar battle versus some down-syndrome guy. JK

  • Just phenomenal. Great to see musicians of this caliber just have some fun. Wish i could've been there.

  • You can hear G. Porter's P-bass rippin through the mix every now and then. **pprrrtt**

  • Thats why i fucks with chilli peppers since the 90s. My dude Flea always had some soul haha

  • chili peppers and the meters, can it get better?

  • x 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times better than justin bieber

  • @HolyGK no shit sherlock. dont you dare bring his name here for "thumbs ups" sake.

  • @HolyGK

Yeah so thanks for ruining it slightly by mentioning him.

  • John at 0:55 - Turn my mother fucking guitar up foo!! Time to shred off some faces what a badass xD

  • can anybody say SHRED!

  • wich is the song at the minute 3:30 or is an improvisation? sorry for my english!!!!

  • @metallofolle

the hand clapping song by the Meters

  • @metallofolle hand clapping song by the meters

  • @metallofolle Its called Hand Clap and its by the meters :)

  • John....amazing guitarist!

  • John....amazing guitarist!

  • Now these are two legends of funk, although its a shame the direction RHCP have taken in recent years they seem to have lost it. Should bring out one like the Uplift Mofo again, that was a classic

  • ....and yes, there it goes, my head just exploded due to the overwhelming awesomeness of this.

  • 2 of my favorite bands...thank you!!.

  • Many thanx for displacing true shows with real sounds of artistry like Meters & RHCP!!!!!

  • soooooo funky!!!!

  • It doesn't get much funkier than this

  • god, i love these two bands, but meters without zigaboo = not the meters....sorry chad...NOT hanging.

  • Leo Nocentelli is one of the best guitar players in the WORLD!!! You best believe it!

  • @WillOwenGage Actually zig was there, but you have to watch close since they don't show him much and he isn't lit well on the stage. See 3:40!

  • will ferrell on drums ladies and gentlemen

  • Two Bass titans... George Porter Jr and Flea on one stage! Amazing

  • Jam :)

  • thank you for posting twoof my favorite bands of all time ,made my day man!

    Respect nuff times !

  • easily one of the coolest videos on here

  • what is the song started at 3:22???

  • @WhiteDwarf18 The Meters - The Handclapping Song

  • @WhiteDwarf18 it's The Handclapping Song, a Meters classic.

  • john fucking rocks .come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @tokyojoband He doesn't really play any solos until the very end of the video though.

  • just Crazy !!!! Sure they feel something very strong !!

  • this is so nice to listen to!:D

    and you are right davidmangubat,

every band has a different play style.

so you can't say who the best is.

  • The chilli peppers learned well from the Meters, but the guitar sounds more like an Allman Brothers jam.Check the meters posting for the REAl FUNK!

  • I read in an interview that Flea was so nervous playing along side George Porter, thank you for uploading this!

  • Everytime i watch this awesome vid, I :

    1st - go crazy

2nd - fall in love with john lowl (this works also when i listen to one of his songs, when i see a video of him, etc etc)

3rd - feel bad for Anthony. It's like he doesn't know where to go. He's like trying to dance or feeling the music but... i don't get into it.

Those bands are amazing. And John's a god :D

  • flea: the bestone in the world

  • jesus man look how much fun theyre having!

  • love the dueling guitar solos, John goes for the killer wail and the other guy flutters across the fretboard. Frusciante is at his best here

  • @ia5662 It's not like he's went downhill, but he is on top form here.

  • It would be a utter pleasure to jam with any of them! :)

  • zig always lays it down but good lord the guitar wanking kinda goes nowhere. Must have been fun playing with Zig though. Little too much cream in the coffee for my taste

  • i love the way they all sing together, its so brilliant

  • anthony looks so out of place, looks like they all had a lot fun playing with them

  • AMAZING

  • my god zigaboo modiliste is amazing cissy strut is one of the funkiest grooves ever.

  • and the guitars conversed

  • does anyone know the name of the song in the beginning of the second jam. theres that rythem thats really funky but i dont know what it is

  • hand clapping song - the meters

  • had to come back, i wonder which douche gave everyone thumbs down, a joke or a souless clown that knows nothing of real music.

  • john is a perfect!

  • WoW first time ever hearing this... its amazing

  • is the first part a cover of the jam by graham central station?

  • i will never forgive myself for being blacked out during this performance and even though there cannot remember a single thing. now sober (8mo) maybe i can only wish something like this will happen again. george porter is music

  • oh my god perfect

  • hahahaha did someone just say "poor anthony" ????

Come on guys he is the leader of the greatest band in the world right now(personal opinion), i dont think you can feel sorry for him because he didnt participate in a jam...

  • Whoo!-Funk on a stick!

  • great guitar battle

  • @wybel7316 i dont think its a battle as much as its a duet....its incredible either way tho

  • Was totally there!

  • Criadores e criaturas! mutcho loco!

  • FREAKY AWESOME JAM

  • poor anthony... at least he can dance

  • lol seriously though he needs to learn an instrument or learn how to freestyle or sumthin...must suck being in a great band like that and have to sit on the side when the fun starts...

  • dude he gets to dance on stage with them. I would love love love to be able to jam with them. but i think it would be just as awesome to be able to dance along onstage

  • Haha. He could have rocked a Tambourine

during the jam. That is what most lead singers do!

  • my jaw is touching the ground

  • the last two minutes is insane

  • They should go on tour as the Red Hot Meters

  • that sir, is the smartest comment i have ever read!!

  • I'm loving the organs here. These guys need to tour together. Leo and John have great chemistry up there

  • from 5:30 - amazing, its like frusciante and the other guitarman speaks to eachother via the guitar

  • Saw it live. best part was they did this liike 20 min after the show so all the fags w/ their ol ladys and poser fans left so all us got a close up view

  • so jealous dude thats the number one thing for me to do b4 i die is see them live

  • I'm so jelous of you

  • poor anthony not being able to join in lol

  • anthony join in with the dance! lol

  • "Rockin to the beat of the funky ass meters"

  • the guitar duel at the end is epic

  • na just unsure when to jump in, thats what it looks like to me

  • I swear Chad looks a little scared at the beginning!

  • I WAS THERE!!! IT WAS AWESOME!

    -Sparky

  • Fucking brilliant ! And the ending !! Just fucking amazing !! :D

  • john must be very happy

  • Fru:) this is a pretty funkilicious song jam aye?

  • 5:35 fucking crazy solo

  • right on man.

  • Really fucking amazing!

  • check out the album the meteres did with DR JOHN

    I BEEN HOODOOD

    it is staggering

staggering ,, the bass is liquid hell ,,

    it is 24 carot FUNK,,,

  • Which CD is the hand clapping song of? Have heard it for years and couldn't place it...

  • check out the next generation of the meters...Poppa Funk's nephew, Aaron's son, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk ! ! !

  • RHCP drummer is good but check out the Meters recordings and listen Zigaboo on drums. He's one of the best.

  • 6:10

  • Can anyone recommened some artists similar to The Meters? Any suggestions would be great!

  • bands like Parliament Funkadelic, George Clinton, Tower of Power etc.

also, download a song called 'sookie sookie' by Grant Green, that's pretty similar but a bit more jazzy.

  • And you have to check out Mandrill and some of the early stuff by the Headhunters. Also heres a group of Aussie guys called Soul Investigators who really replicate the Meters sound quite well.

  • Freakin awesome. They always rock the house. Do you have any more vids from Voodoo fest?

  • Anthony feels so awkward :)

  • he always looks that way during jams nowadays. and he always looks that way when theyre playing with some legendary artist/band, with the exception of when George Clinton came on stage during their shows back in the day. so yeah, put those two together and he probably felt a bit out of place.

  • hey there buddy pal and everyone else..its not a competition!

  • remnugs:

That song at 3:02 is Handclapping Song, a Meters tune (my favorite one at that).

  • Oh shit this was fuckin awesome -- sorry for the cuss, but I couldn't express it otherwise xD

  • PS. I think RHCP would agree with me.

  • jesus whats that song that starts at 3:02-ish. or is it just a jam?

  • Aaaaaaaaa...when they starts playing th Handclapping song...it was amazing! And the guitar battle...absolutely fantastic :)

  • Paf, thanks :)

  • lo at about 6:17 john looks like he is in terrible pain

  • its called soul. playing with emotion. i love it.

  • What an amazing video! This is fantastic! Pls, can you help me? What is the songs name, at 3:02?

  • Handclapping Song.

  • only 64,000 views..that is sad..this video is truly one of the best videos in youtube..fukin people now a days watchin jonas and fall out boy stuff..

i gotta admit i cheered for John during the duel..both were good but John jus touches my soul like no other..

  • Unfortunately, I'm still green to funk music. However this video has introduced me to The Meters:), and they're awesomeness. Can anyone recommed songs by them as funky as their jams?

  • cissy strut and look a pi-pi are good places to start!

  • WOW! How cool is this?!!!!!!!

  • Wow that is so amazing. I would have loved to be there. Two of my favourite bands.

  • Wow, the guy from the Meters is amazing...

  • i love the guitar battle :D

  • great combination of two bands! nice jam!

are they covering a song in 3:15 (when they start singing)?

  • Handclapping song - the meters ;)

  • I was there and this was one of the most memorable live music performances of my lifetime, especially the RHCP's kind words about New Orleans post Katrina and their solo of Guthrie's "City of New Orleans". Thanks for keeping this memory alive!

  • They should give more time to the amazing bassists to solo!

  • Don't you mean Flea?

  • wow animal i love both these bands! timeless

  • Music is God!

  • Is that Zigaboo Modeliste on drums? He looks older than the kid they used for years.

  • its chad smith

  • this is fucking awesome! i wish i was there to witness this

  • fucking brilliant video.

  • Some people have no music knowledge & are bigots. RHCP obviously are not. They have healthy respect pioneers before them.

THE METERS RULE and the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS (that name probably comes from that burning New Orleans flavor The Meters laid down)rock on!

  • gotta love thee improved jams

  • wow great quality, man! thank you for this!!

  • wow, i had no idea they did this!

  • I love 5:24 - 5:45

  • this is truly awesome, it looks like theyre having so much fun!!

  • RHCP and The Meters FTW and everyother funk band!!

  • Why on earth would RHCP fans put down The Meters or question their ability?

It's hilarious - these guys are heroes to the peppers. I laugh when I look at the crap RHCP fans write on the video for the original Higher Ground. The Peppers obviously have immense respect for the musicians who inspired them and formed a base for their style of funk-rock ------ so why don't many of their fans?

  • the song is "Hand Clapping Song"

  • i would happily give my left testicle and take it as a bargain just to be able to play in the middle of these guys even if my instrument is just a tambourine.

  • incredible

  • Damn that shit is hot!

  • thats Perfect a Perfect MIX

  • Wow two of my fav!!

  • That's the Meters song "Clap Your Hands"

  • these guys are all great

i prefer RHCP though but together they're awesome

  • dont compare them. there both mint and this jam is like propa class

  • they sound so good together

  • I don't think so...most solos in this song are played by the meters' giutarist...by the way i think that it's hard to understand who is using all the space because i think that they have been able to create an all in one sound...i think you understand me....i'm italian ;-) !!!

  • THIS IS AWESOME

  • Poor Anthony.

  • I was here for this, and will never forget the feeling. It was like the meters, peppers, and crowd were all one. Amazing. Best show i've ever been seen by far

  • ever seen by far*

  • this is more rhcp than meters in terms of sound......chad is not keeping it fucky enough and john is soloing blues

meters drummer is better in my opinion but they have differnt styles.....RHCP were always a harder style....not they one is better but they are not merging enough here methinks..........at least for the first 3 min

  • I'm not too keen on the guitarist of The Meters in this particular performance. The sound is more reminiscent of Joe Satriani and all those other solo guitarists out there, which is not all too bad, but I feel that it takes away the funk from the performance with his constant shredding, which is rather antiquated in the funk genre. Nothing beats a sound which is both soulful and simply groovy.

  • If you find yourself in a heated battle over who is better you need to rethink your attitude and understanding of music. Just listen dammit.

  • haha if i had one of those insults for every time that meters guy hits the same note in those solos, id be upset

  • you are right. he is playing a scale. and yes it is simple. but its what he does with it that makes it special and ill have you know the pepper's song Hollywood (Africa) is a cover of the meters song Africa. It was through the red hots that i found the meters but i like them both.

  • George Porter Jr is probably the grooviest bassist ever.

  • man if u play guitar and dont respect influences on bands u like then u must be a little kid. the guitarist from the meters is awesome but different to frusciante.

just because u like frusciante that doesnt mean anyone who doesnt play like him is bad.
