Worst review ever. No usable information, the reviewer spends the whole time complaining about how the lens bores him. It's a budget lens, for people who can't afford the higher-end lenses, or people who want to go on vacation with just one all-rounder lens. Not everyone can afford £700 - £1,400 for a lens. Barrel Distortion is apparently a common occurrence and only a problem for the professionals who want the top quality pictures. He failed to show the distortion in the old lens. It's worse.

@radiocaf The older 18-270mm  non-PZD lens is better. I had both and keep the old one. It is larger (72mm vs/ 62mm) heavier but takes punchier and more contrasty pictures. Oh, also the it`s sharper.

@valhorologist I never had dealings with the older one but I do hear it's quite sharper, if I remember correctly, he mentions the sharpness difference in this video. I'm happy with the PZD one, the reason for this being I regularly record video so try and get as little noise from the lens auto-focus as possible, I'm not so good at Manual focus, which is why I use AF.

@radiocaf I think if you start using (if not yet) a dedicated microphone any autofocusing noises wil be deminished if not completely eliminated. Also It seems to me now that for video it`s better to use a lens with a larger aperture for a more effective depth of field like f1.8 35mm for example. Unless you are rying to catch random people at real life acts in the streets.

I actually have one of the old version and I like it a lot. I can see it is not perfect but the versatility compensates well for some barrel distortion at the wide end and some fuzziness at the longest end. I have the habit of not using it above 250 mm. Otherwise, it has nice colour, the images are reasonably sharp and can always be corrected a bit if necessary.

@raidtariq your use your kit lens and your entry level zoom to this lens as a basis for comparison? Sure no lens is perfect, but of course your crappy kit lens and zoom lens is going to have problems like barrel distortion, because its just that, a cheap kit lens. When you spend more money on quality glass, these problems should be eliminated. This lens he reviews here is very cheap in comparison.to other lenses with the same reach and therefor is going to suffer from barrel distortion.

I'm looking at the option of getting this lens for my Sony a580. The idea would be to replace an 18-70mm and a 75-300mm with just one, so I can carry another more dedicated piece of glass, either a fisheye or a prime. Nice to show the distortion at 18mm. This does concern me as I'd be using the wide end alot, another option would be the Sony 16-105mm which is slightly cheaper, and supposedly optically superior too.
